pura subak with a craving of two dutchmen

Pura Beji located at Sangsit Village, Buleleng,it is a Subak temple.Subak is a term for the Balinese paddy irrigation system.it is dedicated to the spirit that looks after the irrigation and rice fields.i visited this temple three weeks ago when i had my North Bali trip in September this year. it was the second time i visited this temple, the first time was ten years ago.i love its craving, especially a craving of two Dutchmen playing instruments, one playing guitar,another playing rebab.it is said that they were Dutch colonial officer,and helped to renovate this temple.if you love craving of Balinese temple,then it is worth a visit.

Lovely small temple

This is a cute small temple, you can visit it if you stay not too far or include it in a day trip to go after around Bratan area. It is not very known so not crowded at all. It is a short visit, beautiful architecture if you are sensitive to that. Bring your sarong if you can otherwise you have to pay for rental.

Beautiful, peaceful Temple

Such a beautiful Temple, we were the only ones here. No hassle, no monkeys and beautiful carvings. We'd last visited Bali almost 30 years ago, staying in the South, so this time opted for the North and chose days out to avoid crowds. I highly recommend visiting, though maybe not too loudly as it may not stay as quiet!

Most beautiful temple in Bali

Lovely little temple. We had it all to ourselves. It's incredibly beautiful and in a very peaceful surrounding. Surprised this isn't more famous.

Absolutely stunning

A must visit. Probably the best temple in Bali. Easy to find but not many tourist visit. There is a second temple 100 meters behind this one. Also worth visiting.

Temple With Carvings.

This temple is located in Sangsit village, about 8 km in the east of Singaraja. We were driven by our driver cum guide from Lovina via Singaraja to this place. Our itinerary for the day included visits to Pura Beji, Pura Maduwe Karang and Pura Ponjok Batu.
He informed us that this temple was built to praise Sri, the goddess of rice. We found It to be a relatively small temple. There were only about 4 other visitors around. We paid the entrance fee of 10,000 rupiahs and wear our personal sarongs. There are two dragons standing as guards at the gate of the temples. The main attraction of this temple is the carvings that decorate almost all parts of the temple right from the main gate, the second gate and to the main court. Almost no part of the temple was spared from carving.
We spend about an hour here. Bring along a bottle of water, sun block and a hat. Camera is a must. This temple is a must visit if you are in the vicinity of Singaraja or Lovina, and especially so if you have an interest in art and architecture.

Stunning little temple

We visited this little temple at the end of the day and were almost the only ones there. It is gorgeous!

It is small compared to some of the other temples on Bali but has beautiful colors and stone carvings. It is very spiritual and tucked away in a quite street. You can walk around freely and around the building. You are not allowed to climb up and have to wear a sarong which are available at the entrance where you pay a small fee. Worth a visit.

BREATHTAKING INTRICATE CARVINGS, AWAY FROM TOURIST TRAPS

So easy to lose time in this beautiful 15th century temple which was built over a well, in honour of fertility goddess Dewi Sri. On entering through the first gate, (in itself very impressive), the first thing to catch your eye are the intricate carvings all over the pink sandstone, the overall effect is stunning and in the middle sits a heavily carved door in red and gold. Throughout the whole complex, virtually no surface has been spared by carvers, who have created images depicting Hindu epics and legends, the overall effect is stunning. Added at a much later date is the odd statues of two Dutch soldiers/musicians, flanking one of the Hindu carvings, one playing a guitar and the other a rebab.

Pura Beji may not be as large and grand as some of the temples on the island, however it was easily one of the more interesting and memorable temples seen, over the popular ones. No-one else was here, which added to the enjoyment of seeing such a stunning structure in peace and quiet. The grounds are maintained but at the same time there are many weeds, giving it a wild look, which only enhances the whole complex, there are also lovely old frangipani/kamboja trees with large gnarly trunks and beautiful blossoms. This was one of the favourite temples visited in Bali.

Adding to the charm of this temple, is its location, as it’s tucked away from all touristy things, hopefully this enables it to retain that charm. Sarong and sash required, entrance fee Rp10.000.

Intricate Carving Old and New

It would be easy (as well as tragic) to drive past and not know it is there. This temple has many unusual carvings, some quite modern (a guitarist) others old and primitive. It is certainly worth a visit if you are lucky enough to find out that it exists. There is a small admission charge and you should bring a sarong and cover up.
