Neighborhood: Ruifan District
With its air of historical heritage, Shuijinjiu (ShueiNanDong, Jingguashi, Jiufen) used to be prosperous and glamorous due to mining. Although its magnificent semblance no longer exists, the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere has persisted. With a wave to the age of the gold rush, one can still see a glimpse of its glorious past through the Golden Waterfall. Gazing at the ShueiNanDong Remains of the 13 Levels, it is like a beautiful palace that was deserted, earning it the name of “Potala Palace of the Mountain Mines”. Probing forward to the mouth of the river is the considerably distinguished Yinyang Sea, with its half gold half bluish green spectacle inspiring countless imaginations of romance. Walking along the streets of the meandering old streets of Jiufen and tasting the various kinds of authentic eateries is the love of tourists. Stepping into the Golden Museum, one can glimpse the historical traces of the mining industry culture, reminiscing of past glories from its museum, living quarters, and shrine remains. The unassuming mountain city of Houtong used to be a mining village. With the call of cat lovers, volunteer groups were established to create a friendly environment for cats and turned Houtong into a cat village for cat lovers.

    Really cool market and view
The town during our visit had a really cool haze with very limited visibility. There’s a market nearby with quite a long walk where you can get various goods, foods, and souvenirs to bring back home. Although this is a popular tourist place, the prices are still cheap as any other market.

    Great Place
Because we didn't have a lot of time in Taiwan we ended up here for a Saturday night. Busy, so busy. We caught the bus number 965 from right outside our hotel and it took us right to Jiufen, so easy. Lots of tasty food and some lovely views. It was starting to get busy on the Sunday by 11am even with the rain. Maybe during the week is not so crowded. Very pleased we had the night there.

Best place to visit in Taiwan
Spend hours here, it's excellent. I recommend going either in the morning 6 AM or the evening 5 PM because the afternoon is too hot and crowded. There is many things to do and many stalls. There are a lot of steps so wear your rubber shoes

    Great time
Many excellent places to shop and eat -- what a great way to spend an afternoon. It is crowded, so leave yourself some time to get around. Some of eateries have fantastic views while you're eating. So many little shops to explore. Don't forget your camera.

    Worth a visit
Nice little town in the hills to the East of Taipei. About 1200 TD$ taxi ride from Taipei 101. Alleyways and many (food) stalls, hostels with great views over the Pacific. Was there during typhoon Khanun so many restaurants were closed due to windy / rainy conditions. The positive was there were few tourists. At end of the Jiufen old street on your right there’s a recommendable place called Shanghai something, a 3 story building with good food selection and some great views.

    Brave the weekend crowds…
…because this is an amazing place, like something from a story. Wandering round the main Street is fun but exploring above the crowds and going off the main track is even better. It’s an amazing place to visit and ticks lots of boxes for an afternoon trip from Taipei!

    Cute little town.
Our driver dropped us off a the top and agreed to meet us at the bottom after we visited all the shops. This was a godsend. Lots of booths with everything from fish ball soup to spicy duck blood (no, I didn’t make that one up). Very lively, narrow alleys, uneven roads and a cool ocarina shop. What’s not to love.

    Very pretty but so busy!
This was just as you imagined when you see it in photographs. Very pretty. Like stepping back in time. Picturesque. My main issue was how busy it was with all the tourists and stalls. Whilst this added to the atmosphere, it was difficult to fully appreciate the setting. I would say when you go to avoid peak times. My guess is anytime is peak. Probably avoid weekends. Walk, explore, get a bite to eat or a drink and definitely visit one of the teahouses.

Many foods to try- bring cash
Yes it’s busy and crowded. But once you know to expect it, the rest of the experience is enjoyable. We started at the magic shop outside the old street. Many of the vendors don’t take card so bring extra cash. We loved the variety of ceramic ocarinas. The owner of the shop demonstrated how to play the cat ocarina we bought. Such a nice person!

    Prepare to walk plenty
Prepare to walk. Better to start at the Jiufen Old Road at the top beside 7-Eleven. Ask the driver to bring you to the top first and meet you at the bottom of the stairs in about 90-120 minutes. Plenty of shops along the way. Food items, small restaurants, souvenir items, tea sets and a lot more.

Amazing views in the sunset. Beautiful streets, full of tiny, traditional shops and food markets. A bit crowded, try to avoid saturday evenings. An interesting Temple worth visiting too.

We visit here 30 years before, and now visit again. Wonder that it keep so well ! About the same, it means "OLD" - tradition.
Maybe here always raining, so have a blue mood. Most of the shops close about 7:00 p.m.

I really like the rows of shops which range from cute souvenirs to tasty goodies. I would say definitely worth a visit but avoid if you have young kids or elderly as you have to fought through crowds to get to places. The path is not all flat and even so might not be very safe for old folks and young kids. There are also tour groups which really choke up the whole walk ways which is pretty frustrating. All in all, I think it is worth a visit but have to be patient with crowds.

Great experience! Lots of souvenirs and snacks. Stocked up on gifts for people back home and stuffed myself on sweets. Very crowded though. I highly recommend the ocarina shop!

If you enjoy being pushed along a tiny street by a flowing tide of jostling, shouting American tourists, past shop after shop of overpriced tourist tat (fake Studio Ghibli stuff, dry pineapple cakes) that costs twice what it costs in Taipei, then this might be for you.

I couldn’t wait to get away. Especially when I saw the “famous” tea shops were charging £10 for a cuppa.

The worst, most fake, most depressing place we went in Taiwan.

Wonderful exploration of an old street of an old mining town. Quaint shops and tea houses. Great of local street food. Highlight was Braised Beef Noodle and Taro dessert. Can be very crowded.
