One of the nearest historical Catholic churches outside of Dumaguete City that is located along the national road before you take a Ro-Ro ride from Negros Oriental to Cebu Island or travelling to the northern towns of Negros Oriental or to Negros Occidental. A lovely place to worship and pray for a peaceful and a safe road trip or sea crossing to Cebu.

many older churches in the phis, this is one of the more photogenic and impressive. Just outside is the only place in the area where you can buy black candles to reverse a curse on you. (But you have to light it in a cememtary on Tuesday or Friday--best left to a professional)

My wife who had come here in 1987 wanted to come back again. She had come in 1987 with a friend who had told her that many prayers had been answered here. In 1987 only the shrine existed--there was no church there next to it.
Unfortunately when I came here with my wife there was a funeral in the church, so I couldn't look at it, but I did see the 2-story shrine of St. Anthony of Padua there.
Outstanding in the shrine are the large and prominent paintings on the first floor walls picturing some remarkable events in the life of Saint Anthony, paintings which I decided to describe so that visitors can better appreciate this shrine.
One of these paintings shows Saint Anthony preaching to the fish. When he came to Rimini, a city in Italy, the people wouldn't listen to him, so, by divine inspiration, he went to the shore where the river and the sea met, and preached to the fish. The fish gathered in great numbers in the sea before him, not stirring, their heads out of the water (The people of the city ran out to see this miracle, and after this very willingly heard him preach.)
Another painting on the shrine's first-floor walls shows the best known happening in the saint's life, of the saint with the child Jesus. One day, his host then saw a light coming from under the saint's door at night. Then he spied on Saint Anthony, and saw Saint Anthony with the child Jesus, radiating light. This painting shows Jesus before the saint, Jesus' arms outstretched to Saint Anthony. (Now, because of this event, very often Saint Anthony is portrayed holding the infant Jesus.)
Anther large painting in this shrine shows a donkey kneeling before the eucharist, the eucharist held up by Saint Anthony in a monstrance. In the city of Bourges, France, the greatest foe of Catholicism most of all couldn't believe Christ is actually present in the eucharist. He challenged Saint Anthony--he would not feed his donkey for three days, and if they then placed food in front of his donkey, he would become a Catholic if the donkey ignored the food and prostrated himself before the eucharist--which is exactly what happened, as this painting recalls.
A fourth large painting on this chapel's walls shows Saint Anthony unspectacularly preaching at a funeral. This painting, it seems, honors Saint Anthony as a preacher. His preaching was very extraordinary. When he came to a city, thousands and tens of thousands of people came to hear him. The churches were not big enough for all the people, so Saint Anthony preached in open areas. Often 30,000 people came to listen.
(These stories are provided in a short book, "Saint Anthony, the Wonder-Worker of Padua." The story of Saint Anthony preaching to the fish is also told in "The Little Flowers of St. Francis.")

I took a trip to Sibulan to buy ferry ticket to Oslob and passed by the church. The church maybe small but the church grounds is quite big with several structures inside the church compound. There is a separate area for lighting candles as well as offering prayers. It is very near the public market, the public park, gymnasium and municipal building.

Nothing to see, like in most provincial churches. Having said this, I come from a town with churches 700 years old with awesome architecture and art, for me this church is one point, but one extra point because some may find any special value in this church.

This is the place to go every 13th month if you live close by and you believe in saints. The place usually gets crowded during this time of the month. This is also one of the churches that will baptize kids of unwed couples.

Before or after your trip from Sibulan Seaport, you can walk and pay respect inside this historic church. Most patrons go here every 13th day of the month to honor San Antonio de Padua.
