In terms of Chinese cuisine, I am most familiar with Cantonese food. So for my first visit to Taipei and Taiwan, I booked Taipei Eats' Iconic Food Tour (aka Xinyi District Backstreets Food Tour) as an introduction to their cuisine. The 4 hour tour was informative, fun and tasty. We had 2 tour guides: Jean from Toronto and an apprentice whose name I can't recall, but she was raised in the US and went to Cornell.

The tour had many stops and took us through "backstreets" of the Xinyi District, where the iconic Taipei 101 building is located. We traipsed through a classic wet market, where food of all kinds (raw, cooked, dried, still alive, etc.) are on offer alongside non-food items like clothing. The most memorable stops for me were the Taiwanese beef "burger" gua bao, stinky tofu (some taste like bleu cheese), a boba tea place, Taiwanese pancakes, and a sorbet place. Jean purchased bottled water for those of us in need. We also stopped at a betel nut dispensary, but I declined to try this carcinogenic stimulant than you chew like tobacco and then spit out, turning your saliva orange!

Our tour was altered a bit because we happened to go on Election Day, and 2 of the usual stops, including one offering Taiwan's iconic dumplings, were closed so the proprietors could go vote. We also stopped at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall and were able to see the changing of the guards.

Overall tasty, informative and recommended.

An absolute MUST try when visiting Taipei! Taiwan is known around the world for its incredible food and getting to know the history of the food, the local favorites and many interesting facts about the culinary experience is a great way to begin your adventure in Taipei! Our guide Tina was so knowledgable, friendly and eager to share her knowledge and fun facts with everyone in the group. There is sooooo much food you will be eating so come hungry! The variety of food she had shown us and that we tasted was delicious! Everything is so well organized. As you walk through the Dadaocheng district Tina shares all she knows about the architecture, food and more so you not only get a food tour but a well rounded Food + Taipei/Taiwan history tour! I highly recommend Taipei Eats, there is no better company out there!

We had a great day eating lots of traditional Taiwanese dishes and desserts! Tina also accommodated our diet restrictions and there was plenty of food to eat, so come hungry.

As my group has all lived in Asia and mainland China for a long time, we thought the Old School tour would give us more Taiwan specific treats. The booking ended up only being our group of friends and we were so impressed by Tina's knowledge of local cuisine, excitement to share the history of each dish, and flexibility and overall willingness to curate a wonderful experience for us.

The beauty of Taiwan's food is that it embraces and fuses together elements from its multicultural history and population to create some of the most interesting and best foods for all different palate preferences. We easily tried 15+ dishes throughout the tour and were so happy she modified the tour as we went to introduce us to new foods. By the end of the tour, I felt able to use the local language and slang and to describe these foods.

I would gladly book another tour through Taipei Eats on my next trip to Taiwan. Best value for money of any food tour I've done across 3 continents.

The food was amazing and the back round combined with the knowledge that Tina brought to the table was amazing, im positive that without Tina in dept knowledge of food and vendor type and location i would not have been able to experience the true traditional taiwanese food.

We're really glad we took this really unique tour and intro to DaDaoCheng - while the area is distinct and "known," the intro to various 40, 60, and 80-yr vendors of traditional foods was invaluable. Our wonderful guide Jean also gave us a good amount of history and background on the area, how it developed, and how it has changed. A great time!
