The area
Neighborhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history. The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

Not far from Old Street is Anping Sword-Lion Square. This is a delightful little shopping area away from the crowd and noise of Old Street. The shops here are orderly and offer a variety of interesting products for sale. We spent quite some time sampling fruit drinks and my friends deciding to purchase a number of bottles were able to barter down the price.Take out your camera for photos of the courtyard, assorted decoration and even of you sitting on a cement reproduction of the Chinese zodiac of your birth year.

We must have been too early for things to be open (noon) and the central fountain is sort of small. It is a place to sit on the unused stage in the shade if you're hot and want to drink something from the vending machine. It was clean and had wide aisles between vendors.

This is a small square off Anping Old Street. The highlights are the sword lions, which comes in Male and Female version. Try to identify them.

In the square, there are many small shops selling souvenirs and artefacts. Interesting to look at.

Quite a peaceful area too. Away from the hustle and bustle of the old street.

Strolling the area was interesting, especially viewing the very old houses. Exploring down narrow alleyways was both exciting and fruitful.

It was interesting walking the residential streets of the old neighbourhood and looking for the lions with a sword.

We had a good stroll around the small residential alleys and an interesting treasure hunt for the sword lions. The host of our hostel gave us a map of the area that indicated the exact locations of the sword lions. Highly recommend visitors to get one of these maps from their accommodation or the tourist information centre at Anping, which is just a few minutes' walk from the sword lion square.
