It gives a great view of the town. However, it is a bit steep and requires some climbing, thus a little difficult if holding a baby.

Worth the walk up the hill, once we found the way! Amazing views of Kendal and the countryside on a clear day.

Fantastic views and a good workout!!!
Sep 2021
Kendal Castle is only 10 minutes walk from the town, but well worth the effort. It is a fairly steep climb up along the paths, but it is manageable. There are some benches and places to rest on the way up (if it's dry!!!), but if nothing else you'll be getting plenty of exercise!!!
The castle is in ruins, but the outer wall is pretty much in tact and a path follows the outside of the castle all the way round. The views are stunning and make you realise just how much you've climbed in a relatively short space of time! Even on a cloudy day, as it was when we visited, the views across the area will make you forget any weary feet. There are many notice boards offering information about the castle, and considering this is a free attraction left open for anyone to wander round, the area is very well kept and tidy. It seems to be a popular walk for the local dog owners!
Definitely worth the effort and recommended to anyone.

Well worth the climb!

A lovely walk up to the castle, a bit of a climb but perfectly manageable! Totally worth it once you are up there; the views of the surrounding countryside are stunning and the castle itself, although very ruined, still gives you the impression of how it was when it was complete. Definitely worth a visit.

Quick but adequate visit to a ruin
Sep 2021
At the end of day three of our Lakes staycation we had a spare hour or so, to fit in a quick visit to this 12th Century castle which was abandoned in Tudor times. In the 450-500 years since it’s abandonment it has become a ruin. It is however an interesting place, but what remains of the main building seemed, to me, to be remarkably small. The castle once belonged to the family of Queen Catherine Parr; the last wife of Henry XIII.

When you look at the map access from the centre of Kendal is via a quite short walk, but there is a stiff climb up some steps and then a path-way that zig-zags up the hill to the castle site. The River Kent sits between the town centre and the castle. We were setting off from our hotel which is on the northern edge of the town and north of the river, so we able to gain easy access to the pleasant riverside Gooseholme Park and use its paths into Kirkbie Green (a lovely small wooded park), and then following the good signage we joined the path to the steps and on up to the castle site.

We spent just under 2 hours getting there and being there and walking into the town via Lound Road bridge on thence to a wine bar.

Lovely spur of the moment visit
Aug 2021
We visited Kendal castle by accident after we stopped into Kendal to visit the museum on a day it is not open (make sure to check that detail, its not obvious on the website). We had already paid for parking so we took a wonder around town and saw a sign for the castle. We had our children with us so off we went to look for a castle.
At one point we came out and couldn't find the next sign to direct us, and a local was driving passed and noticed the "where the heck is the castle from here?" look on our faces ... he kindly pointed us in the right direction.

There are great views once you reach the top, plenty of open space for kids to run around. You could even have a picnic up there. Lots of dog walkers walk up too. The signage was helpful to explain the ruins, and we liked the perspex image you could look through to help you image what is was like. The best part is when you leave, you walk down the hill!

For those with kids, there is a park at the bottom of the road as you are leaving (coming) it looks great but it was crazy full, busy!

Remains of castle ruins worth the steep walk
Aug 2021 • Couples
Walked down the river and realised there was a castle. Bit of a steep walk up a hill but really enjoyed the ruins and the view over Kendal. Not many shops to walk round so this was a lovely walk just out of the town to finish our visit off.
