The area
Neighborhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth. The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

What a wonderful, peaceful place! Asian temples are usually like this, and the Confucius Temple in Tainan is no exception. There are small historical displays, too, so you can learn a bit about the temple and Confucism in Ancient China. It's a great place to spend an afternoon or part of it before heading across the street to visit one of the many restaurants or cafes in the area.

As the former capital of Formosa, Tainan is dotted with historic buildings. The Confucius Temple is a notable example. The vast structure marks the literary scene of Koxinga's Taiwan. The whole place is oddly new after recent renovations.

We visited a number of Confucius temples during our tour of Taiwan and we thought this was the best of them all. The exhibition rooms are particularly interesting because they focus more on the rituals associated with the temples and festivals rather than the sage himself and the musical instruments used in such rituals. Gardens are perfectly tended and as with all temples the decoration is immaculate. A peaceful place to sit and admire the scene.

A beautiful and well-tended temple dedicated to Confucian beliefs. After visiting many Buddhist and Daoist temples, it was refreshing to visit somewhere that was simpler in its lines and less flamboyant in its decorations.

This is a serene and peaceful temple within a nice park where you can sit quietly and contemplate the atmosphere. There is a museum for you to browse in the temple grounds.

Confucius was an important figure in Chinese history. He emphasized the role of upholding ethical behavior in governance and public service.. He is not a god; he is described as a Sage. His teachings formed the basis of traditional philosophy in scholarship and government. Confucius is venerated at this traditional temple, Confucius is not worshipped as a god, although it is quite common for scholars and students to seek his guidance.

I recommend visiting this temple as a way to learn about the various ways in which Confucius was celebrated.

There was a small admission of 40NTD.

The main courtyard contained one structure with plaques commemorating the temple from the various dynasties.

In the back there was some type of event so that area was closed.

Rooms off to the side of the courtyard were filled with lots of artifacts and good information about the Confucius rituals.

Before I left there was a table where visitors could stamp a piece of paper and write up their wishes and post on the gate before they left.

Like most of the older buildings, just the name/location is old but the whole area has been refurbished. Unfortunately when we went there, the main building is under renovation. So, nothing much there. Lots of squirrels nearby as there are people feeding them.
