Birds Island

Deer Island

The three islands of Mazatlán are considered one of the most iconic symbols of the region. They are at once an interesting ecological study and a fantastic recreational space, thanks to their natural attributes and terrain. The islands were named according to the main species that inhabit or once inhabited them: Birds, Deer and Wolves.

The largest and most popular island is Isla de Venados (Deer Island), located right in the middle of the three. It has the most extensive beach and is the best place in Mazatlan to practice snorkeling, thanks to small waves and crystal clear waters. Isla de Venados is ideal for swimming, jet skiing, banana boating, paddle surfing and also for hiking and exploring on land. With an impressive view of the coast of Mazatlan and the surrounding area, you’ll fall in love with the natural beauty and unique perspective that Isla de Venados offers. Don’t miss it!

Mazatlan Lighthouse

What we know today as the Mazatlan Lighthouse, one of the highest natural lighthouses in the world, is settled in what once was an island.

It was in the year of 1828 when the Island of Crestón began to be used for maritime signaling the port of Mazatlán and until 1930 when the necessary work was done to unite this body of land separated from the port by the breakwater as we know it today.

With a length of 641 meters, 321 meters wide and an altitude of 157 meters, the Mazatlan Lighthouse offers the ideal place to enjoy a 360 degree view of the bay landscapes.

The perfect place to take photos of the nearby islands and the city!

Review of: Deer Island
We didn’t really know what to expect on this but it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Although our driver was almost an hour late, we were still very satisfied we didn’t cancel. We were picked up at our resort, met up with the tour guide on the beach with our kayaks waiting for us, kayaked to deer island, hiked up the mountain, snorkeled near the shore, and kayaked back to go back to the resort. We enjoyed that it was an open tour with other people because we got to meet new people. One of the tour guides was also a photographer that took photos for us so we didn’t have to chance taking out our phones and just enjoy the moment. They were all very candid which we loved. The kayak trip was short and our arms hurt the next day but it was worth it! The hike was really short but the view was phenomenal! Would definitely do again!

Review of: Birds Island
My family and I recently decided to spend two weeks with friends in Mazatlan. The trip was top notch all around but when asking my family about their favorite part all agreed it was our time with Cesar on Bird Island. Our tour guide, Cesar was kind, energetic, and knowledgeable. The kayak experience was educational (Although my family has kayaked before the safety brief was exceptional), as was the tour of Birds island. Cesar expertly explained ecology, history, and biology with equal exuberance. I truly appreciated his stance on "take everything you brought and feel free to grab any trash you see." The kayaks, safety equipment, dry bags, paddles, etc. were all in excellent condition with the exception of an anti-fog valve missing in one snorkel mask (although this may have been my bad!). His patience and watchful eye while snorkeling created a calm and secure environment. And as a bonus he took photos the whole time so we can re-visit! When we rerun in the future this is a definite re-do for us. Thank you Cesar!

Review of: Deer Island
Our tour guide Cesar was wonderful and knowledgeable. The kayak experience was lovely, perfect calm conditions and really nice weather. The kayaks, safety equipment, dry bags, paddles, etc were all top notch. This part of the trip lasted about 30 minutes. The hike was not my favorite part. My assessment is that you really need to be a very experienced wilderness hiker to do this trail. Here is why: it was at the end of the rainy season, and the path was extremely overgrown. You could not see where you were putting your feet, and the path was rocky, slippery and dangerous in areas, especially near the top. Granted I am 61 years old, and no longer a mountain goat like I used to be. That said, I made it 8/10ths of the way. When I saw how treacherous the trail became at the top, I decided not to risk my vacation (or an ankle) being stupid. Cesar was great. He (along with my husband) made sure I made it back in one piece. We had worked up a sweat, so was grateful to get in the water and snorkel a bit. I’ve experienced better snorkeling, but this is natural habitat. No one controls it. Cesar had water, juice, apple and some snack food. I was happy with the water. When we asked about restrooms, we were told to go to the palapa restaurant, but they turned me away and said it was for their tours only. Back into the kayaks and a pleasant paddle back to the rendezvous area.

Review of: Deer Island
Everything about this adventure surpassed my expectation. The van and driver were excellent and right on time. Our guide to the island was incredible. Kayaking to the island was so nice. The 3 friends I was with had never used a kayak before and they did great and had no problems under the direction of our guide. The hike has breathtaking views! Have your camera charged and ready to go. I would recommend bringing tennis shoes to wear for the hike. Flip flops or going bare foot is fine everywhere else except the hike. They provide each person with a dry bag so you don’t have to worry about your belongings getting wet. All of the equipment is great quality. The kayak, dry bags, towels, and snorkel gear. The snorkel is all one piece that covers your whole face. Way better than the classic goggles and separate mouth piece version. We had a long time to explore while snorkeling and our guide just stayed within view in case we needed anything. I loved being able to do that and not stay in a tight little group the whole time if we didn’t want to. We had an amazing time! I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes outdoor activities. Unforgettable experience.
