Worth it!

So worth the hike! I came back after a day of rain and glad I did. With the rain, though, was a lot of mud and running streams of water.

Parked by the train station and the trail starts just past the railroad tracks. Soon enough, you'll hit a fork with the park info on your right and you'll notice small signs pointing to a few different trails. Mt. Willard's Trail is on the left.

Not sure if it was normal or because of the recent rain, but I had to cross a couple small streams of water by making my way across logs. Be careful, if you lack balance. Not that you'll drown, but you could hurt yourself or wet your socks.

It took me about 1.5 hrs to get up there, but I really took my time and made frequent breaks. Also, there are small jut-outs to take pictures of the river below so I explored that a bit. I believe most people only take about 1 hr to make it to the top.

We visited Mt Willard in hopes of seeing beautiful fall colors and were happy with our decision! It is a rather challenging hike. given that this is basically a canyon that you were looking down into, if you want the best lighting of the fall colors go in the middle of the day, there will be deep shadows if you go early or late in the day. At the beginning of the trail there are two streams to cross, but there are ample rocks to use to do so. The middle section of the trail has A LOT of rocks and is uphill. The end of the trail is fairly damp. We found a challenging to find the trail head for this trail, it is across from Saco Lake and you must cross the railroad tracks behind the train station to get to the trail head. Hope this information helps you have a smoother visit than we had!
