- RonandLinChristchurch, United Kingdom142 contributionsA must visit. We used a driver to get here. Very long and steep approach to the car park .Be aware of modesty dress code , knees covered, wearing a sarong or trousers. The Big Buddha is very impressive and views great over surrounding area. Lots of information about Buddhism and famous Buddhists. Well worth a visit, allow an hour plus. On drive back down you will pass an attraction where elephants are tethered and rides etc offered, leave you to make your own mind up about that.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 16, 2024
- deborahcT7868HWHampshire, United Kingdom45 contributionsBeautiful StatueReally beautiful with absolutely stunning views. It has a very calm and spiritual feeling to it. As mentioned in other reviews, there are a lot of steps to the top but well worth the effort. Even the small children in our group managed to make it up there so not too challenging. We took a taxi as it's a very, very steep and winding road. We probably spent about 1.5 hours & our driver was happy to wait for us. Definitely worth a visit.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 21, 2024
- なつみJapan11 contributionsMajestic and full of natureA must-see place if you go to Phuket I was there for about an hour I took a Grab taxi from Patong. It's on top of a mountain, so I asked the taxi I took to go there to wait until I got back. It seems like it's hard to catch a taxi up there... It might be better to go on a tour... Admission is free, but you just need to be careful about what you wear.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 21, 2024
- Lost In AsiaSingapore, Singapore3,527 contributionsStill work in progrssthe Big Buddha is located on top of a steep hill, it is advisable to drive up but we do note that there are some who prefer to hike up. You need to be modestly dressed, there are shawls or cloths to rent/wear to cover yourself if they think you're inappropriately dressed. The whole place still look like work-in-progress. there are many panels discussing the benefit of meditation. You can get monks blessing here, join the queue. it is a great view point to see the Adaman Sea and its surrounding.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 22, 2024
- ug-mucMunich, Germany438 contributionsVery impressive, but busyI was there at around 5pm in high season and it was still pretty busy. It is probably much quieter and better early, also because the Buddha then sees the sun from the front. It is rightly number 1 on Phuket.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 22, 2024
- addesign2022Winnipeg, Canada13 contributionsEasy site to see, worth keeping on your itineraryEasy to access, free admission, beautiful site. Lots of great information about the Buddha and the faith. Beautiful views of Phuket from the top and lots of cab options to get there and back so a tour is not necessary.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 1, 2024
- Navigator06742335445221 contributionsMarble BuddhaHigh up on a hill & seen from miles, this Big Buddha is reached via, a very steeply climbing road, through jungle vegetation. A very imposing Buddha reached by a few steps - luckily not too many to climb in the heat! Made of cut marble mosaic pieces, you can see the worked marble ready for any restoration. You can walk all around seeing various other statues, including a golden Buddha. Ribbons & golden prayers hang on trees & fences - you can write one too! Wonderful views across Phuket from all around. Make sure you cover legs & shoulders, otherwise will need to purchase a shawl/sarong on entry!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 12, 2024

- RamboNWAlbertaSpruce Grove, Canada647 contributionsFantastic!Family of 5, we took a cab from Karon beach hotel here. Driver stayed and waited for us for an hour and took us back. Very good way to do it. The site is easy to walk and visit. Great views from the top of Kata Beach area and also Karon Beach . There are lots of things to see up top, great photo ops and of course the amazing Buddha! This is a massive Buddha and in such a spectacular place! We got some great photos, learned something and saw some monkeys which granddaughter liked! An hour is about exactly right to see this site and free entry! Lots of places to buy stuff up here and all very reasonably priced. About a 30-40 minute cab ride each way from north end of Karon Beach. Was about 2.5 hours, cab driver was great and waited for us, only 1000 baht for that service was great.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 18, 2024
- Jose Luis RSantander, Spain350 contributionsFree mandatory visit in PhuketIf you go on your own, you can park your car or bike free of charge. The entrance is also free but be aware, specially in hot season, that you have to dress properly as you are in a religious spot. Women cannot wear shorts or show her backs. There are some shops where you can buy drinks, snacks or a souvenir. Prices are not expensive After visiting the Big Buddha, when go down to the exit, you can find monks and donate some money for them; for instance, me and my son donated 100 thai baht each and the monks gave us a rope bracelet. Finally, its quite easy to see monkeys in the forest around the Big Buddha and at the car park. Dont play with them as the can bite youVisited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 18, 2024

As a lover of adventure and discovery, I had the opportunity to visit the Big Buddha of Phuket last week, an experience that had a profound impact on me. Situated on top of a hill, this impressive monument is not only a symbol of peace but also an exceptional viewpoint on the island of Phuket.
Accessing the site proved to be an adventure in itself. As mentioned by many visitors, the climb is steep, but I chose to take on the challenge by scooter, starting from Phuket Old Town. This 30-minute ride took me through heavy traffic before arriving at more serene, winding roads, providing a scenic getaway before reaching the summit.
Arriving at the top, I was struck by the grandeur of the white marble Buddha, majestic and serene, dominating the island from a height of 25 meters. Despite the influx of tourists, the site maintains an atmosphere of tranquility, with each visitor seeming to share a moment of silent respect and admiration.
I was particularly touched by the possibility of purchasing marble tablets on which visitors can inscribe their wishes or thoughts, a practice which adds a personal and spiritual dimension to the visit. This reflects the community and participatory aspect of the site, where everyone can leave a trace of their passage.
The view from the top is absolutely stunning, offering a 360-degree panorama of Phuket and its surroundings.
I strongly advise future visitors to plan their own transportation for the return trip, as finding a way to leave the site can be tricky, and local taxi fares tend to be high. Additionally, I recommend bringing water and wearing appropriate clothing, as advised by regulars and local guides.

The Buddha is one to behold, 43mtrs high on top of a hill just outside Phuket Town. This huge religious ediface is made of concrete and coated with white square marble tiles. Open to public access from 0630 til 1830, giving wide-ranging views for the best of sunset and sunrise. 94 steps up to the support platform, but you have to decend a different way so as not to turn your back to Buddha. It is worth a visit, dress respectfully and don't offend. We used taxi from Kata at Thb1000 return with 1 hour stop at site. Seems to be the same price for public taxis.

The Big Buddha in Phuket is more than just a landmark; it's a truly spiritual retreat. The gleaming white marble statue is impressive up close, and the panoramic views from the top are breathtaking. We recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon for a quieter experience and to escape the midday heat.

The serene ambiance around Big Buddha Phuket creates a captivating experience, especially during the tranquil evenings. The intricate white Buddha statue stands majestically, offering a sense of tranquility against the stunning backdrop of the scenic surroundings. The climb up the stairs not only provides a breathtaking panoramic view but also adds a sense of adventure to the visit.
The spiritual atmosphere is heightened by the presence of people engaged in meditation. Respectful silence or even participating in the meditation can enhance the overall experience, allowing visitors to connect with the spiritual essence of the site. The fact that entry is free makes it an excellent addition to any budget-conscious traveler's itinerary, offering a meaningful and cost-effective cultural excursion. Overall, a visit to Big Buddha Phuket is not just about witnessing a magnificent statue but immersing oneself in a truly peaceful and spiritual setting.

Have been here 3 times with years imell3m and for vargarnsstof it has been a huge experience. More and more are being built for every time we visit the Big Buddha . This time it is unfortunately closed due to the safety of removed soil , due to a lot of rainfall so they are repairing the stability of the building work

This awe-inspiring statue of Buddha is a serene, meditative experience and is worth all the time you have to spend. This enormous statue is on a mountaintop, so it’s nice and cool, but I still recommend coming here at sunset so you can also appreciate the glorious colors. You also get a wonderful view of the surrounding scenery. This place emanates peaceful serenity and a connection to something larger than ourselves.
They’re still working on finishing construction here, so be careful where you step.

Visited Big Buddha on a slightly overcast day. Check the weather before travelling. Check you are adhering to the dress code, otherwise you find yourself in a difficult situation (i.e challenging your attire to other people’s clothes). Find the spot for the monkeys. I was able to catch the 7 minute meditation session, and receive a free book on buddhism. Gorgeous views of Phuket. Not too crowded.
Big Buddha is massive at 45 metres high, beautiful marble used to finish the statue. Perfectly placed on Nakkerd Hill. Preferably visit sunset or sunrise (closes at 06:30).
They should include a decent tourist shop for memorabilia of the actual experience. Mode of transport was the local bus from Patong Beach (2 buses to the trail point 140 bht). A pet shop on the foot of trail with all animals to include ( chickens, dogs, cats, hedgehogs, birds, goats, snakes etc.). Two elephants on the hike up that smelt awful, possibly well fed as the tourist paid to feed them but overall not a good scenario.

It has free entry, but they check for decency.
Some people had to buy fabric* at 50 baht to cover up short dresses, skirts, or shorts.
Within the temple, there is a shop to support charity.
Right next to the buddha, it was impossible to get a picture without capturing other tourists because it was crowded.
There is a chance to meditate for 7 minutes via a guide for free, and he offers mediation guide booklets as takeaways.
There was a place where people were lining up to kneel before the monk to have something tied on their hand. In the same zone, 3 other monks were meditating.
I wanted to try it, but we were rushing back to the van to avoid getting rained on.
It was brief, but the mediation aura was so intriguing.
It still lingers.

We traveled on our own, we took a taxi first to Wat Chalong Temple, and then here, to Big Buddha, this is on the way.
The place is the calling card of Phuket, we ran into funny monkeys, made a wish on the gong, and went upstairs. Cool! Especially at sunset. But there is a chance that it will be difficult to leave because of the super high prices for a taxi - so don’t be afraid of the dark and go down to the cafe with flashlights, literally 5 minutes. And from there it will be cheaper to take a taxi or a ride.

Amazing place to visit. The statue towering above you needs to be experienced, and the views have to bee seen in real life. Free entry, open from 6am to 6:30PM, would be lovely to see the sunset.
I think some construction is still ongoing, the concrete steps going up are very rough on your bare feet. Dress modestly, and remove shoes, this is a religious site.
I visited as part of a half-day tour, we were only given 40 minutes to see the Big Buddha. It was not long enough for me, it was just enough time to walk from car park, see the view, up to the statue, look around and down and then out to the car park.
Next time I will spend longer there, and not go part of a tour. Next time I would spend more time, not rushing, sit for a bit and immerse in the experience.

Hi. We are staying in The Nature Phuket - Phuket and looking at the best way to get to The Big Buddha. Would it be better to go to it from Old Town?
Any advice would be great thanks

Big Buddha is closed by the Thai government due to a large land slide caused by apparently unauthorised construction on a car park. No information if it will be open again. I have been in the past and it was interesting, but Wat Chalong had much more. I would recommend a visit there.
