    Worth a visit
Everyone told me I needed to visit the Royal BC Museum. They didn't specify why, just that they had strong memories from it and I should go. So, I went. I paid the adult admission fee. I knew from recent reviewers on here that some permanent exhibits were closed due to construction. Still, I spent about 90 minutes in the museum. I especially enjoyed learning about BC natural history, dinosaurs, and the traveling exhibit about Angkor.

    An excellent museum
An excellent family friendly museum with great features on dinosaurs It is easily accessible and we enjoyed watching the IMAX movies - Wings and Anchor. Entry costs are reasonable and they have 2 cafes and plenty of toilets. Would recommend this museum to families and adults with an interest in dinosaurs and the history of Victoria

    Outstanding Museum
My husband and I had been to this museum about 20 years ago and we were so impressed with it then that we had always wanted to see it again. We were not disappointed this time either. The museum is outstanding with very interesting displays of all aspects of British Columbia.

As a visitor would have liked more local information.
It is without doubt a very impressive building and they make the most of the display areas. However we were just a little disappointed not to learn too much about local history of the area. Great and we impressed by the artefacts from Cambodia and the Dinosaur exhibit. Appreciate that to keep local visitors engaged, and returning, by changing the displays it dilutes the experience for visitors. However I would still recommend a visit, if only to the excellent Museum Shop.

A Fabulous Museum with a Heavy Local Emphasis
This is a well thought-out museum that focuses on BC and Vancouver Island. Dinosaurs, geological history, flora and fauna are all covered. There was an exhibit on dinosaurs in BC. The two special exhibits were fascinating: Angkor and T-Rex. Highly recommended.

Our Favorite Museum in Victoria, B.C.
This BC Museum is a favorite stop whenever we are in Victoria. The two current shows close on Jan. 7, and Jan. 14th, 2024. Both are worth a visit. SUE: the T. Rex Experience and the accompanying dinosaur information is interesting, especially for kids into dinos. We also liked the Angkor, Cambodia exhibit and recommend viewing the IMAX movie first as it puts the artifacts in better perspective. Unfortunately, some of the permanent exhibits are not on display because the Museum is updating the existing space. The gift shop, which is accessible without admission, has beautiful merchandise for sale, including First Nation designed items. There also are several authentic totem poles, both inside and outside, to check out.

A Must Se in Victoria BC Canada
Real fine Museum to visit, near the center of Victoria at its old city and its Parliament Buildings plus Harbor, an half a day of getting to know the original and heritage of the Province of British Columbia. Very busy and popular area for global visitors. A must visit if you are on the island and in the city.

    Wonderful museum
Really enjoyed the exhibits and IMAX movie. Highly recommend visiting. I hadn’t been since the 1990s and wow, have there been some great improvements. This is still the only museum where I’ve seen a woolly mammoth. Be sure to catch an IMAX movie while you’re there,

    Just awesome!
A wonder experience at the Royal BC. To understand the importance of Vancouver Island to the reemergence of life in the Northern Hemisphere after the Ice Age, it really shows the unique gift that lies in this region. The displays are kept up well and dynamic. The photography exhibit on right now is wonderful. The IMAX film “Everest” was excellent and inspiring, though not really for youngsters (mine is almost 8), despite being rated “G”. I would say seeing the Royal BC is of great importance to getting the Victoria, but also the Vancouver Island experience!!

    The Terry Fox Van
The Terry Fox van is in the building. Make a quick trip to the foyer w/o going anywhere else. Have an emotional moment with a piece of true blue Canadian iconography. The restored van that was used to accompany Mr.F. and his team across this country. More artifacts to come I hope.

Unfortunately this museum missed the boat in curating their content. Not much to see or learn in this museum. Only two small floors to view with a couple of interesting spots but overall is lacking in everything one would expect from a museum in the capital city of British Columbia. We spoke to one of the employess who agreed the museum was light on content and suggested that some new exhibits were coming?. When we were there the content of the museum was not worth the $18.00 per adult. They do have an IMAX you can purchase tickets for but we decided to move on with our day.

I came to the museum many years ago as a kid, but this most recent visit reminded me why I never go back. The Imax screen is the best screen on the island and shows a lot of nice documentaries. It might as well be a dedicated movie theater. The rest of the museum is a joke. It's old, small and don't have much going on. The dinosaur and nature section on the second floor is tiny, while most of the third floor is dedicated to bc history dioramas that are half closed because apparently they are ashamed of their own heritage, something to do with first nations. I don't know because the entire display is empty with some boards saying how insensitive their displays were. There is a whole exhibit hall that is just completely empty as well. I've never seen a museum this bad.

I am comparing this museum not to the world renowned ones like natural history or British. This museum is a complete disappointment compared to the Royal Tyrell in Alberta, or the War Museum and Royal Ontario in the east. Considering this is supposed to be BC's flagship museum is just so disappointing. Couple years ago the government even wanted to spend $1 Billion just to upkeep the existing museum as is.

Do not waste your time going to the museum proper. If you are visiting Victoria and spending time in inner harbor, consider a couple Imax documentaries as a family and your trip will be sufficient.

Very disappointing. Most of the exhibits are closed or radically changed from their previous state. It is now a very short visit with only the natural history and half of the old town to relly see.

Went especially to see the Angkor exhibition...beautiful pieces from the fabled temple complex in southeast Asia (Cambodia). Try and also see the accompanying IMAX Angkor presentation for a broader perspective on this world heritage site.
