- Der KGulf Shores, Alabama4 contributionsPinel Island two sides both fun....Pinel Island was a fun part of our vacation. We took the ferry over and then walked over the hill following an easy to see path, about 10-15 minutes to the other undeveloped side of the island away from the restaurants and family swimming area. The other side is very open to the elements (Sun and wind) so you have to bring some shade, water, and some snacks. The remote side was a little rough to swim and it was difficult to enter the water due to waves and rocks. Not the best for swimming as it can be rough. We did go nude on this side and there were several couples and a family with teen aged kids as well all enjoying no clothing sunbathing and beach fun. Please if you think your kids or spouse will self combust and be damaged for life if they see people nude dont take the hike over the island to the undeveloped side. If you are good with people in their skin and you want to join in it was a good time and worth the trip over... The side you arrive at on the ferry has two restaurants, both very good, bathrooms, shade, chairs to rent, and a nice calm flat bay to swim in. Great for families with kids, no nudity is allowed here and its a great time for all!Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2023
- CarnanPChristiansburg, Virginia128 contributionsBeautiful island and relaxing time.We went to pinel island for beach and snorkeling. First, the ferry. Trash everywhere. In the water and land, broken parts on piers. Employees rude. They were eating lunch on pier and completely ignoring everyone that came up. Finally walked up and had to interrupt them because they wouldn’t acknowledge me. Poor customer service. Second, the island. Beautiful water and beach. The left side of the beach, facing the water was the “nude” side. 2 restaurants both pretty expensive. Pina coladas were very good. They have lobsters in cages in the surf that you can pick and they cook them for $40/lb. They do take credit cards at restaurants/bars. Bartender was great. Overall a good trip and would go again. We enjoyed our trip to the islandVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 18, 2023
- SCMDJKWhiteAtlanta, Georgia437 contributionsGreat day for the whole family!A beautiful island to explore!! We kayaked over. It was about a 20 minute trip for fit adults. We experienced some strong winds and currents. Nothing crazy!Make a reservation. We saw people turned away! CaribbeanPaddling.com We hiked to the other side of the island. It was a short hike but there are some rocky areas. I was glad to have strap on shoes. Beautiful desolate beach! There is a little more hiking you can do… but our drinks were waiting! 😉 We reserved beach chairs through Karibuni. Great spot! Drink service to the chairs. We made a reservation at Karibuni for lunch. It was delicious!! I picked my lobster out of the trap! And then back to the chairs! There are TONS of hermit crabs on the island. Find a speedy guy and have a race!! (My guy won!) There’s a little shop with nice items. Not tacky souvenirs! We stayed all day! 😎Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 7, 2024
- kristyn dPylesville, Maryland23 contributionsFavorite day on St. MartinAbsolutely gorgeous and worth the trip. We rented kayaks from Caribbean Paddling to get to the island - about 20 min there and 15 min back. We were able to see some sea turtles on the way and stopped at Little Key and a sandbar - both worth the stops! We rented chairs and had lunch and drinks from Yellow Beach - food, drinks, service was amazing. It was crowded, but we expected that. We ventured over to the North side of the island which was pristine and untouched. The water was choppy and rough, but the snorkeling was much better. Our favorite part of our trip, so far!Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 14, 2024
- Deborah WBoston, Massachusetts60 contributionsPinel Island is a gem of a seaside refuge!Pinel Islet is a delightful escape just five minutes' boat ride from the shore near Mont Vernon in St. Martin. There are two beach clubs there - we landed at the Yellow Beach club and had a delightful time with attentive service from the beach boys taking care of us, for both of our visits. There's lovely water and excellent drinks to enjoy, a beautiful view, and very good food as well! If you want to take a little hike to the back end of the island you can find the 'secret beach' that is there with clothing-optional swimming.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2024
- Michele CMilford, Massachusetts64 contributionsOnce is enoughI’m glad we checked out Pinel Island. It reminded me of a cruise ship island but on a smaller scale. The ferry was quick and pretty easy. We did have to stand in the sun for 30 minutes waiting for a return ferry at 3:00 PM. Some sort of sun shelter would make it a lot more user friendly. It was very hot. The 2 restaurants seemed good. We ate at Yellow Beach. The food and service were fine. Make a reservation ahead of time. The water seemed calmer on the Yellow Beach side but neither beach was very tough. It’s a scenic spot with lots to look at. We won’t go again but it was a pleasant day.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 5, 2024

- JotumKnoxville, Tennessee1,508 contributionsNice day visitThis is one of the neat experiences on St Martin. There is a ferry that runs regularly to the island which cost $12 round trip. There are two restaurants on the island with beach chairs and also covered seating. This is popular so it is best to make a reservation in advance for both chairs and dining. Beside the beach area which is where the ferry stops, you can hike up the hill to explore the small island and visit a couple deserted beaches.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 10, 2024
- Karen GYukon, Oklahoma21 contributionsDon’t Miss Pinel Island!Panel island is a must visit place in St Martin. It is a short 5 minute ferry ride, cost of $12 round trip. Ferry runs back and forth so you can come and leave when you want. This is a completely different feel from the other beaches. The water is very calm so great for kids of anyone who’s afraid of the waves. The only downside to that is it stays shallow way out so you can’t really get in deep and float. There are 2 full service restaurants with bars. Both are great and both will rent you 2 chairs with umbrellas for $25. Hike to the other side which is a natural preserve although a bit rocky. Have s wonderful day!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 24, 2024

After 5 weeks on St Martin island, I can understand the desire to get away and do something else. Pinel Island is not “it”. A short ferry ride from Col de Sac neighborhood of SxM island, it is something I wish I had skipped. Small beach gets crowded with both locals and tourists. Locals know to reserve chairs ahead of time, so if you really with to see this small island, consider doing so.
That said, our experience was mediocre at best. We went on a Sunday, and it did not turn into a funday! Crowded with little children and older children (late teens, early 20s), it felt like a kindergarten filled with screams, crying tantrums, and obnoxious sounds (from the teenagers).
Water was murky and not clear.
Service was okay (we were at the Yellow Bar), but prices were ridiculously up-charged. On average, a bottle of wine on Pinel was 25% higher than on SXM. Um, why?
Even though we’ve had plenty of time on SXM, I wish I would’ve skipped Pinel all together.

After paying $12 for a very short ride per person then $25 for two chairs and expensive food it's not really worth it. The service was great with servers coming to your chairs, they were working very hard and were very friendly. We ordered pina coladas and they were very strong, not really to our liking. We had a fine time it just turned out to be way more expensive when there are plenty other beaches to go to for free.

Our family went on Sunday. Thought it might be less busy but we were wrong. This is a super busy spot on the weekend. Get there early as by noon time most chairs are gone ( some can be reserved before you get there). We arrived by 10 am and we found parking easily and got on the second shuttle over. It is a great beach and since it is protected almost no waves. The service at the yellow beach bar was superb, the food was great. It was a great day overall. Plan on spending money for water shuttle $12 return per person, $50 for a pair of chairs, then food and drink. For us it was a super relaxing day which we spoiled the whole family. I would suggest going through the week if you want it less busy. Definite must do while in St Martin.
P.S There was an ice cream boat. Who doesn’t want ice cream!!

We went to Pinel Island mainly because of the snorkeling recommendation. The water is calm on the leeward side of the island but unfortunately the bay is very silted. The coral is all dead and grass has taken over. The snorkeling was terrible. By the time we paid $15 each for the boat ride to the island and $25 to rent the chairs, most of the other beaches were a better deal. One benefit was the restaurant at Yellow Beach where the food was reasonably priced and very good quality.

Wasn’t overly impressed. The ferry getting there is not great and then once there had lots of loud drunk people at the yellow restaurant beach bar. Had a friendly server but we had been hoping to remove ourselves from some of the loud people by going to this “remote” location. Not really kid friendly.

Beautiful island just off the coast from Cul de Sac. Ferry is €10 or $12 for a return or rent a canoe and DIY. Some reviews mention that island is being discovered as 'a place to party during the day'.
On both of our visits on Sundays we did encounter large groups of certain North Americans who where loud, brought their sound systems and even smoked weed. On our second day there was a scuffle between two French people, because of something their children did to each other. It did not really escalate and they shook hands when everything was cooled down again, but I do think it's quite sad that people are not able to behave civilised. Not sure if tour companies are offering tours that state this is a party island, because it is not. Most visitors, especially on Sunday, are families with children who just want to have a good time and relax in the calm seas.
It is possible to hike around the island if you walk to the sign left of Yellow Beach. You can get some interesting view and do a small climb to the highest point from where you have a nice view on Sint Maarten (behind you) of Tintamarre (in front of you). The beach on the other side is much more quite and tends to attract nudists, who arrive by their own small boats.
Last boat on the island leaves at 5 pm. When my wife lived on Sint Maarten ten years ago, she fell asleep on the beach and eventually needed to swim to the other side at the narrow inlet between Sint Maarten and Pinel, although she does not recommenced it!

My husband and I enjoyed a beautiful Saturday at Pinel. We took the first shuttle boat at 9:30, and paid $24 for the both of us round trip. We paid once as they gave us a ticket for the return boat back. We went to Karibuni, had Esteban as our waiter, very friendly although he did disappear for awhile during the day (longer then a lunch hour break).
We sat right in the front of the water, very calm and relaxing, first ordered a beautiful fruit plate at 10a since the kitchen opens at 12p. We opted to eat right on the beach and not at the restaurant. The day was perfect with beautiful weather, sunny and some clouds, bring sunscreen! There is also a cute little shop with handmade items along with some clothing choices. I did see snorkeling gear for sale but please bring your own. T
We also did see the Ice Cream Boat, prices ranged from $4-8. Nothing crazy just simple ice cream choices. For lunch I decided to have lobster so I was brought over to pick a lobster and picked a medium one about 900g Esteban said. But when I was served, he brought 2 saying the medium one was not good inside so they gave us 2 for the price of 1. Very nice of them in my opinion.
We continued to have a nice day and took the last boat at 5p off Pinel. Our check was right at $200, from all the food (fruit plate, mini pork rolls, some squid appetizer, lobster, and all our drinks.) The wait staff prefer cash tips so bring cash if you can!
This is definitely something to do while in St. Maarten but I would suggest saving Pinel island for your last day of your trip before heading back home on your flights.

Been to Pinel too many times to count and I’m surprised that I haven’t given a review. I laugh a the people who say it’s “not that great” or “ok” or “overrated” because they are simply stupid. Yes it’s a $12 boat ride and a chair will cost you $10. So what. They charge for chairs everywhere you go. What makes Pinel great is (1) you’re blocked by the wind so it’s not as windy, sandblasting as Orient Beach and (2) the water is much calmer and a lovely turquoise blue. YES. I have been there days when it’s very windy and the surf is rough (but still calm compared to Orient). You can’t predict or control the weather. You can hike the island and see a bunch of wildlife. There are 2 restaurants: Karibuni which has amazing food (and staff); and Yellow Beach where the staff is probably good but the food is less than to be desired. Do yourself a favor and spend at least 1 day at Pinel (at Karibuni). You will enjoy the experience!

We had heard lots of good things about Pinel Island so we decided to take a look for ourselves. We rode the ferry over and got settled on Yellow beach with a couple of chairs and an umbrella ($25). We were able to get front row chairs and the servers on the beach were very attentive.
We did hike to the peak (66' tall) and were able to get a good view of the entire island and some neighboring islands. We also took a couple of bananas with us to feed the Iguanas. The Iguanas all came out of hiding when they saw the bananas. They not only eat the banana, they also love the banana skins. There are several vegetables and fruits that are toxic to Iguanas, so be sure to research that before taking some to the island for them to eat. It seems that bananas are one of their favorites.
We had lunch at the Yellow Beach bar and restaurant. My wife and I split the daily special pizza with Escargot (yes, Snails) and it was delicious. Thin crust and just the right size for 2 people to share. We also enjoyed a bottle of Rose with our pizza.
If you plan to visit Pinel Island, you should plan on spending nearly $100 for the day. That includes $12/pp for the roundtrip ferry ride, $25 for 2 chairs and an umbrella, and then drinks and lunch. Not a cheap day trip, but good for a change of pace.

Saint Martin in our opinion doesn't have the most beautiful Caribbean Beaches compering to the neighbor Anguilla o St Barth but for sure Pinel Island is the best beach of the Island. To reach the island is just 10 mins by ferry and the price is 10$ return. On the beach there are 2 restaurant ( a little bit pricy ) and a few sunbeds but you can just lay on the beach with your own towel.
We spent a few days here and unfortunately the last ferry is at 5pm which is a little bit too early since is the heavy traffic time on the island once you get off the ferry.

how long and challenging is the kayak ride if we opt for that mode to Pinel? THX
Written December 20, 2023
Sorry for the delay... While we were there on the north side a young family two kayaks, Two adults, two teens, pulled up to the beach. It was a struggle for them and I was worried they would be capsized as the surf was somewhat high. They managed it and did not capsize so all was well. Not sure I would have done that though.... If you kayak to the south side clothed and walk over to the nude side it is very easy and very calm usually....

How difficult is it to get a taxi to return back to the cruise port? We were going to do this as an excursion then figured it would be cheaper to go out on our own.
Written June 2, 2019
Very hard to get a taxi back unless you pre-strange it with the driver. Renting a car was reasonably priced and a simple drive. It’s a very small island.

We will be in SXM next week and would like to do this island as a day trip. Questions: can we do snorkeling from the shore here? The restaurant on the island, is it good for lunch? Are there enough beach chairs and umbrellas? Where do we keep the valuables such as a wallet and cameras while we are in the water?
Written December 10, 2018
Not sure on the snorkeling, but plenty of beach chairs and you can basically sit in the sand and surf. Food is good, nice place for lunch. We had a view of our items at all times as well, it was very safe there. Only way to the island was with a water taxi or if you kayaked yourself there. Not alot of people there at one time. Super nice place to spend an afternoon!

No booking required. Get a taxi as you depart the ship, have them take you to Cul de Sac to catch the ferry to Pinel Island, pay the ferry fee (I believe it's 10 euro round-trip) and ensure you have a return taxi lined up to take you back to the ship. The ferry to and from Pinel leaves every 30 minutes or so.
