Un museo bello e molto interessante
Aug 2020
In addition to the building, noteworthy are the artistic pieces in the museum, especially sculptures from the ancient period, through the Roman era to the Middle Ages. Also noteworthy is the collection of Greek-Roman vases, coins, as well as the collection concerning "the mother". In short, a museum not to be missed!

Lovely, small museum

This museum is off the beaten tourist path so you just might have it to yourself - at least we did. The part I loved most was that a museum staff member saw I was traveling with my two-young daughters and wanted to make sure we made it to see the mother statues (a very large collection, if not the largest). They were absolutely captivating.

Italic, Greek, Roman and Etruscan antique beauty!

I visited the museum several times and I am always fascinate by is antiques sculptures and paintings as it was the first time! It exposes the unique ancestral italic sculptures of the mater matutae: unique pece of art!
It has also one of the major collection of Greek Etrurian antiquities in south Italy! Definitively worth to visit! Additionally, neoclassic and renaissance art works can be observed too!

Strongly recommended!!!

An interesting experience

This is an an excellent small museum close to the centre of Capua. There is a fine collection of steles (ancient funeral slabs) and mother statues, symbolising fertility, and dating from some hundred years bc. There are rooms dedicated to ceramics, bronzes and coins. Also pictures from the 15th to 17th century. This museum is well worth a visit if you are in the area, perhaps to see the amphitheatre at S. Maria Capua Vetere and the Royal Palace at Caserta.

A little different

Every town has an archaeological museum and it can become boring. However, this museum is a little gem. As well as the exhibits the staff are absolutely charming and helpful. When we arrived, just as it opened for the afternoon, one member of staff unlocked the main doors for us and showed us the circuit around the museum, another chased after us and gave us a (for once) good English translation of what each room was about. And a third, gave us an espresso coffee at the end. We left with a very warm feeling, as these little touches make a visit.
The museum is well laid out and the information explained briefly what each room contained. The route is signposted and there is a lift as well as the stairs. The main exhibits of note are the sculptures of the mother figures with children ... these are squat female statues of all sizes and most hold one or two swaddled children, however, we did count a few with 12! They were carved to give thanks to the Goddess of Fertility between They were discovered and then mostly left in situ as not deemed of value! There were something approaching 200 found. It is worth visiting the museum for these alone. Other notable exhibits are the statues from the Frederick Towers / Gate. If you are in the area, it is worth a visit.

A Treasure Chest of a Museum
May 2014 • Solo
An absolutely stunning collection of Roman monumental masonry, ceramics , coins and figures together with some pre christian Mother figure sculpture, some rather drab Bourbon period paintings and some excellent religious paintings.

Recently refurbished the museum is a joy of well labelled ( in Italian and English ) displays with evocative lighting and superb ramping for disability access.

Sadly for the museum, but luckily for you the museum attracts few visitors so a visit is a relaxed and special experience. Whne will people wake up to the hidden treasures like this in the South of Italy. Superb !!
