Our tour guide booked Alishan Gor which is the hotel nearest to zhaoping station. That is the train we need to board at 6 am to go to the Zhushan station for the sunrise. We went to the station at 530 am and found out it has not even opened yet. Haha we are the first who bought the ticket but when the train came from Alishan station it was packed. When we reached the observatory the sky was already bright but the sun was st the other side of the mountain waiting to see us. We walked quite a bit to the ogasawara watch tower (aliyuan)upslope and down slope. But I can assure you it is truly worthwhile. When the sun finally rise it was just unexpectedly awesome. It is the purpose we came to Taiwan this time to see the sunrise and we can amazed by its view. Marvellous view but you can't see the sun directly for long or one may get blind I believe. It is painful. So everyone took selfies to capture the spectacular view. We stayed till around 7 something to catch the last train back to Zhaoping station. There are only 2 services offered in the early morning to return before the usual routine of train services starting at 9 am.
It is really an eye opener for mr as I always see sunrise at sea. This is the first time I see from a mountain. Must go.

Woke up around 5 and thought we should be the early bird #1, by the time we got to the train station, there were a long line of people ahead of us. We took the so called forest train to Zhushan station and walked to Xiao Ali Yuan (about 10 min walk) to wait for the sunrise. The valley is full of sea cloud with a fabulous view. Hundreds of people were waiting for the sunrise in many groups. The sun rose at 6:57 am as the forecast which is a marvelous scene and definitely worthy to come if you are at Alishan.

When visiting Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, viewing the sunrise is a must-do activity.
You have to purchase the train ticket that brings you from Alishan Station to Zhushan Station, a day in advance starting at 2 pm; you can't purchase it any earlier. You'd also have to check at the train station, after 4 pm, the estimated time of sunrise so that you know how early to come to the train station.
In the morning, by the time we arrived at the train station at 4:45 am, there was already a long line waiting to board the train. We eventually managed to squeeze into one of the cars, standing just next to the train door. This turned out to be a blessing, as we could arrive at the sunrise viewing platform before the crowd and secured a good viewing spot.
Your sunrise experience is affected by the weather; if it's cloudy or if it rains, you won't get to see the sunrise. We were glad that the sky was clear when we were there, which gave us a good view.
There are two places you could view the sunrise: you could view it here, which is just a short walk from the Zhushan Train Station, or you could take a long walk to the Ogasawara Mountain Watchtower (小笠原山觀景台 Xiaoliyuanshan Lookout). Our family chose to stay here.
The wait for sunrise was filled with anticipation. It was cold, and there was not much else to do. Fortunately, a guide (probably employed by the Forest Recreation Area) was giving a rather interesting commentary about the area, so that took our mind off the wait.
The sun rose slightly earlier than the estimated time provided at the train station. The view was spectacular. Most people were trying to capture the moment either on their cell phone or on camera.
We really enjoyed our time here!
The only downside was the cigarette smoke by inconsiderate smokers! The morning air was fresh until those cigarette smoke marred it! Perhaps the authority should make this place a smoke-free area.
