Our friends joined us on Day 2 of our trip. We were a group of 11 including a 2yr old boy. There was no way we could go to the more familiar Shifen, not with our car caravan.
So glad our guide suggested this sleeper of a town nearby. We were able to fly our lanterns without much hassle. And had our sumptuous lunch prepared to order for our group. Our favorite was the squid and the chicken (cooked like the Hainanese way). Since we occupied almost the entire place, the chef gave us food for free - tofu and the chicken dish was free by the way.
Our group enjoyed walking around and chanced upon a group of toddlers trick-or-treating. I guess Halloween has become really universal.

A small town and less busy, Jingtong is popular with a lover's bridge nearby the station and a Lantern Shaped Police Station. There's also a shop that sells bamboo for well wishers to make their wishes. Quite a sight different from other towns along Pingxi Railway Line.

Nice and quiet exploring this area which has a train station, coal mine transport site.
Less commercial than the other popular location like Jinfen.
Load of good photo shooting spot due to a famous Taiwanese movie.
The train service can take you to Shifen, but it is hourly service.
Spend only one hour is fair enough.

The town seems to exist to fly sky lanterns. There is not much else going on there except for the rail line. There are throngs of people, brought by travel agencies, who build, add messages and fly sky lanterns. It is a fun time but flames out fairly quickly.

Picked Jintong after reading about the wooden railway station. It is somewhat similar to Shifen but much lesser crowd. No sky lantern here but a lot of bamboo for wishing. Lesser food stalls as well but I prefer the atmosphere here.

We took the train from Shifen to Jingtong (ride was normal, nothing special). Arrived in Jingtong in the late evening as we were to catch our ride back to Taipei. Pleasantly surprised to see that the police station facade (shaped as a sky lantern) had sky lantern projections. Not too sure if this happens during the day but i do not think it merits a special trip here just for that. Most shops and stalls were closed as we visited on a weekday.
