Who would expect to find a Buddhist Monastery out in the woods of northern Cape Breton Island? The monastery itself was closed to visitors but we stopped at this monument/mediation place on slope of the dirt road. Phrases for mediation or study are on plaques...More

We were expecting something a bit more than an overgrown area with some buildings in need of repair, trails poorly maintained, 95% of area "off limits" and a general trashy looking environment. Don't waste your time unless you are really into Buddhism. Sorry.

You have to drive on a dirt road to find it but it is worth it for a stroll through the meditation garden and for the stunning views along the way.

Not only the Stupa but the whole place is very worth visiting if you have any curiosity about her work. Or even if you don't, one of the most beautiful places on Earth, with an ocean view equal to any on California's route 1.

The abbey grounds and buildings are dilapidated and, for some reason, felt creepy. I usually really enjoy this kind of site but I could not get away from this one fast enough. Tried the woodland walk. Do not do this unless you are a very...More

The Stupa of Enlightenment is on the grounds of Gampo Abbey, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery and retreat. It's a 15-minute drive from the center of Pleasant Bay, much of it on a gravel road. The monks give tours a couple hours in the afternoon. I...More

Great place to visit, trails are challenging. It was not open but we were invited to do our own tour around. Very rustic area talked briefly to two of the monks who live there. They plant their own gardens .the stupa of enlightenment was very...More
