Outstanding & Fun Mexican Cooking Class
We were able to get a reservation for a Mexican cooking class at The Belmond Sazón School of Cooking in San Miguel. The lesson started with a trip to the local Mercado, a bit of instruction, and finally lots of chopping, cooking, and conversation (the three C’s of cooking) in the kitchen. What a great time we had with our chef Ruben Yáñez. Our final meal included Sopa Tarasca (bean, tortilla, tomato, & chile soup), Ranchero Fried Fish (Tilapia) Tacos, pickled red onions salad , and rustic red guacamole. Yum!

    Highlight of our Trip!!
Chef Ruben was as amazing as the food we created. The tour starts with actually shopping in one of the local markets for the fresh ingredients. This was a very unique and fun part of the class. Then when you return you can be as active or passive in the creation of the meal. Ruben is an excellent chef and an even better host. I highly recommend this tour.

    Great class, great instructor
Sazon is worth the visit!! Ruben is amazing. He completely understood our dietary restrictions, walked us through the market and showed us how to pick the best veggies for what we were making, and spoke with us the entire time. When we got back to the cooking school, we did the work. Ruben showed us, but we did the majority of the prep work with direction and skill from him. It was so much fun. We spoke with him, we laughed, the smells of the cooking food were incredible. Then we ate the finished product and it was delicious! My husband is usually limited to boiling water and microwaving, but he had a great time. Said it was a highlight of our trip to San Miguel. You should definitely do this experience!!

Loved my class with Chef Ruben…every aspect! There are a lot of choices for cooking classes, but I can’t imagine any are as perfecto as what Chef Ruben offers. Highly recommend.

Ruben is friendly and brings great ease to cooking. The food was incredible. And what I loved most was how much Ruben's love for the city and the people showed while we did our tour through the market. I just loved the whole experience!

Ruben took us to the market to purchase ingredients for a delicious meal of pork chops with mole coloradito and his special fresh guacamole recipe. We sampled delicious warm drinks from a vendor while there. Then we headed back to the kitchen for a fun and delicious cooking lesson and lunch. Only one family member is a serious cook but all of us thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Highly recommend!!

Definitely do this cooking class! We debated doing one in Mexico City during this same trip and we’re glad we did one in San Miguel instead. The ones we found in Mexico City were around making a handful of tacos or salsas, but this one felt more authentic because we made dishes that weren’t just what non-Mexicans think of as Mexican food. The price felt pretty comparable to those in Mexico City as well. We made a Mexican tomato soup with beans and chile that we we both absolutely loved and a pork chop in a green salsa that we were both skeptical of while cooking but turned out to be delicious too! Ruben was wonderful and gave us some great tips on cooking at home. His English was superb as well as one of us didn’t speak Spanish. Very fun and memorable experience!
