- Panagiota ZJacksonville, Florida29 contributionsHike to fallsWe were pressured to take horses, but wanted to hike, as we've done it before from a different starting point. They reluctantly let us go on foot with a guide, which was necessary to find the hidden starting point. The guide Edward was educational and helped us navigate some difficult terrain. We passed a small waterfall before arriving at the main one. The beautiful waterfall was worth the approximate hour long walk there. Like other reviews, I would recommend against the horses, as they were small and maltreated.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 30, 2023
- Bob S.30 contributionsExcellent site, careful of vendorsTrip was excellent. Know where you enter as the hike can be 1.5 miles or 3+ miles from the top. Worth the trip, but be careful of some of the vendors. The horse people at the top between the shorter and taller waterfalls, you need to be careful. Also, if you can make it up would recommend not spending for the horses on the return as the walk down is quite easy. Would avoid the group with the sign marked parkeo parada el palito. However, the waterfall is certainly worth the trip--a must see if in Samana/Las Terranas areas.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 23, 2024

This is how to easily go about it. Take a Guagua (minibus) from La Bodega Bar in Las Terranas to El Limon town centre they run every 20 minutes, journey time around 30 minutes, cost 100 Peso. Walk around 1km towards the falls on a tarmac road until you pass a church on the left hand side of the road, turn left then walk 500 metres until you reach the payment booth to the falls, pay the 50 peso entry fee. From here it is a 2.1km walk or horse ride to the falls. A lot of folk on here have said the horses are in poor condition but we did not find that to be the case. Anyway, we choose to walk it, there are 3 stream crossing near the beginning of the hike up to knee height, recommend to wear water shoes, the terrain is very rocky and muddy after rain. It took us 1 hour to reach a cafe overlooking the main falls, from here you have to negotiate 250 steps down to the smaller of the two main falls, about 15 minutes, from the lower falls it is a few minutes up to the main 50metre high falls. - Crystal A9 contributionsdefinitely worth it! (Tour not necessary)This waterfall is amazing, and yes, you can swim in the water once you get there. Mostly, my purpose in writing this review is to let people know that you can just hike to the fall yourself, you do not have to book the horseback tours. We knew we did not want to ride horseback so I had done much searching beforehand trying to figure out if it was necessary, as there are no other types of tours offered. In the end, we did pay for a hiking guide, we don't regret that decision but it was not a necessity. We pulled into a parking area, paid a parking fee and negotiated the guide. Altogether we paid around 2300 pesos (about $50) and there were 4 in our group; if you were booking any online tour you'd probably pay $65 or more per person. The benefit was that our guide routed us through a shortcut that knocked off quite a bit of walking. However, the main path was very clearly marked. It would be quite easy to pay for parking, (or perhaps park on the road for free), and then just walk the path. At the top of the footpath, before you start down the stairs to the actual waterfall, there is a booth charging an entry fee, 50 peso per person. There is also a gift shop at that spot, they take pesos, dollars, apple pay, and PayPal. Absolutely wear good walking shoes, and take water, and be prepared for a hike. There are several decent hills. My biggest tip would be, especially if you want to hike, go early. We got there about 8:15am and I think we got back to our car a little after 10:30am. At that time of day, there were only a few other people at the waterfall. It was really awesome to be able to enjoy it on our own. Also, the first of the horseback tours were just beginning as we were coming out. I can tell you, if I'd had to share that path with all the horses, that would have absolutely changed our experience! The guides doing the horseback tours really were not keeping to one side, and we had to crowd the very edge of the path a couple of times. Go early, if you want to hike.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 23, 2024

Poorly managed trip. A lot of waiting around, very few speak english so most of the time I was unsure what was going on. The guy who was to pick me up went to wrong location and then treated me poorly when I was finally picked up.
You spend a ton of time waiting around even though weather delayed the trip.
The whales were cool, the horses were poorly malnourished & the workers would put too large of riders on them and them whip them the entire time down the trail. I wanted to cry.
We were herded like cattle, it was not well organized.
When we got back to the bay for the boat ride back to the marina where we would catch our buses 2 hours back to Bavaro, the military showed up and would not allow us to leave because it was dusk, we did not have enough life vests on board nor lights on the boat.
After almost 2 hours of confusion and over 100 people trapped in Samona, they finally let 1 boat leave. We rode across the bay, 40 minutes, clinging to strangers, thinking we were all going to die because by that point it was 8:30 and fully dark. We only had a flashlight to get across the bay.
I was picked up before 7am and did not return until 11pm while only being provided 1 tiny meal.
DO NOT GO ON THIS EXCURSION. The horse riding needs to be shut down. The waterfall is not worth the extra 5 hours on the trip to see.

If you decide to go to see the falls, please walk there. It’s like 2km walk. Horses are mistreated, very skinny and in bad conditions. Road to falls is very rocky and not easy to walk for a horse, evethought guide was whipping the horse all the time to walk faster. I felt so bad for horses. Guides also whipped other horses as passing them just for a fun.
Guides told that they are not getting salary for guiding people to falls, but that’s not true. Anyway, on our way back guide started to tell us how we need to pay them and it felt quite unfomfortable in the middle of the junge. Guides also separated me and my boyfriend to ask money. When we get back and we gave some tip to guides, they just looked as like they didn’t appriciate it at all.
Waterfall is amazing, but all the other was aweful. If you want to go to the falls, please walk to dont support their bad treatment with horses.

The horses are treated badly, there cannot be any joy in riding those poor animals who are clearly not treated well or cared for at all. The hike is super muddy and honestly nothing about it was fun, me and my boyfriend decided to walk because we couldn’t bear the idea of making the horses suffer even more. Every horse also has a guide who makes the horses move with sticks they found on the ground, because they clearly do not want to walk anymore after probably carrying 20 tourists a day back and forth. The waterfall is mediocre, not worth the money and not worth the pain for the animals. Please don’t do this

The waterfall itself average at best. If you've never seen a waterfall, maybe it is worth it, but even then I'd recommend waiting for a better opportunity. What makes this a 1-star experience is the difficulty to see a less than average waterfall. 4 or 5 hours just to spend 15 minutes at an overcrowded waterfall. And that 4 to 5 hours is only factoring from Samana, not from Punta Cana or other locations. Plus factor in the difficult muddy walk or the scam with the horses/mules. The scam, you are told by the horse guide that the horse is extra and you owe 25 dollars a person. This is told on the way back from the waterfall, not before getting the horse. Per my tour guide, the horse is included in the price. Don't be scammed. Ask your tour guide if it is included.

When our driver first picked us up, he was rude, did not speak to us. He continued picking up other people and then eventually stopped on the highway with no explanation as to what was happening. Eventually we were told we were waiting to be transferred to another bus. We were transferred and the lack of communication continued. Our tour guides did not explain anything well everyone was extremely confused. On the beach we were told we could sit in a specific section and when we did a man from the restaurant told us we needed to pay or move. After lunch I am not sure what happened but the restaruant workers and tour guides were arguing seemed to be about money. Once we arrived to Samana once again no communication was given. Upon arrival at Salto Limon, already the volunteers were asking if we had money to tip, rather than attempting to make us comfortable. Two people in our group were injured and until we spoke up being spanish speakers they did not care. After our ride my tour guide let me horse go and the horse nearly ran into the street, due to carelessness. They continued asking how much we would be tipping and when. This was extremely unprofessional and unpleasant. On our ride home, once again the lack of communication was severe. We once again stopped on the side of the highway and wete transported, without communication, it was very unsettling. The tour stated it would be 10 hours and ended up beinf 15 hours. We missed dinner at our resort and were unable to eat due to being over 5 hours late. The tour was not properly advertised, saying their would be rocks and all types of dangerous things. This was extremely unpleasant and I would not recommend this excursion to anyone.

The hike is about an hour long. Anyone can enjoy walking to the waterfalls. The locals are the “tour guides” (just guys walking through a trail) who make money renting the horses. The guys are pricey and will demand a tip towards the end on top of what you already paid. They use and abuse the horses for their own profit. The horses stand in this small area with no hay or water for hours everyday. The horses are abused, mistreated, malnourished, full of worms and look like they have given up on life. Their tack is ill fitting, they use harsh bits and put chains around their mouths to make the bits even more harsh. The horses are mistreated and not given proper care. These horses are not trained for this, they just get pushed and shoved through the trail with these bits in their mouths that are uncomfortable. The tour guides had a hard time getting along amongst themselves arguing back and forth showing no respect for each other. Not a well respected place and so unprofessional. If you care about horses or any animal in general, opt out on the horse and enjoy your hike leaving with a clean conscious. Maybe one day the horses will no longer serve a purpose and be freed.

For me and my wife the hike was maybe even better than the waterfall itself. We took an early taxi to the parking where the track starts. Then started walking around 8 am. During the hike we met no-one (until the cabin at the end where you pay 50 pesos to some locals). The hike took us around 50 min without being in a rush. I strongly recommend hiking if it has not been raining and the ground is somewhat dry. On our way back we met several tours coming with other tourists in horses/donkeys. But as we went early we got to experience both the hike alone and the waterfall alone.

My boyfriend and I went for what we thought would be an exciting adventure. The breakfast we were promised was only prepackaged muffins in little bags. I was okay but it was definitely not enough to sustain my boyfriend. Next, the boat ride was a solid 45 minutes and a handful of people got boat sick although we only had one bathroom. Next we went on horseback to El Limon. They separated my boyfriend and I so we were both alone for a solid hour. The horses were incredibly malnourished and struggled to carry us along the trails.. It was really hard to see. I offered to walk because it seemed as though my horse was going to collapse, but the guide said, "no, it's just an animal." Not only did I feel terrible for the horse but I was honestly seriously afraid it was going to fall and I would be injured too. The whole thing with the horses being so malnourished and mistreated was disturbing enough not to go on the event. Then when you get to the waterfall you have to walk what felt like 1000 steps. Most of our group struggled. Then when we finally got to the waterfall there were people everywhere! It was so incredibly crowded considering that waterfall isn't that bit. Finally when the day was over I tipped my guide and he was pretty rude about it, despite it being a generous tip. Do not recommend.

We did this trip through Nexus tours. The route for 1/2 hour/45 minutes is a treacherous horse ride —and one feels very sad and sorry for the horses who are whipped to “vamanos “. And I also felt that the horse could tumble at any moment and it wouldn’t be his fault.
Muddy with deep puddles as well as a number of rocks with elevation changes. Upon arrival back, I saw a horse and guide rider slide sideways and go down. I don’t know if the horse or rider were hurt.
Then there’s the hike of approximately 18-20 NY floors..or approx 280 steps. Another half hour to 45 minutes? You just go down to the waterfall, where there are a lot of people, and then back up on really muddy and rocky terrain.
You will have a guide who will eventually tell you they aren’t paid and work on tips. I fell on the way down and then had trouble making it up. Make sure you’re hydrated and physically fit, as I was neither of these! We tipped our guides $20 each, but I wish we had more as they were the real heros. I tried to send additional tips through the hotel, to no avail…so bring plenty of cash!
At the top, before starting out, one could rent free boots, but if you wanted socks so your feet didn’t marinate in the sweat of others, you had to buy socks. None of this was clearly stated in the booking, except for the physically fit part. I would have worn better hiking shoes had I known.

hi can anyone suggest if a prepurchase day trip el limon is available? or would it be better to purchase when we arrive in samana?
can anyone suggest who we can purchase from?

Written November 28, 2018
Buon viaggio.

Ciao ma posso entrare senza guida a piedi. Si paga un ingresso?? O è obbligatorio pagare passeggiata a cavallo con guida. Eventualmente a che ora si organizza la visita? Grazie a tutti

My question is whats the health of these poor horses , some of them look so under nourished ? Not to mention the weight of some of these people on what seems to be a very small horse for the size it's carrying. This is a very sad sight indeed.
