I love Checheng! Pretty n serene. We did not try the famous wooden bucket rice (it's just the usual rice, pork chop n pickled veg but served or sold in a cute wooden bucket) cos it's still early. But if you're there, look for the plum wine. It's very nice. I bought the rail princess (铁路公主)wine (lower alcohol level) n my friend bought rail uncle (铁路叔叔)wine (higher alcohol level). Both are nice n not expensive too. It's a pretty place to take pics!

The areas around the station provided a nice, easy walk for my family with young kids. My son loved the old train carriages and the logging pond -- he's a Thomas the train fan and all these reminded him of the logging trains at Misty Island. Some interesting craft/gift shops around the station and there was a woodcraft shop where my children did some DIY activities -- prices are not cheap but the children had fun. There were some interesting eateries as well but these were not opened while we were there in the am.

Nice little area which we had fun on the tracks etc. Relaxing place to spend some time on the Jiji line.

Checheng (車埕) is one of the most serene towns you can find in Taiwan! It's a quiet small place where you can retreat for a weekend away when the busy and gloomy city gets you down.
Checheng, situated along our way to Sun Moon Lake, is the terminal station of Nantou Tourist Railroad-Jiji line. This mountain town was once famous for the power station, the lumbering, and the coal industry since 1919. Its railroads were built mainly for transporting timber. With its rich history, this town makes us felt like we've walked into a 'time machine' 80 years back. However during the terrible 921 Earthquake in Jiji back in 1999, Checheng Station was also destroyed. So what we have see is a re-built wooden station
There is the Logging Museum that you can visit. But the most beautiful scene in this town is their ecology pond that was used to store big logs. Other places that you can explore in this town is their old street where the locals reside. Since we had visited Checheng on a Monday, our driver says the town is packed with tourists on weekends or public holidays.
So when you are by Jiji Station by train, don’t forget to continue your journey by the last stop of this beautiful train station -"Checheng".And also try their famous wooden meal box and take the empty box as a souvenir.

Wow!! This is really a nice place to visit if you are in Nantou.. After visiting Jiji, we came here during our trip to Taiwan this Nov.. the weather was lovely and the scenery was even nicer..
There are a lot of trains and tracks to take photos for those who love railway..
There is also a wood museum as it used to be a lumber place..
Best of all, everything is FREE!!!
there are also shops selling food and stuff for those who need their shopping fix.. haha..
NOTE : Near the wood museum, there is a cart selling drinks.. try their "OLD FASHIONED Winter Melon Drink with Lemon"... it is heavenly!!!
Overall a very highly recommended place to spend a day..
PS 2 : if you want, go Jiji first then here.. else you will feel Jiji is boring,. skip Shueili.. see my other reviews for reason..
