Incredible beach with white sand and warm, clean water. We strongly recommend the Don Pepe restaurant with fresh seafood and extremely kind & friendly staff. Also worth to mention the drinks.

This beach is about 20 to 30 minutes drive from Havana. The beach is very nice but the waves can be fairly strong. I was there with a 6 year old who had lots of fun but I felt I needed to stay close. The beach has chairs and umbrellas and sellers walk up and down the beach selling drinks and snacks. Just off the beach there are loads of street food vendors and there is a large carpark with an attendant who keeps an eye on the car.

The beach deserves 5*... yet it was littered with empty cans of beer, plastic cups and glass bottles. And despite the thousands of (Sunday) visitors there are not communal facilities (or we have not found them). It is a shame for such a great and well accessible place for locals and tourists alike.

How to get there:
The Blue (T3) air conditioned Transtur bus departs daily, every 40 minutes (9AM - 6PM) from Parque Central at the curb directly across from Hotel Inglaterra.
It takes about 35 minutes to arrive in Playas del Este (where Santa Maria Beach is located).
The cost is $5CUC - ROUNDTRIP.
If the line is long; there is an alternative. Myself and 4 other tourists waiting in line hired a taxi for $15CUC/$3CUC each; versus waiting 40 minutes for the next T3 bus.
There are taxis lined up and waiting for the opportunity. Also classic cars.

In Playas del Este there is just a single road with hotels on the land side and the other side is a long stretch of beach, which you cannot see from the road.
There are walking paths which lead to the beach.
There are (2) T3 bus stops along the road for your return trip back to Havana.
The T3 buses back to Havana are also every 40 minutes.
Yes, I paid the full fare ($5CUC) for the return bus journey; but what are a few dollars, versus waiting in line to get there :-).
FYI - Taxis back to Havana are more expensive than $15CUC - negotiate!

Beach chairs and umbrellas - $2CUC each
There are places to eat on the beachside of the road with bathrooms.

I’ve been to this beach 4 times. During June, Feb and recently in August (twice). Coming from NY it’s a really nice beach.
I’ve shared a cab and have also taken the tourist bus. Both leaving from the Plaza in front of the Hotel Inglaterra. The bus is 5 CUC round trip and drips you off at 3 different points. I recommend not getting off at the first stop if u intend on coming home later in the day if taking the bus. Only reason is that this is the last pickup on the bus if heading back to Havana and the bus may be filled before they get to you. So you may have to wait for a few buses before being picked up. The bus picks up till 7. If you take a cab many will set up a pick up time and spot to pick you up. Don’t worry they are very reliable.

If it’s your first time I would suggest the Tropicoco stop. This stop has kayak rentals and also have rental lounge chairs and umbrellas (they all do) but this one even in the slow season has food service. So u can order drinks and food. I’ve had the fish. It’s always very good. There are also musical bands that pass by and will play music if u pay.

Beach is clean, pretty clear and relaxing. If you are in Havana I suggest one day at the beach.

Beautiful, free beach 20 min from old Havana. Relatively clean and quiet but few amenities are available (no free toilets). It’s 20 CUC one way for a taxi or take the Habana Bus Tour (“hop on hop off” bus) for 5 CUC, round trip. The Habana Bus Tour T3 line starts at Central Park in Havana, stops at El Morro and then runs almost directly to the beach. The beach bus stops are: Hotel Megano (west end), Tropicoco (middle) and Atlantico (east end).
On the return trip, board the bus at Hotel Atlantico in front of the “Rancho don Pepe” restaurant because it’s the first stop and the bus fills up quickly, especially at the end of the day. The last buses run at 5:20pm and 6pm from here but they will be completely full and anyone who can’t get on the bus is on their own (taking a taxi back).
The beach is free but you can rent chairs and umbrellas for 2 CUC each. Also, watch out for jellyfish on the beach and in the water in early April (man o war type).

We wanted a couple hours at the beach while visiting Havana. We took a taxi here. The weather was perfect for us! We paid $6 for 2 chair and an umbrella rental. They have some sport rental equipment but we didn't use any. We did however order mojitos from the bar. $2.50 for a mojito! The sand is smooth and nice to walk on. The water was a beautiful blue/green.

Soooooorelaxing. There is lounge chairs and umbrellasfor about $2 a piece for the entire day rental. Also there is food up and down the strip for sale. There is also locals who sell drinks in coconuts. Taxis are lined up so no need to worry about transportation. If your planning a trip to Cuba, give this beach a try..

Beautiful beaches about 10 or 15 miles outside of Havana. Those classic car drivers will take you there for $40 or $50 (CUC). There is also a public bus that costs $5 for a round trip ticket. The bus leaves from the central plaza in Old Havana and it is an Air conditions tour bus which leaves about every 30 minutes.
