The Big Nickel impressed our American grandsons with its size. They also enjoyed many of the activities in Dynamic Earth, especially magnetism and the black hole and explanations by staff. The highlight though was the Underground Mine Tour and I must commend the tour guide for her patience as my oldest grandson kept interrupting her with questions and comments.

I have lived here for 8 years and I still LOVE dynamic earth. There is always something going on that's exciting there. What I love the most is that they always update it so it doesn't get old and run down.
Check out the haunted mine during haloween- it was the best!

Always meant to go and see The Big Nickel. Found a little time to make a quick trip here. The museum part "Dynamic Earth" was closed, which was fine with me, I was really here for the main attraction. It also meant that parking was free.
The Big Nickel is great, I could see if from a distance as the sun really shines off it. It was getting ready to rain once I got there so I had it all to myself. Great views of the town and a great photo spot. A must see if you're in Sudbury.

We went really early as we were onky passing through, so only saw the Big Nickel, it was very impressive. It was freezing cold so took a couple of photos then dashed back to the car!

We visited on Friday of March Break with kids 7 and 10 year olds. Lots of hands-on and interactive activities for the kids and for us adults too. The blue coat staff were friendly and great with the kids and kept the kids engaged. The mining play structure was the kids’ favourite and they burned off energy moving coal around. The underground tour was the highlight of our day. Take a selfie with the iconic Big Nickel! Dynamic Earth is definitely a must for things to do in Sudbury.

Good place to take a photo with the big Nickel. Good shows at the Dynamic Earth and information areas where your learn about stones and mining. Book the underground mine tour well in advance, Covid protocols limit the number of people that can go.

We visited on a Tuesday in July with my 7 and 4 year old. We prebooked our underground tour, and the facility did fill up for the day so I would recommend booking ahead. People were being turned away by about noon.
The activities were so fun and interactive for the kids and for us too. A lovely mining play area inside and an outdoor playground were definite favorites, but the video "tour" of the mining process was really informative too! The underground tour itself had 10 people and we were on the tour for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Really cool experience.
The cafeteria was closed so we had to leave during our visit to pick up subs, but had a lovely picnic on the beautiful hill side!

Our tour guide for the underground tour was fantastic. I'm sorry I forget her name but I think it was Leane? Anyways, we enjoyed the tour immensely. She was very knowledgeable and it was very interesting and informative. This is definitely a must see for any rock hound. The displays of rocks and minerals was like none I have ever seen and the staff are all very friendly and well informed. A wonderful day for sure!

It was great to see it. I have only seen it in pictures. It was very easy to find. I was born in Sudbury many years ago.

This is definitely a site to see!
A must photo-opp for any tourist, especially coin collectors!
Very easy to get to, no fees to get to it, it’s just outside of dynamic earth.
If you’re road-tripping, make sure to add the Loon Dollar Monument in Echo Bay, ON, as well as the Giant Toonie in Campbellford, ON.

Do I have to book online? I would prefer to save my visit for a rainy day but that may not be possible if I have to pre-book.
Cindy C

You should pre book. If you just show up you may be disappointed if they are sold out. The day we were there they were at capacity.
During our guided tour we went down an elevator shaft that makes you feel like you're going way down. However, how far down do you actually travel?

Hi!
The underground tour takes you 22m underground. That is roughly 70ft or 7 stories underground. Thank you for taking the time to leave a question!

Do you need closed toe shoes?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi!
We will not stop you from going on the tour in sandals, but we do recommend sturdy shoes. It is a gravel floor and it can be quite wet at times; proper footwear ensures you get the most comfortable experience!

Is there a minimum age for going underground?
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hi Caitlyn P.,
We do not have a minimum age for going underground so feel free to bring your little one(s)! We also offer strollers in the event that you wish not to use your own. The tours last approx. 1h15min which can be long for little ones. If at any point you'd like to return to surface simply let your guide know and they will make arrangements. We hope to see you soon!

I will be arriving in Sudbury on Saturday March 24th. What is the earliest and the latest can I come in and booked for an Underground Tour? Thanks
Staff S
Sudbury, Canada
Hello Don P. and thank you for reaching out!
Dynamic Earth is open from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. The underground tour typically lasts between 60 to 75 mins and the first tour begins at 10:15 am. The very last tour offered on March 24th will run at 2:45 and there are tour times throughout the day.
I hope this helps answer your question! If you have any others please feel free to give us a call at (705) 522-3701 and we would be happy to help.
We look forward to seeing you,
kindest regards,

Is this suitable for teenagers? I feel like they may be bored. Thanks!

The mine tour was unique- however teenagers (unless interested in such) will likely be bored. There aren't many hands on activities for them compared with science north. Most of the other activities (outside of the tour) are geared for younger children. They do have unique simulation 'games', but often there is a wait. Overall I would bypass.

I was wondering the schedule for the underground mines I have my son and grandchildren visiting from out west and would like to take them
Hi Judy!
Our underground tour schedule is variable as we have tour groups that can book our timeslots. That said, we have about 18 tours a day, or 2-3 per hour. We do have exhibits and shows here to keep you busy until your tour commences :D
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to send me a message at mcguire at sciencenorth . ca
Hope to see you soon!
