Let your imagination run wild. This town has seen glory and immense sadness. Think of the mariners who struggle at sea to make a living. Think of the mothers and fathers, wives and girlfriends, brothers and sisters, and many others who wonder if their loved ones will come home. It all looks so pretty but reality may be so different. Every house can tell a story. Fish is no longer something that you buy without thinking.

As you walk around the harbour you can't miss this plaque and I don't think anyone does judging by the crowds around it.

A lovely view of life that don't live only off tourism

Barfleur is a nice little working fishing village that is not so touristy. The habour and town are lovely and it is nice to just sit and watch the habour from one of the cafes. It is not too expensive and we bought mussels from here to cook at our studio we rented nearby and you could not beat the freshness, I think I had to only toss a couple of them from the 2 kilo when I was cleaning them, when I bought them elsewhere there were a lot more than were no longer alive. Don't come here if you are looking for you usual touristy stuff, you won't find that here, but if you want to have a nice view, see how those outside the tourist industry in the region live and want some fresh seafood, it is excellent.

Why did we come here?

We visited Barfleur because it was dsicribed as picturesque in our tour guide but were disappointed by what we found.. No reason to make this stop when you are in the neighborhood.

This is a working fishing town

As I said, this is a working fishing town with an overlay of restaurants to feed the tourists. It IS NOT over developed. Barfleur is mostly a grey stone city with little charm. I did say it was a working fishing community. The community to the south, St. Vaast-la-Hougue has the harbor crowded with plastic tourist boats. Barfleur offers good food. And a small sign dedicated to the White Ship which sank nearly 900 years ago with 200 young nobles aboard.
