- Ivan E.26 contributionsAmazing sceneryWe where going to Kingston from Ocho Rios, and had taken the road to Kingston starting in Buff Bay. I definitely recommend you do the same! Very nice scenic road. There are also places to stop and get some original Blue Mountain coffee. The road isn't too rough, but an SUV is basically mandatory.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 3, 2023
- TraveldadLondon220 contributionsB1 - a beautiful drive through the blue mountainsWe drive the B1 from Buff Bay (get jerk at Glen’s) to Kingston. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but when the clouds broke the views were amazing. We stopped at Dennis’s coffee farm and had an amazing cup of coffee before another stop at Holywell and Strawberry Hill. The drive to Kingston took about 3hrs including stops. The road is narrow and a few bits are rough but our rental saloon made it fine; just take bumps carefully. We went back on A3 which is easier and about 40mins quicker.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 2, 2024

Mountain range with a breathtaking view. I had the chance to drive through it with a local guide - between Port Antonio and Kingston - and was pleasantly surprised. Very rich in greenery and vegetation with remarkable views. Highly recommended.

The long tedious trip up the mountain was terrifying at times and definitely an eye opener. Your passing through some tough places. Once up in those mountains you loose your breath with the beauty that falls on your eyes. You can see everywhere and it’s beautiful. The most coming over and through the valleys tipping the tops on the lower hills and once you’ve cleared the top it’s pure blue sky’s with not a cloud in sight.
Highly recommend to anyone who wants to see the real Jamaica on your way up and the beauty of its glory from the top.

While in Jamaica my wife and I went on the Blue Mountain Bicycle Tour. This was a grand adventure that started with a bus picking us up at our hotel and traveleing for an hour and a half through Ocho Rios and East to the Blue Mountains. While traveling, our driver kept up a continuous discourse on the Jamaican culture, politics, economics, history, and agriculture. It was very interesting and appreciated by all. We arrived after traveling up a winding one lane road that was about 3 inches wider than our bus. Arriving at the chalet built into the mountain side, we had a brunch(tasty) and were given our safety equipment. We also were introduced to Blue Mountain coffee learning how it grew, was harvested, and processed. We then went to the top of the mountain for our 18 mile trip downhill through a rainforest and coffee plantation. Our bikes were not the best but our tour guides did their best to make everyone comfortable. We started down the hill and my wife did not feel comfortable on the bike. She asked to sit in the bus that accompanied us but the guides came up with a very acceptable alternative. Soon she was riding down the mountain on the back of a bicycle built for two with one of the guides playing driver. We went through some amazing countryside that was so lovely with it's vibrant green life and sparkling waterfalls. We stopped for lunch and had a typical Jamaican meal of Jerk chicken, rice and beans and fruit. It was delicious. We then continued down the mountain stopping while the guides explained some of the herbs the locals used for medicine. Arriving at our destination we were treated to a cool dip in a mountain pool fed by a thirty foot waterfall. All in all it was a day full of adventure, learning, good food, and fun all included in the price. I recommend it to all.

Wonderful and very unique for Jamaica, but the temperature can be 20 degrees F cooler. If a real nature lover spend the day. If into coffee visit a plantation or two and get the best coffee in the world.

I have been travelling and taking trips to this remote section or my Island since 2001. Countless trips. Its a approximately 8 hours hiking from the base of the mountain to the Park which is a few kilometers from the peak. Peaceful, relaxing, back packers paradise. Cant do the long hike?.. you drive half way up using a different route. mini waterfalls, majestic forest, flowing blue mountain coffee fields, exotic plants and birds, low level clouds and thick mists........the most amazing sunrise and sunsets you will ever behold!!!!!!
A two day hike is recommended. Plan you vacation such that you have two free days to be used for your mountain adventure.

How to get to the Blue Mountains on your own, leaving from Kingston?
- Take bus 900 to Papine, leaving from the public transport centre Half Way Tree, or jump on it when passing Hope Road. Costs : only 80 JMD for a 30 minutes ride.
- After stop in Papine, cross the main square to find a minibus to Irish Town and Newcastle. This minibus will take you up in the hills, upto Red Light (last stop before minibus will turn back). Costs : only 100 JMD for a 30 minutes ride. Bad road!
- From Red Light on, you're on your own... Just follow the road, and after a 1 hour hike, and passing Rafjam B&B, you will reach Eits' cafe, which we recommend for a fresh fruit smoothie or a self grown salad. Prices are reasonable, friendly people. Robin, the owner's daughter, can provide you with a small map and more info about getting further up to Mount Edge and the Jamaican Defense Force Training Camp at St-Catherine's mountain.
- Lovely views while hiking, and we were there all by ourselves, enjoying the silence and nature.
- To go back from Eits' cafe : go down again to Red Light (1 hour walking ), wait for minibus (every half hour?) to take you to Papine (100 JM), get into bus 900 to take you to the transport centre of Half Way Tree again (80 JMD).
- We are sure there are taxi's available in Papine as well, to take you all the way up to Mount Edge etc... but we have no idea about the costs etc...
Make sure you leave early, so that you have time to relax and enjoy. We left at about 9am (transport centre) and got back about 5pm.
Enjoy this information, and the Blue Mountains!

We hike up to the peak of Blue Mountain. At 2256 meters it is the highest point in Jamaica. If you would like to see full video report search "SailingKnottyMaria" on youtube.
Trail: The trail starts at around 1254 meters and takes you through a series of switchbacks, ravines, rainforest, ridges, and coffee plantations ending up at the peak. Over all it is just over 10 km and can be easily done in 3 hours up and 2 hours down. Trail is very easy to navigate as it is almost always just a single track without any turn-offs, so no guide needed.
Getting there: It is impossible to drive there unless you have some very capable 4x4. Rental car can't get there, believe me, we tried... So what are your options? Well there are two:
1. You can easily make it to Mavis Bank where you can ask around and easily get a ride to the start of trail, but that will come out to around $60 US each way.
2. If you have an SUV you can get to Hagley Gap and get a ride to the trail from there for half the price, $30 US.
In both cases once you park your car a local will ask you for parking fee. Negotiate and pay him some Jamaican dollars when you get back, you car will be safe. May be even washed. I have a number for a guy who gave us a ride in his Suzuki if anyone wants it.
Also be prepared to pay the ranger at the ranger station half way. It was $200 jmd for locals or $20 us for tourists.
Some people get a ride to Wild Flower Lodge or Whitfield Hall and start the hike at 2 am to get to the peak at sunrise. This way there are almost no clouds at the peak and some say you can even spot Cuba. We got there around 12 pm and still had an amazing experience.

Make sure you have good planing and understanding about your trip. You need to change several vehicle and walk several hours to the peak. If you don't wanna go all the way to the peak, stopping at where the guest houses is a really nice trip as well and worth to make. Especially second vehicle trip, with a 4X4 Land Rover (don't think anything trendy, probably you never seen this model before=:)) you will hop and hop and hop.
Guest house people will try to sell you a small pouch of coffee for $20 and they will claim it to be one of theirs, but the packaging will tell you not =;)
Nice people, very kind, respectful no pushy.

Do we need to take a tour to go up the mountains or is it nice to do without a guide? Any and all info/recommendations on tours would be awesome!

I would strongly recommend that you go with a Tour Company. Sun Venture Tours and others exist and should be on-line.
