Set inside a school grounds and adjacent the Bataan WW2 Museum this is a must see site in the City Of Balanga Bataan.
If you're not fully informed of the historic significance of this site take a look at the surrender site statue then go into the museum for an understanding of its importance and the subsequent horrors of the Bataan Death March. Take a moment or two to reflect.
The surrender site is free, the museum is P50.

The actual surrender site of the American forces stationed in Bataan was in the barrio of Talisay in the municipality of Balanga (now a city). We were told that at the back portion of what is now a sprawling public elementary school was where then American Gen. Edward King officially surrendered to the Japanese forces. On that exact site under a decades-old tree now stands a life-sized monument depicting the signing of the surrender papers. And, just a few steps away is the newly opened BATAAN WORLD WAR II MUSEUM where we saw a concise narrative of the significant events of the battles in Bataan. A few dioramas and war memorabilia are also on display, Admission is free but the fledgling museum seeks donations. The place is a mere five-minute ride from the city's plaza.

I sure messed up!!!

First of all, NEVER take a motorcycle taxi to the mountain. I was told that if I go to the bus station I could buy a ticket to Mt.Samat. I got in a moto taxi and the guy told me he could take me there and back for 5 U.S dollars. I thought- What the heck...
So we drove, and passed so many of the markers showing the terrible march. It was actually a nice ride to the mountain. The driver let me get out and take some photos, and the SUN WAS HOT! So we get to the mountain, and he starts trying to go up it, and all the sudden it is too steep for his motorcycle to go up. So basically I had to WALK TO THE TOP. Lucky I brought some water. It was a long...LONG walk...under the hot sun, and it was really ironic because I was going to the museum on top which had many artifacts from the actual events around the death march.

Well, after about an hour and a half I made it to the gates of the memorial. It was just amazing! The museum was empty, and once I paid for the ticket, less than five U.S dollars, I went inside and found a treasure trove of information! There were actual weapons used in the fight, along with telegrams from the U.S and their contacts in Australia. The whole story of the surrender and the march comes together in this little museum. The guard will turn on the aircon, but there were a million mosquito's inside.

You will probably want to spend a few hours here. I was really interested in every detail and stayed until it closed. It really is a mystery all the different things that went on....

If you can read the book TEARS IN DARKNESS. This will give you a good idea of the details from a survivor's standpoint. Oh...I also went to the surrender sight which is behind a small elementary school in Balanga. I went on Sunday.... Everyone knows where it is and you can walk there easily from the city center.... There is a guard out front and he will let you go to the acutual spot where this historic event took place. The musuem on Samat Mountain will fill in all the details because of the special original telegrams sent from the U.S army. I don't want to give away any details, but those telegrams on the wall will open your eyes to what really happened!

A great sculpture set within the grounds of a school.

I visited here with a friend, when we arrived here we couldn't find where it was, not realising that it was inside a school, you go into the grounds then walk around the various buildings until you find it in a tree lined courtyard. Opposite the sculpture is a WW2 museum, unfortunately we came here too late in the day to visit the museum so it was shut, so i would recommend coming in the morning or midday.

The sculpture is a depiction of 6 men discussing the terms of surrender around a table, who the men are isn't the clearest when looking at the statues themselves, however there are quite a few boards that tell you a lot about the history and details of what is happening.

This is definitely worth a visit if you're around Balanga City or you are really interested in the history of the Philippines especially WW2.

The actual memorial location doesn't provide much on-site information about the actual surrender event. Unless you're a WW2 history buff, a visit should be paired with the nearby museum to understand the full context of the marker's significance. The monument itself is a fairly unremarkable set of sculptures but if you're aware of what it represents (the fall of Allied forces in Luzon and the set-up for the eventual Death March across Bataan province), the whole scene bears the weight of history.

Nicely recreated memorial. It is next to the Bataan War Museum with parking available in the surrounding schoolyard parking lot. At the time of our visit the museum was not open.

The fact that you can step on the actual site where surrender terms for Bataan were negotiated is a pretty surreal experience. The monument itself is a few larger than life statues of the key participants. I drove her myself and had a bit of trouble finding it but after asking around one nice gentlemen showed me the way. It’s literally located on a school’s grounds. Adjacent is a museum that provides some background on Bataan, the battle, and the death march. One of the retired women working there father served in the conflict and she told me a few personal stories she had heard of people involved in the march and conflict stop by!
