Ok, for me this is a GREAT example of a tourist trap.
2usd p/p will get you past the gate.
Once in you drive quite a bit and get to a market (of course the locals will be hawking their wares in a nature conservation area).
You walk down a steep staircase and will be met by loud local karaoke noise being blared down the mountainside.
As you reach the bottom of the stairs, BEHOLD!! Another market selling useless items.
You stand still for a while trying to make sense of this mess in a place you would have expected to be quiet and tranquil.
You shake your head in disbelief, and as you look around you notice make-shift replicas of the indigenous ethnic minority child houses to the left. Clearly only for picture moments. Infront of that you will find two huge artificial cameras placed under a tree so you can PAY someone to take your pictures there.
To the middle of the area you will see a wooden deck that extends into the water of the lake.
Here you can swim..if you dare..but may not go further than 10m from the side.
The water is eerie and lots of fallen trees and rocks are visible under the water.
You can apparently walk around the lake if you go to the right...if you dare.
This is what you pay for.
Go at your own discretion.
Be weary of poisonous snakes.

The beautiful Lake Yeak Laom is located about 5 km.of central Banlung. There is a walkway that takes visitors around the Lake which is oval in shape. This area is a part of Virachey National Park which offers exciting treks and many water falls. Here people like to begin their day with a cup of the famous Ratanakiri coffee. I was in the company of my friend's and since it was a weekend we decided for this Lake. After half an hour drive from Banlung we reached this Lake making our way through rubber plantation and up and down mountainous path. As we reached the Lake we were greeted with fresh cool breeze which enlighted our spirits. We took a stroll and decided for lunch as we were feeling hungry. The Lake was like a gem in a huge ring. The waters were still and created an atmosphere of euphoria. Lunch came after a long time and we had the best barbecue fish and rice in this serene place. We took a nap as there were huts available in the vicinity. After few hours we headed back home bringing with us a lot of memories like an extra baggage. Combodia is blessed with a lot of scenic spots ready to be discovered. I am also touched by the cleanliness and arrangements by the Lake organisers so hats off to them. Thanks and Regards to all of those who made my trip worthy to be remembered. Thanks again...

The locals seem to come to dress up, pose and take photos. Good people watching spot. Swim in the lake or walk around it. Haggle for local honey if that’s your thing.
Worth the visit out. We had a moto but I guess it’s a easy tuk-tuk or motodop ride

I enjoyed walking around this beautiful lake and taking some great photos. Mainly lots of locals and no tourists around still. Plenty of vendors selling stuff but not pushy at all which was nice. A must visit place in Banlung. 2 dollar entrance.

The little dusty town of Ban Lung happened to be one of those little gems that we were fortunate enough to discover during our travels in Cambodia.
The Boeng Yeak Lom is an almost perfectly circular lake, located about 5km from Ban Lung. The emerald-hued lake is about 0.72 km in diameter and is ringed by dense forest that is full of exotic birds and parrots. Some believe the lake occupies a 4,000 year-old volcanic crater, while others think the crater is over 700,000 years old and was formed by a falling meteorite.
As you might guess, the lake is tremendously deep (48m) and this is a positive thing as it helps to keep the water clean and clear. The lake is a sacred place to the indigenous minorities and they believe that mysterious creatures inhabit the waters, but don’t let that deter you from swimming. We came out alive after a good long swim in the lake after all.
There are several wooden jetties around the edge of the lake that act as popular swimming areas, so you can stop off for a swim or two during the walk. It’s even possible to hire lifejackets here for extra buoyancy if you’re not a confident swimmer in such deep water. You'll have to pay a small fee for one though.
There’s also a small ethnic and cultural centre on the northwestern side of the lake, with a small exhibit on ethnic minorities. There are some displays inside here on tribal folklore and superstitions and a few tribal handicrafts but the place probably won’t hold your attention for long. Do check out our in-depth guide to Banlung on our website - link is given in the profile. In this article, we have mentioned 4 exciting things to do in and around Ban Lung, so that you can get more out of your Cambodia trip than the average tourist.

A small lake kind of hidden in the middle of nowhere. It is easy to get to and there are plenty of signs for directions. The entrance is 2.50 and there are multiple food and drink stands at the entrance to pick up snacks from. There’s a nice little dock you can sit on or you can take the more adventurous route and walk the trail that takes you around the lake. I highly recommend walking the trail, it can be a little muddy but you will be rewarded with beautiful lake views and the beautiful sounds of nature the entire way.

Yeak Laom lake is attracked foreign vistors in Ratanakiri province. This place cover with the green color around its. There are many stuffs to do here. We can swim through the cool water , enjoy picnic , good view for our eyes and feel relaxed. Especially, we can see multiculture and the nearly die out indigenous. The best time to visit here is around 7-9AM the water is cool , around 2-5PM the view is nice with the sunset.
Yeaklaom is the best place to do in Banlung, Ratankiri.
