It was an easy drive from Rennes to Chateaugiron on our first full day in France. And the approach to the chateau was simply majestic. There was ample parking in the lot next to the chateau, and it was nice to simply walk around the grounds and admire this magnificent structure that dates back to the mid 1400s. We were not able to go inside but seeing the exterior of the chateau was spectacular enough. The town of Chateaugiron is also one of France's Small Towns of Character, and it was great to stroll through its streets. This was a great introduction to our two weeks in France!

This town is worth an hour or so of your time. You can walk around the castle, which is huge and impressive. We didn't visit the inside, as others have noted this is also the City Hall, my guess is that you can visit the inside at certain times, but I did not research this. The neighborhood immediately around the castle includes a few old and charming areas.

Looks absolutely amazing from the outside and if the sun is in your favour you will get some wonderful photos. Tourist office is right there as well. We were aloud to wander around and that's it!! You can't visit it unless you are local and volunteer for village duties. Never heard of that. Now I understand why there are only 2 reviews. No information on the château at the tourist office!! That's a first. Having the tourist office situated next to the Château you would think they would have an information leaflet for the château. Instead I was given a leaflet for a tourist walk around the village. That's useful I thought....when you come to visit the Château. Nice to take photos though.
