About
As the largest Chinatown in Canada, there are lots to see in this historic district after entering through its grand Millennium Gate. Here, you can find not only dim sum restaurants, Chinese grocers, traditional apothecaries, and antique shops, but also modern cocktail bars, cool coffee roasters, and fashion boutiques. Learn more about the area's history at the Chinese Cultural Center, the first museum in Canada devoted to Chinese culture and history, and then stroll through one of the first Chinese gardens built outside China, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Explore Chinatown on a sightseeing or hop-on hop-off bus tour of Vancouver, which often includes a stop here. – Tripadvisor

The area
Neighborhood: Chinatown
With the recent exodus of massive new building projects hitting the neighbourhood, Chinatown; which has always been one of the city's most vibrant areas; is even more buzzing and buoyant than ever before. Playing host to some of the city's best pan-Asian cuisine, from fusion food to traditional home-cooking, Chinatown has remained faithful to its roots as a space which clambers with shop signs and welcomes diners to the table. More that that, it has a hip experimental vibe to it, with trendy pop-ups and catchall market shops. The biggest of Canada's Chinatowns, it is also home to an expansive Chinese garden whose manicured grounds inspire and delight, its ponds and pagodas drawing walkers in for an stroll. Take in the red streetlights, the playful awnings, and the upbeat air that suffuse this area.

This one, with the exception of the lovely gate, was a disappointment. I realize the prominence of this area has changed with more commerce outside of the downtown, but given Vancouver's extensive population with Asian backgrounds, I expected more. There were a few good tea stores selling excellent specialty tea. The rest of the are had an air of neglect. The few stores that were open and displaying their goods, were separated by many closed and neglected storefronts. If you are intending to dine in the area, there are few options. A couple of bakeries and some BBQ restaurants comprise most of the dining options. Unfortunately, the area borders some of Vancouver's more challenging areas which spill over into China Town. If you have been to other spots in North America, you can probably give this a miss.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 19, 2024
- Lauren V1 contributionAverage but not amazingI had been to various other chinatowns globally (even one located in Tokyo Japan) but this one was far more run down and several of the businesses looked abandoned or just weren't opened. However, the shops we did see were very nice and we ate at a great Ramen place where everything was cooked fresh. They had wonderful service and were extremely friendly. It was also nice to be away from all the crowds briefly in gastown. The biggest downside was the homeless population. It's definitely not the safest place for families with children. We avoided certain streets and no one bothered us though. If you are curious it's definitely not a bad place to go, but I preferred my experience in other cities.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 24, 2024
- travelerBirmingham, United Kingdom8 contributionsChinatown, VancouverI first visited 20 years ago and had a really good experience there. Lots of shops open and it had the feel of a great community spirit. My visit this August was pitiful. Hundreds of drug users are concentrated in this area blocking the sidewalks. Such a pity for this community and their businesses.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 9, 2024
- Adrian R29 contributionsNot a place to put too high on your listOnly experienced this briefly as part of a bus tour, but it came across somewhat sketchy and not a place that I would rush back to. Many shops appeared "non genuine" i.e. possibly pitched at tourists and a real china town vibe appeared to be missing. The side lanes certainly seemed like they may be best avoided.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 24, 2024
- Von1956Cannock, United Kingdom472 contributionsGreat restaurants BUT social deprivationThere are some fantastic restaurants in this area that are well worth visiting. However be aware that this area has massive homeless and drug abuse problems. We visited the area a couple of times for the food and we were never approached or bothered by the locals but the desperation and obvious social deprivation of people in is area is distressing. We were shocked at the scale of the problem.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 10, 2024

Avoid Vancouver. But you cannot if you are taking a cruise,or visiting the wilderness or islands.Stick to organised tours which pick up at your hotel.
Vancouver has a major problem in Chinatown, and parts of Gastown with a massive tent city of down and outs, open drug taking in board daylight, and a smell of urine. Under no circumstances visit the area with children under 16. Do not book any cheap Air B&B in Chinatown unless you are prepared to wake up to needles on your doorstep.Don't believe the guide books!!!!
Positive:Visit Stanley Park and take a horse a trap ride.

I am a frequent Chinatown shopper, one who’s been going for quite a while now. Chinatown is chalk full of history and traditional Chinese culture you frankly don’t find anywhere else. The stores are fantastic, some of my favourites in the whole city, Ochi, Bamboo Village, The Tea Shop, there’s so many great small locally owned shops that will be a delight to anyone interested in traditional Chinese culture and products. All the store owners are fantastic and I enjoy speaking with them every time I visit. Chinatown does get a bad rap though and it’s a shame. I’ve been through here many times and haven’t experienced any issues, however some areas nearby Chinatown aren’t the safest to be in or walk through, so it’s best to stay around West Pender and the main areas. Aside from that I absolutely love it here, and I would highly recommend visiting whenever possible.

Walked through here on my favourite trek when I visit the big city: get off the train at Main Street, walk by Science World, through Chinatown, then WEST towatds the Stadium or Waterfrront Stations. What is important here is Chinatown's proximity to some of the scarier areas in the downtown eastside, so tourists are encouraged NOT to judge Chinatown itself by its surroundings. Consider the world's shallowest building, the traditional medicine shop, and the amazing Sun Yat-Sen Garden. Put another way: Chanatown good, areas to north not so much.

This area is simply not safe, it is full of Zombie like Drug Users, and I men full.
Literally 100s of them all around the blocks.
However when you see the promotional video on your hotel screens, it tells a completely different story and paints a picture of unique shops and stylish restaurants, it is nothing like this.
The City of Vancouver should be ashamed, and yet they still have the audacity to charge a Destination Marketing Tax.
Others area are great in many way , but stay clear of Drug Town.

Chinatown is faced with a number of problems...a third of the frontages are closed....businesses are faced with exorbitant rents and taxes, the problems of the Downtown Eastside spill over into Chinatown, and I believe the city fathers(and mothers) honestly dont give a damn about the tourist areas of Chinatown and Gastown. Its almost like they want these areas to fail, so that the lowrises can be knocked down and highrises erected in their place. The Chinatown BIA should insist every shop/restaurant owner cleans their frontages daily, and the city should ensure the streets and alleyways are free of litter and detritus. The poor will always be with us, but they shouldnt have to live in filth either. The sidewalks of Chinatown need a good pressure wash, and the lamp standards(which are works of art) should be cleaned, repaired and painted where necessary. With a little TLC, Chinatown could be a great Vancouver tourist attraction again.

Visiting Vancouver and came out to watch the NHL at Rogers Arena so thought we’d walk to neighbouring Chinatown to have some Chinese food prior to the game. Arrived at about 5pm on a Saturday and the area was clearly very sketchy and filled with homeless people, drug addicts and the mentally unwell who are struggling to survive day to day having seemingly been abandoned by the City of Vancouver. We walked a few blocks as we searched for a restaurant and saw people openly taking hard drugs, someone unconscious on the pavement having overdosed, tented communities and lots of people who were clearly in a very, very bad way. It was fairly shocking to see and I didn’t feel safe (and bear in mind we were 2 x 6’ 3” guys visiting in daylight). Heaven only knows what it’s like around here after dark. I feel very sorry for the large numbers of people who have obviously fallen between the gaps in society and are visibly in need of help; I also feel huge sympathy for the Chinese businesses who have seen their streets taken over and their livelihoods adversely impacted. There is a lot of wealth in the city of Vancouver and some of it clearly needs to be directed towards helping those so clearly in need of some assistance & compassion.

In all my 42 years visiting Vancouver I've never seen Chinatown & the downtown core so disgusting that I refused to take my kids out of the car to go walk & shop.
The Zoo & Science World are falling apart and have the most broken and/or empty exhibts I've ever seen during the Summer peak season.
Vancouver andcarea needs to get its act together.

Visited Chinatown many years ago, had fond memories so decided we had to revisit. Total shock- people flat out on pavements, taking drugs, many unconscious. So many tents everywhere, have never felt so uncomfortable and unsafe. About turned and left asap. So sad that such a beautiful and prosperous city can allow this to happen not only to a district and their community but also these displaced people.

All shops shut and didn’t feel safe. We walked in around 4pm nothing was open and was full of drug addicts and homeless people. We walked for around 5 mins and decided to quickly go back and head more central built up area. After actually seeing people consume drugs. Nothing happened to us while we were there and no one bothered us, but just got the feeling of being on edge and very anxious. Shame to see a historic place so lifeless.

We had a hotel for two nights, upon arrival there were people in front of the entrance, on the other side there were pallets for temporary housing. After a sleepless night of the noise on the street, we wanted to have breakfast in the morning.. on the way there, people were begging and groaning. , I don't understand how Vancouver city allows this to happen...
On the way to the "steam clock" attraction, people were packed together, we were shocked and quickly walked back via Chinatown, but this was the wrong decision! there too it was exactly like a zombie city! we met other tourists who also seemed shocked and approached us for help, they did not know the way and we went to the sea together, those people were literally shocked by what they saw just like us
We left Vancouver that day and went to Victoria, what a huge difference and luckily we had a real holiday there!

Does anyone know if they sell Korean mink places in Chinatown? The thick/heavy polyester blankets. If so, where?

Yes but there is hardly anything there and it’s very unsafe. Only has from what I saw there like 2 mini restaurants and 1 souvenir store. We got out of there within 10 mins of arrival. If you visit you will know what I mean.
