It is easy to walk or drive from the top to the bottom but not easy to catch sight of the concrete 'runways from the sides. It was too late to go in the structure but we were fortunate to see a barge going up....More

This is definitely an eye-catcher in a poor, dilapidated, post-industrial but fascinating region of Belgium (The Borinage). The construction is very impressive and 'Thunderbird-like' and will charm every sixties architecture enthusiast. It's true that it's not very well maintained like a lot of infrastructure in...More

Together with the funicular lift a few miles away (refer to my related review), this is really worth visiting this infrastructure heading to the higher canal. Spotting barges lifted is a pleasure for both kids and parents! From Strepy-Thieu funicular lift it hardly takes a...More

An impressive piece of engineering. But old and not well maintained, as many things in Wallonia. Dirty parking.

We just happened to show up at the bottom of the lock when a pleasure craft was ready for the ride up the incredible incline to the higher canal. One amazing piece of canal infrastructure. When we made a little round trip walk along the...More

As UK canal enthusiasts we found this lift to be amazing. We saw boats going into the caisson and going down while we were there too. We did not realise that the entrance fee included a very informative and stimulating tour inside around life size...More

A very interesting piece of engineering architecture, The visitors centre is well run by helpful and knowledgeable staff. All in all a nice visit, but the tour "A boat a life" is very informative and entertaining, but perhaps at an hour, a little long.

Visiting the plane was one of the typical school-excursions in previous century. Went back with my kids a few decades later, still impressive. Best day is to visit during weekdays (more boats passing through), off-season (less tourists) with good weather (to have nice panoramic view)....More

This is an interesting piece of industrial excess. It is a barge elevator in the middle of a canal system. It was fascinating forst time i went 30 years ago but now it is beginning to age a bit. Best thing now is that at...More
