An unexpectedly interesting and fascinating place.

Pietrelcina is the birthplace of San Padre Pio, and everything about this town centres on this one person. Whilst not in any way religious myself, I must admit to being somewhat in awe of the whole place. The convent itself was sponsored by a rich American lady (whose name, sadly, eludes me), who was so impressed by meeting Padre Pio (he died in 1968) that she wanted to 'do' something for the town. And what was achieved with the convent is quite amazing and most impressive. Whilst Pietrelcina is not on the typical tourist route, it is a very worth-while diversion off the beaten track.
