One admission ticket is 10.00 and gets you into both sites. Park close in the underground garage between them.Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten December 27, 2022
- cooms2014Albany, New York92 contributionsHistory is awesome! We love history.... give us all the history! As homeschoolers, we just studied about the time frame when these forts were being built and Spain was in control! Awesome news is that the ticket (only needed for adults) can be used at both El Morro and San Cristobal. Make sure you leave enough time to visit both of the forts as they are different! El Morro took us longer, but San Cristobal had a tunnel! The only thing I wish they had was some reenactors as it is always cool to talk to people who know the real history.Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 11, 2023
- Debbi HSaint Louis, Missouri123 contributionsAllow enough time to really soak it in! ~~ you'll be amazed. It was amazing to see what an effective fortress they could build all those centuries ago. Take the time to read the explanatory signs or listen to any guides who may be talking. You could easily enjoy 90 minutes here. It's quite an education! Good walking shoes and a bottle of water will be helpful. Your ticket also gives you same day access to El Morrow.Visited January 2023Written January 14, 2023
- TravelerMinnesotaDoha, Qatar274 contributionsAmazing building, harsh history, views and grounds well keptFascinating history from Euro Spanish perspective. Amazing structure that has survived a long time. Grounds and views spectacular. Would be interesting to know how and who built it. And who had lived in the area before this structure was constructedVisited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 20, 2023
- parrottdizeDyer, Indiana2,081 contributionsLoved the sitesWe cruised to San Juan and seeing the old fort as we can in at sunrise was so worth getting up early for. As we are coming back to San Juan this year; we decided to just do El Morro this time and do San Cristobal next time. We are glad that we did it this was as it allowed us to spend more time.........no hurrying through. If you like history, old historical sites this is it.Visited December 2022Written January 21, 2023
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia17,646 contributionsTwo forts and in betweenThe whole old town San Juan is under UNESCO, and for a good reason. The old town is spread between two amazing fortresses - San Cristobal and El Morro. The San Felipe del Morro is the second oldest in the Americas (just after the Ozama fortress in Santo Domingo) built by the Spaniards in 16c, yet much bigger, more interesting and better preserved than the Santo Domingo one. It was built on the cape tip to protect the city from the sea. San Cristobal was the biggest fortress in Americas built in 1765. It was designed to protect the town from inland attacks. Both forts are under UNESCO and for both is valid a single ticket of only 10$ (valid 24 hrs.) In between those two magnificent forts is a splendid old town with colonial houses, historic sites and amazing restaurants and bars.Visited December 2022Written January 29, 2023
- Chris LAlbuquerque, New Mexico1,564 contributionsStep Back in TimeI had no idea how vital Puerto Rico was as the 'gateway' to the New World. In order to maintain their control of this area, the Spaniards knew they needed to carefully monitor the comings and goings of other countries' ships and PR was the perfect place to do so. El Morro and San Cristobal are located on the north side of San Juan, which was an island unto itself back in the 1500's. One is located on the eastern end and the other on the western end, you can easily walk between the two. Great visual explanations of the various rooms and what life was like back then.Visited February 2023Written March 9, 2023
- Jamie LBrockville, Canada288 contributionsYou have to goWe have been to San Juan before but never took the time to go to the Fort. This time it was on the list of must-to-dos. The cost was 10$ USD per adult and you have to pay with a CC, no cash! The views were incredible and you get to understand how important this fort was back in the day.Visited March 2023Written March 22, 2023
- Green-eyed-mamaDickson, Tennessee73 contributionsGreat area but tightly packedLots of beautiful streets lined with cute residences and businesses. Fortaleza Street (also known as the ‘umbrella’ street, was topped with butterflies during our visit. There is also a cat sanctuary at the bottom of the hill by the main fort. Extremely limited parking, so get there very early, or park at Escambron Beach, ride the city scooters to get closer. Supposedly no parking allowed at the yellow painted curbs (although lots of people parked there). Lots of restaurants and shops. This is the main cruise port for San Juan (largest in the Caribbean) so check the cruise ship unloading dates/times. The forts are perfect for history buffs and hikers alike. Be prepared for lots of walking and stair climbing.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 25, 2023

US national park site El Morro is a great look into the past history of Puerto Rico. With 6 levels to explore give yourself a couple hours. The views from the top are wonderful and shouldn't be missed.
The fort contains a lot of history and displays explaining how an why the fort was build. There are displays showing the living conditions and the battlements with cannons as well. And of course there is a gift shop.

First of all. Seeing how high this place is while looking from the shops below can be very deceiving. Definitely not the case once you get to the facility. We quickly reached the top in a matter of minutes. My 70 year old mother was able to walk the whole facility without any problems. No stairs, beautiful views of the beach and shops. It’s definitely not a huge museum but you get to see a few things and take beautiful pictures because of how big the facility sits.

What a view! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the fort. It had an incredible view of the ocean and tons of interesting historical information. The huge grassy lawn on the way up was full of people flying kites (perfect day with lots of wind). The stairs around the fort are a little tricky, but take it slow and you'll be fine.

It’s a little confusing reading about this site but easy to understand when you get here. There are two centuries- old forts joined by an ancient city wall with big open spaces between them. One ticket will cover both forts, and you have two days to see them. We visited Castillo San Felipe del Morro today. It’s wonderful that this historic structure is so well preserved, and the sea and bay views are amazing.

Thank you for providing a detailed route. Approximately how long should we allow for this? We are planning to spend 1 full day in San Juan.

I would allow between 1 and 2 hours....you can certainly get a good overview of the fort in an hour if your time is limited.
Wedding and Safety in Old San Juan:
My duaghter plans to have her wedding on Old San Juan in March 2020. She is very concerned about Safety of her and her family for this event. The recent news hysteria and violence has her and myself very concerned. Any advice or information would be helpful for safety and understanding the violence and gang wars we hear about in the news

I agree with other comments. I have been in Puerto Rico three times since this fall, and I felt perfectly safe, at all times, in Old San Juan. I am certain there are parts of the island that are less safe, but that is true of any place. Still, my son lives there so I have spent a lot of time in the area , always feeling safe and respected. I was there alone for a couple of days as well- still felt safe and no inappropriate remarks. In fact I found everyone as vert friendly and I felt safer than I do in most American cities..

Were you on a cruise when you toured this? If so, how far of a walk was it from the ship to the fort?

Hey! No, I was not on a cruise when I toured and visited the Fort. But from the pier is about 15 minutes, walking distance, do not take a Taki, you will enjoy the walk believe me there’s a lot of things to see and enjoy in your way.
You might want to try this 2 restaurants:
1- La Cueva Del Mar
2- Casa Cortés
Enjoy your stay in beautiful Old San Juan!!!!

Can you get down to the beach from the fort? Does anyone have pictures of what the water and beach area look like. Trying to decide where to take some family pictures while we are there. Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can get down to the beach, but locals warn tourists not to go into the La Per Perla area of the beach - it is half way between the two forts that span the cost line. There really is no actual beach - just rocks and a walk way outside the wall.
Definitely worth taking photos - there are some great opportunities from the fort itself of the water.
