We were pressured to take horses, but wanted to hike, as we've done it before from a different starting point. They reluctantly let us go on foot with a guide, which was necessary to find the hidden starting point. The guide Edward was educational and helped us navigate some difficult terrain. We passed a small waterfall before arriving at the main one. The beautiful waterfall was worth the approximate hour long walk there. Like other reviews, I would recommend against the horses, as they were small and maltreated.

Trip was excellent. Know where you enter as the hike can be 1.5 miles or 3+ miles from the top. Worth the trip, but be careful of some of the vendors. The horse people at the top between the shorter and taller waterfalls, you need to be careful. Also, if you can make it up would recommend not spending for the horses on the return as the walk down is quite easy. Would avoid the group with the sign marked parkeo parada el palito. However, the waterfall is certainly worth the trip--a must see if in Samana/Las Terranas areas.

There seems to be no detailed explanation of how to get to El Limon falls independently from Las Terranas. This is how to easily go about it. Take a Guagua (minibus) from La Bodega Bar in Las Terranas to El Limon town centre they run every 20 minutes, journey time around 30 minutes, cost 100 Peso. Walk around 1km towards the falls on a tarmac road until you pass a church on the left hand side of the road, turn left then walk 500 metres until you reach the payment booth to the falls, pay the 50 peso entry fee. From here it is a 2.1km walk or horse ride to the falls. A lot of folk on here have said the horses are in poor condition but we did not find that to be the case. Anyway, we choose to walk it, there are 3 stream crossing near the beginning of the hike up to knee height, recommend to wear water shoes, the terrain is very rocky and muddy after rain. It took us 1 hour to reach a cafe overlooking the main falls, from here you have to negotiate 250 steps down to the smaller of the two main falls, about 15 minutes, from the lower falls it is a few minutes up to the main 50metre high falls. We are in our 60s, we left Las Terranas at 8.45 and returned to the stating point at 13.00

This waterfall is amazing, and yes, you can swim in the water once you get there. Mostly, my purpose in writing this review is to let people know that you can just hike to the fall yourself, you do not have to book the horseback tours. We knew we did not want to ride horseback so I had done much searching beforehand trying to figure out if it was necessary, as there are no other types of tours offered. In the end, we did pay for a hiking guide, we don't regret that decision but it was not a necessity. We pulled into a parking area, paid a parking fee and negotiated the guide. Altogether we paid around 2300 pesos (about $50) and there were 4 in our group; if you were booking any online tour you'd probably pay $65 or more per person. The benefit was that our guide routed us through a shortcut that knocked off quite a bit of walking. However, the main path was very clearly marked. It would be quite easy to pay for parking, (or perhaps park on the road for free), and then just walk the path. At the top of the footpath, before you start down the stairs to the actual waterfall, there is a booth charging an entry fee, 50 peso per person. There is also a gift shop at that spot, they take pesos, dollars, apple pay, and PayPal. Absolutely wear good walking shoes, and take water, and be prepared for a hike. There are several decent hills. My biggest tip would be, especially if you want to hike, go early. We got there about 8:15am and I think we got back to our car a little after 10:30am. At that time of day, there were only a few other people at the waterfall. It was really awesome to be able to enjoy it on our own. Also, the first of the horseback tours were just beginning as we were coming out. I can tell you, if I'd had to share that path with all the horses, that would have absolutely changed our experience! The guides doing the horseback tours really were not keeping to one side, and we had to crowd the very edge of the path a couple of times. Go early, if you want to hike.
