Ometepe is really a great place. It is remote and more rural feeling than Granada or San Juan Del Sur but in a good way. It has more of a small town vibe. A little slower pace with very kind and friendly people. It's an island vibe for sure and there's very little in the way of commerce going on. The scenery is gorgeous as well with a handful of easily accessed activities and things to do. I'm glad we went and I'm sure anyone else going would feel the same.

Our son visited the Island a few years ago and highly recommended it to us. We finally made it there and spent twelve days roaming around hanging out with locals. The island is very friendly and if you stay more than a few days you will make lots of Nico friends. The entire island has a laid back atmosphere set against stunning beauty and gorgeous beaches. We enjoyed the towns as much as the more rural areas. We hiked to the top of a volcano, soaked in a beautiful mineral pool and walked beautiful beaches. You can see why we think it’s a little corner of paradise!Would love to go back and spend more time.

You can't really say you have visited Nicaragua without going to ometepe. I went to cascada san Ramón and hiked volcano Concepción. I think that three nights and three days is the ideal, or more if you like a more relaxing, laid-back lifestyle.

Ometepe Island is basically two volcanoes joined by a stretch of land. There is a road that goes around each of the volcanoes although it is unpaved and rough at the south end. There are regular local buses that travel on schedule. You can rent scooters and motorcycles quite reasonably. At this time, they have been suffering from the decline in tourism since the unrest in 2018 so there are a lot of places that are cheap and a lot that look closed. Both volcanoes can be climbed although Conception is hard and almost always in clouds at the top. You really should have a guide for both. Conception is active so there is steam rising from it in places. There is a stretch of beach close to Santa Cruz but it isn't very wide, has vegetation washed up and isn't maintained at this time. The best beach is a small beach at Playa Mango near Merida. It has a great view of the volcano, a swing over the water and good food. Other things to see are the falls at San Ramon, Ojo de Agua or just tour around the island.

Four people staying in Granada want to go to Ometepe for a day trip. Possible? Is it best to hire a guide or can we get to the ferry and make our way around the island on our own?

It is possible, but it would make for a long and rushed day, as others suggested. My family and I hired a driver to take us to the ferry. Because we were on Ometepe for several days, we did not hire a guide. Ometepe, although lots of amazing things to attract tourist, still had a very rural feel and we were lucky that we had someone in my family who speaks fluent Spanish. If you have no small children, then if you don't hire a guide, rent bikes or mopeds. The island is very easily navigatable since there is only 1 major road. I would highly recommend more than 1 day. While We liked Granada, we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Ometepe and would love to return!
Hey, Just the info I needed. I am renting a car for the week. Arrive Managua on a Sunday at 1:25. Given customs, pick up car etc.
How far should we drive or try to get to me at early ferry for Ometepe on Monday? Or is it possible to do on Sunday. I think we would miss last ferry.
Anyway, any recs on just staying in managua or trying to get to a closer town would be great.
Have looked at several places to stay on island but not decided yet.
Then probably 2 nights here, 1 night beach, 1 night Leon and back out.
Thanks for the ferry tips and any other tips in advance:)

There are several ferries that go to Ometepe, we caught one at 11:00 am in San Jose and the ride takes about an hr. If you rent the car in Managua you could take it in the ferry with you, but you don’t really need a car in Ometepe, you could rent an ATV or bike on the Island, we hired a tour guide that drove us around for about $80/day (we were a group of 8), I would suggest spending the night in Managua and taking an early ferry to the Island on Monday, everything closes super early in Ometepe around 7:30 pm so you wouldn’t want to get there late, keep in mind the sun sets around 5:30-6:00pm.
There are some good places in Managua where you could stay and have dinner.

I am so sorry for the delay I hope I didn't miss you! If you hike volcano maderas you are in the JUNGLE. It doesn't get more up close and authentic than that!

My wife and I fly in to Nicaragua on the evening of May 3rd - we have the 4th-9th to see 3 target places
1 Ometepe Island: goal 4 days - best place to stay on beach? Best place to rent quad cycle?
2.Granada: 2 days and take in Live Volcano tour on one of those days - can you recommend tour company to take us from hotel in Granada to see live volcano - we want a guided tour and can be with a group for that excursion.
What is the best itinerary in your opinon and best way to get to each without renting a car (I drive enough as it is!).

Hi! I'm traveling to Nicaragua next week. I plan on visiting Ometepe but i'm staying in San Juan Del Sur and taking a shared shuttle to the ferry. That is also an option for you. Alternatively, look into Xalli Ometepe Beach Hotel or Hotel Villa Paraiso are both on the beach. There's also Totoco Eco-Lodge on Ometepe Island ( on the slopes of Maderas Volcano), not sure about renting ATVs. The Tribal Hotel in Granada is stunning!!!! As for volcano tours, look into Tierra Tours or Julio Tours. Transportation around Nicaragua can be done by taxi or shared shuttle. Adelante, Bigfoot Hostel, offer shared shuttles to your desired destination.

How can I get to Punta Jesus Maria from the ferry?

Sorry, I erred on the bus fares. The fare will be about $0.25. The bus that goes right down to the San Jose ferry will probably be going to Altagracia. Walk up to the road to catch the bus that will be going toward Punta Jesus Maria (to the left).

Xalli, Ometepe Beach Hotel is by far the best, although a little on the expensive side! For a much much cheaper alternative but still a great place on the beach, go to Santa Cruz: Casa Hotel Istiam.

Hola,
Hi all!
I see lots of information about the ferries to the island, but somehow I'm still left with a few questions. Perhaps someone could help me figure out the following answers:
How much does it cost for a the ferry from San Jorge to Moyogalpa? (per person & per car)
Is there a website or phone number that I could consult with any further questions?
Thanks so much (in advance) for your help!

the ferry was about $4-5 each way per person in May 2015..was easy to buy tickets at the ferry office at the port before departure.
