Interesting museum; give yourself half a day minimum
Really enjoyed the museum but we didn't give ourselves enough time to get around all the exhibits. You need at least half a day to get around just the museum exhibits . If you want to go to the science exhibits and/or the planetarium you really need to go all day. Particularly enjoyed learning about the first Nations as well as the wildlife and extinct animals of the Manitoba region.
Thank you for your five-star review! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your recent visit to the Museum and hope to see you again soon.

Must See on a Visit to Winnipeg
As visitors from BC, we were interested to compare our provincial museum in Victoria ( recently in the news because of a failed renewal attempt by the government that was massively panned by the populace) with Manitoba’s. My conclusion was that BC could take quite a few pages from Manitoba’s book in considering what a good provincial museum should look like. We spent over 4 hours ( and could easily have stayed longer) in the history museum and found it both comprehensive and enjoyable. The replica ship Nonsuch was a highlight ( the Docent at the ship was full of information), but there were great exhibits throughout the museum. Only one minor complaint and one comment; as mentioned above we were there over 4 hours. The museum has spots to sit and rest along the way, but relatively few where you could sit and be educated/entertained at the same time via say a short video etc. Right at the start of the museum there was an exhibit that allowed you to sit and experience a video that illustrated what you might have seen in the tropical sea when the Manitoba area was ( apparently) bordering on Earth’s equator millions of years ago. As a scuba diver I felt almost like I was on a dive. But, the next place to be entertained while resting didn’t come until some two hours later ( an entertaining audio exhibit about the beginning of trade between the First Nations and first Europeans). I imagine as technology becomes fully integrated into the Museum we might see more of this. My other comment is that the museum offered a “deal” where you got a discount if you bought a combined ticket to the Planetarium, Science Hall and History Halls. It seemed ( at least if you were buying tickets online) that you had to do everything the same day to take advantage of this promotion. We might have liked to have bought the combo ticket had we been able to use it over more than one day. I don’t think you can really do the history museum justice if you try to combine it with the other two in one day.
Thank you for your five-star review! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your recent visit and always appreciate feedback on where we can continue improving visitor experience. We hope to see you again on your next visit through Winnipeg!

Great place to learn some of the history of Manitoba
We were there for two hours and saw half of the museum. The Mennonite Clock Exhibit is a must see! It is very unfortunate that when groups of students from schools in the Winnipeg area arrive and tour, the leaders do not take a certain area and go into detail with the students. It is a wonderful place to learn some of the history of Manitoba. Some of the history is good but some not so. It was unfortunate the gift shop was not open, ( I think it is only open on weekends) but one can go on line to order items - that is what I was told.
Thank you for your five-star review! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed your recent visit to the Museum Galleries and 'Keeping Time'. We always appreciate feedback on where we can continue improving visitor experience. School groups are booked in advance by teachers on a specific subject relating to the school curriculum. These field trips may take the group through different areas of the Museum or may stay in one area for most of the visit. depending on the subject. You're correct, the Gift Shop is only open on weekends at the moment, but you can shop online at www.ManitobaMuseumShop.ca We hope to see you again soon!

I am not sure what I expected of the Manitoba Museum but I came away feeling surprised by how good it is. First off, the exterior and lobby are 60s brutalist-type architecture and thus did not feel particularly welcoming or inviting. I recommend not letting that put anybody off. The exhibits were comprehensive and well-done. In a number of areas the exhibits are dated but those do not take away from the overall experience.

Highlights of the museum were, for me, a very nice intertwining of the geological history of Manitoba with its development especially over the past couple of hundred years. The role of the First Nations are brought in throughout and it was easy to trace their impact. I think some will think that there is not enough attention given to land-rights issues but for me I thought the matter was covered enough such that, with some general understanding, I was fine.

My one complaint was my fellow museum-goer. On the day I visited there were several groups of children there and they would just simply not stop screaming and stomping. It was impossible to get ahead of or behind them, it seemed, which was frustrating since there is a fair amount of reading to be done in the museum and it is hard to keep concentration when others are running absolutely wild around you.

I recommend a visit to the Manitoba Museum while in Winnipeg.

This museum was so fun and educational! We got tickets to see all aspects - the museum, planetarium, & science museum. As a visitor from the States, it was great to learn about the history of Manitoba. Museum goes in a timeline type order. Super immersive - great for kids and adults alike! The model ship & other displays were so fun. We saw The Manitoba Skies show in the planetarium - highly recommend. Would definitely come back on a future visit.

There are many great exhibits at this museum. I enjoyed the Nonsuch replica and also the Hudson Bay Company artifacts. The price is very reasonable for the size of the museum and the artifacts.

The museum was very thorough. I enjoyed how it was laid out, focusing on different biomes and areas of Manitoba and then educating on all aspects of the area from geography, biology, geology, paleontology and history.

My favorite part was the display about Winnipeg in the 20s.

veryone seems to cover just how educational and vast this museum is. So I will cover some practical things. I came with three little children. Just before you enter the museum, there is a security guard and on the right is Alloway Hall. You can hang your heavy coats here and here you can bring food to eat at the tables. This is important to note because no food or drink is allowed inside the museum and you’ll be walking and walking! Speaking of walking, there are red, single strollers available free of charge (if you can find one!)
My family of kids began to complain halfway through the exhibits so we made a beeline for Alloway Hall for snack time. No food is served but there were Vending machines available with soft drinks and snacks. Also, the restroom in the main lobby is for both men and women, diaper changing unit in the large stall next to sink. Hope this will help you in your planning and safe travels!

I been there twice now and I love it every time. Some days of the month it is free to go inside. Check it out !! The Manitoba Museum, previously the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, is a human and natural history museum in Winnipeg, Manitobheritage and science education. Kid will love it there.

I’ve always wanted to visit Winnipeg. Many people asked why? Just a feeling and learning how my fellow Canadians live. Winnipeg has impressive public spaces and the Museum is one of the finest I’ve ever visited.

It’s a strong collection with an integrated story of the history of Manitoba woven throughout. The donation by the Hudson’s Bay Company including a replica sea-faring vessel and the walk-thru 1920’s Winnipeg street experience go above the “typical Canadian city museum”. Be sure to see the Winnipeg movie.

Not knowing what to expect, I arrived two hours before the Museum closed and seeing all the galleries took that time. I didn’t have a chance to see the gift shop as it was closing as I left. It’s definitely worth experiencing if you’re coming to Winnipeg.
