Great dive bar with friendly people and very good bartender. Not pretentious or snooty, and they are welcoming and friendly to tourists.

As a long-time collector of dive bars, I’ll have to say this place has solidified itself as one of my new favorite loves! Friendly and welcoming bartenders, down to earth patrons, clean enough bathrooms, cold beer, and cheap specials. Even the cocktails were made with a bit of flair. The music was just my speed and the warm breeze coming through the open windows was welcome after living through a cold, northeast U.S. winter. Coincidentally, we noticed a bottle of our favorite local gin Barr Hill displayed on a high shelf. Someone back home beat us here? We had friendly service here from Theo on our first night in OSJ, so decided to come back the next day where we met Humberto. He treated us like regulars when he played us a song from a Puerto Rican artist we had just discovered. He cranked-it while singing the second verse, “wait ‘til you hear this part”! It was highly advised to visit this place by a friend from San Juan and we are so glad we did! El Batey might be a reason we come back to OSJ soon! Mike and Jen

You’ll find no fancy piña coladas or mojitos here, but you’ll find a friendly bartender and lots of character. Great place to stop for a drink, chat with a local, and then leave something behind to contribute to the charm. Definitely a place to return.

Owner brings his dogs to work. I think that's great- but not when they are not trained and not good around people. Dog bit girl in the face tonight. He refused to help her clean up or call help for her. when the police arrived he lied to them speaking Spanish thinking the "tourists" wouldn't understand. He refused to take responsibility. So, if you go here, and you're a dog person you might get bit. The dogs regularly bark at anyone near them. It's not safe and he is horrible to not even help one of his customers who was bit by HIS dogs in HIS bar.
Her face was bloody, swollen and bruised- a normal person would have helped her.

There are plenty of bars- go to a different one.

We didn’t get drinks with dinner so that we could try another place specifically for drinks on our first night in OSJ (PR in general). We decided on El Batey instead of a nearby super popular cocktail bar. It just sounded like our pace.

It has a nice, moody ambience with the dim lighting and writing all over the walls. There is a room with a pool table and a group of friends were having a good time playing.

We had the room with tables all to ourselves for quite some time. A good size group came in a little before we were about to leave. The next evening we walked by and it was much more packed. I guess the 9 o’clock hour was good timing for us.

The drinks we had were good, a cocktail and a can of guava beer. (See pics)

(Not sure why the description in this listing mentions room for 499 of your friends. Definitely not enough room for that.)

It's old and rough around the edges....Perfect, it's the oldest bar in town they say.
And it's a Bar Lovers Bar - warm- friendly-laid back-easy going like your favorite old sweater. Bartender was laid back with lots of stories about the bar and San Juan.
Drinks were great, beer cold, conversation with other patrons was entertaining.
What more could you ask for, Old & Rough fits a lot better than modern & chik.

After being there 5 minutes, I felt like I was a long lost friend of Ian the bartender. Everyone in the bar was extremely friendly and the pours were generous.
