Pick a glass-bottomed kayak tour and go there for an awe-inspiring evening. If your guide is good, like ours was, you will be overwhelmed by the experience.

Visiting the bio bay was a really neat experience, and Mosquito Bay is the best bio bay in the world so you don’t want to miss it. It’s one of those wonders that you don’t want to miss, but also something I wouldn’t probably do twice.

Getting out there, even with a tour, is a hassle, but it's a pretty unique experience. Prepare for it to be pretty crowded with tour groups.

We went on a full moon. Not recommended, much better when is fully dark! Somebody told us it is great on a rainy day, the rain drops light up the water.

You should definitely visit this place. You can brave it on your own, or take one of the many local tours. I recommend a place that offers 'see through' kayaks.

Excellent tour with Blackbeard Sports. Guides were Érica and David. Driver to and from was Joshua. Our nine year old son loved it as well.

Did a tour with Aqua Tours which had clear kayaks. Absolutely amazing. Seeing the bioluminescence going across the bottom of the boat was especially cool. Our guides, Danny, Jose, and Eduardo were magnificent and informative. A small tour of four kayaks so it felt especially personal.

We did a clear-bottom kayak tour with Fun Bros and it was so awesome. Worth every penny. We've done a bio trip in Belize and this was much more vibrant. I also love that they are pretty protective of nature and don't allow power boats. It was a really cool trip -- my 4 and 6 year old kids loved it too.

Absolutely a must do on Vieques! We used Jak Tours and Abel, our guide, was wonderful and the clear bottomed kayaks are also a must as looking under the kayak while paddling is so cool! There are several tours out at the same time but they stay away from each other so it does not feel crowded at all as the bay is large. The luminescence was very bright on our night (cloudy so no moonlight) but our guides said that they could go even on a full moon as the dinoflagellates have really rebounded due to restrictions on swimming and other restrictions in the bay.

Is there an option to take a pontoon boat? We're not experienced kayakers.

There were no pontoon boats. A pontoon wouldn’t allow one to see the bioluminescence very well as you need to disturb the water with one’s paddle to see the underwater glow.

Is the only way to do this tour…to spend the night on the island? We are staying in El Bayamón and don’t want to spend the night on Vieques.

The tour happens at night so unless there's a late-night flight, there's no way to get off the island after the end of the tour. I believe the last ferry boat off the island happens before the end of the tour.

Are you guys operating during the pandemic?

Yes they are. There are many tour groups going to both the one in fajardo snd the one in vieques.

Can you boat to mosquito bay from san juan?

No it’s like a little separate lake that’s protected. They don’t let just anyone in there

I guess my question is, after having walked the Yunque, and experiencing that it was difficult to walk the trail, what physical level do you have to be to participate?

You take kayaks from the beach and travel a total of 3 miles. The kayaking portion goes at a slow pace so no worry there. If you can sit for roughly 2 hrs, can continuously row then you can do this.

Is it worth seeing bioluminescence bay on a night when the moon is almost full?

Yes!!!
Hi, everyone, I saw there are two packages of the bio bay trip. One is 54 dollars, one is 60 dollars. What are the differences?

For the same company? Generally all of the companies are within a $20 range. More money may mean more experienced guides but without knowing the tour company I’m not sure. I’d pick the company with the best reviews. The company I went with was awesome and we stayed out on the bay for a very long time, whereas I saw some companies just barely get into the water (forget the company name but it’s in my reviews). Hope this helps!

Hi...May I ask where did you stay when in Vieques? I understand that the bio tours are late at night and getting a ferry back to the mainland is not possible. Also, are there taxis to transport you from the bio bay back to your hotel? I am planning to go there in December

I stayed on the malecon above duffys bar and restaurant- great rooms with a view. In terms of taxis, they are a bit hit or miss. It really depends on how busy the weekend is. I actually had to hitch hike at one point since the ten taxis I called were not answering. I’d recommend renting a car or just staying right on the malecon. Ps: watch out for horses at night when driving!
