I have been an English rider for a lifetime but after losing my own horse wanted to try something different. Since riding at southern schoolmasters I haven’t looked back. The yard is friendly, horses are well trained and would suit all abilities from complete beginner to those that want to progress on. Kirsty and Tina are experienced tutors and lessons are super fun. It’s not just about riding in a big saddle the aids are so different to English. I have learned more about the horse, the way they move and respond and feel after every lesson I am becoming a better rider. Topped with a trail out. Just pure bliss. Give it a go.

Being a woman of a certain age and a certain weight and not having riden for five years, I was a little apprehensive about my gift of a Western Riding Experience! However I need not have worried! I had the most enjoyable day with Southern Schoolmasters, the staff were so welcoming, that includes the horses and the cats! My morning of tutoring with Kirsty and Uno was really interesting and fun, lunch was lovely, then the afternoon trail, through the beautiful Surrey countryside was just a dream. What a wonderful day, what a lucky person I am for being given such a great experience. All thanks to Southern Schoolmasters!

I love horse riding and learning new skills, so when I found this place on the internet my husband booked me an experience day and what an experience! When I arrived I was greeted with a lovely friendly welcome. I'd booked my day for a Monday and I was the only one, so had complete one-to-one tuition. I was matched to a horse, Brazil, (a Criollo, which is what the Argentinian Gauchos use) and we groomed and tacked up using the western saddle and bridle. The first part of the day is spent learning all the commands and techniques associated with Western Riding, which is completely different to the English style. My teacher for the day was Kirsty who was a very accomplished instructor and she put me at ease straight away - I'm not a fan of being in the school/arena as I start to feel trapped, I much prefer the big open spaces, but with Kirsty's guidance I overcame this. I learnt how to weave in-between the poles, and how to turn the horse 360 degrees in a small square without touching the poles. Everything is explained well and how Western Riding is based on working/riding in balance with your horse. After lunch, which was included in the price, came the best bit, riding out in the local countryside which is beautiful. The horses are all well cared for and the stables and fields are immaculate. I can't recommend this experience enough, every part of the day was fabulous, so if you love horses and want to try, and learn something new, this is for you. I will definitely be going back again.

Welcomed with open arms quite literally - hugs are standard, as is coffee, smiles and sometimes cake! Tina and her team of horses, Dave the cat, Berkeley the hound and of course lovely staff, make for a fab experience to newcomers and regulars alike.

A small but perfectly formed and immaculately maintained yard, Razzlins Farm is home to a unique combination of American quarter horses, argentine creoles and dressage schoolmasters. If you are looking to join an overcrowded class of bored and unresponsive horses to spend an hour flapping your legs about whilst being yelled at, this isn't the place for you. If however you want learn to ride western on an authentically trained horse by instructors sympathetic to both you and your mount - look no further. Note: crys of "yee ha" and blowing kisses to your horse are encouraged!

As a traditional English rider of many years, I first found Tina and Co. when on a quest for an establishment to cater for the likes of myself - not a beginner but, certainly no expert - for private dressage lessons on a horse that knew all the skills, but wouldn't lower itself to execute unless ridden properly. I was introduced to the combo of Chrissy (instructor) and "Rodders" who fulfilled these requirements and then some. Very talented horse but with plenty of “character” to challenge the rider - ignores with disdain my inadequate communications but boy when I get it right, the rewards are amazing. Chrissy is a mine of knowledge, info and encouragement and, a bit of a horse whisperer to boot – my ground skills have improved as much - if not more - than my ridng, thanks to Chrissy.

Western riding is great for your English trad seat – who knew! Not only that but, it’s great fun, quick to learn and a much more natural discipline than trad English. If western was the first equestrian experience for boys there would be many more who stick with it rather than quitting at the first experience of an eye-watering mistimed rising trot!
