A historic building, an excellent museum
Beitou is to Taipei City what Bath is to London. Of course the scale of Beitou is much smaller, and the history is much shorter. Built in 1913, this building was the largest and most gorgeous public bathhouse in Southeast Asia at that time. Covering an area of about 700 square meters, It is a beautiful two-story building with Japanese-Western architecture style. The first floor comprises two baths and the second floor is a wooden rest area. It was almost abandoned after the WWII, and once was planned to be demolished and converted into a cable car station. In 1994, thanks to the hard work of several native-loving teachers from Beitou Elementary School and an architecture graduate student, it was survived and preserved. The building is currently approved as a historic site by Taipei City. The building and garden were transformed into a museum displaying the history and culture of Beitou. The building has been brilliantly renovated and the museum is very well run. Many volunteers are on site providing outstanding service. However, my personal opinion is that some areas may be overly decorated, such as the large bath on the first floor. It would be better if it could be restored to its original appearance.

    Lovely little free museum
Right Next to the fantastic public library. Lovely old bath building; I learned a lot about Beitou. I wouldn’t make a special trip for this, but it’s worth stopping in if you are in Beitou Hot Springs area. not to be confused with the Beitou museum— 2 different museums

Complete your trip with a visit to this museum!
The museum is well kept despite being a historical building. I like the central area in the building with tatami mats where we can rest while admiring the view from the balcony. Don't miss the chance to go through the interactive videos on the history of hot spring resorts.

This Victorian style building of red brick and white stucco is one of Beitou's most significant heritage buildings. It was originally a public bath house, Taiwan's first. The Romanesque pool and columns date from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945) and have now been restored to their former glory. Many intriguing artifacts and information displays provide an insight into Beitou's glory days.

The Beitou (or Peitou) Hot Springs area is about 30 minutes from the Taipei Main Station MRT (subway). The subway is fast and efficient and probably the best way to get to the hot springs area. As soon as you're out of the MRT station, you could see and smell the sulfuric mist in the air. It's not a strong odor but gets stronger as you get closer to the source which is called "Hell's Valley" in English. It's about 15 minute walk from the station and the entrance fee to the park-like area is free. You can see and definately smell the water ibubbling up from the still active volcano below that heats up the water, which at times reaches boiling point. To get to the park, just follow the stream that flows through the Beitou Hot Springs Park to the entrance of the Hell's Valley. Along the way up, there is the public hot springs which is an outdoor hot springs. It's not big and it's open to everyone. You have three pool areas with cascading water from the top (hottest) to the lowest pool (warm). The cost (when I went in Aug 2007) was 80 Taiwanese dollar (about US$3). There is a locker area where you can put your belongings and a shower stall area which also converts into dressing area. You need to have your swimsuit to enter the water.

For the price you pay, it's worth every penny. Then again, I only paid $3. But highly recommend to just get a feel of hot springs experience. However, if you're looking for something a bit more luxurious and relxing, there are many hot springs hotels surrounding the park.

I didn't have the time to visit the museum but I heard it's a nice way to get an overview of the area and how it came about. It's a small wooden building on the way up to the Hell's Valley.

In total, I spent about 4 hours in the area. Probably don't need longer time unless you're visiting the hotels (spas) nearby.

Very accessible via MTR-Ximbeitou. The Museum used to be one of the hotel during the Japanese era featuring the Beitou Hot Spring. More on historical visit. The museum shows how the hotspring evolved from hotel to what it is now today. Note that you will use the dedicated slippers upon entry. No entrance fee.

A quaint, open air museum that was actually a little boring IMO. You can visit if you’re interested in the history of hot springs.

A sign was posted at the XinBeitou Station stating that the Beitou Hot Springs Museum is closed for renovations from from Sep04, 2017 to Oct26, 2018. From the outside, it looks like major reno. We'll have to come back after Oct 2018 for a visit.
