- HROxonOxford, United Kingdom942 contributionsEnjoyed the riverside walking pathWe opted to park on the road side free car park and take the 3.5km walk up the river (rather than take the road the whole way to the falls). Riverside path was icy and slippy but we managed it in trainers with care. Some rock clambering required. With the ice it took over an hour from the car park to the waterfall but under an hour on the way back as some of the ice had melted. We enjoyed the walk up the river as much as Bruarfoss itself where there is a bridge over the river to take photos.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 14, 2024
- Justin RLino Lakes, Minnesota372 contributionsDon't miss this one the Golden CircleThis isn't the biggest waterfall but the blue color and the unique shape make this waterfall a must-visit. The road to get to it is quite a rough dirt road. While a 4x4 isn't required, I would not have felt good about driving a regular car to get there (many people do though). From the parking lot it's a short walk to the bridge over the waterfall.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 10, 2024
- iplayaziCalgary, Canada291 contributionsStunning waterfall, without the crowdsThis stunning blue waterfall was a highlight of our drive around the golden circle. The short gravel road to the parking lot leaves just a short walk to the falls. And, no tour buses, large groups or crowds to contend with.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 27, 2024

Next time i Will take the path along the foss, We just didn’t have the time as we came at dusk. Unfortunately I forgot to take my Black backpack with me when We left. It is on the ledt bank og the Foss. If someone locates it, please help me ensure the backpack and its content does not end up in nature. If possible contact me +45 61712673. - Chad2014Gainesville, Florida245 contributionsBeautiful colorsThis is not so much a big waterfall as a crevice in the middle of a river that allows for water to fall a short distance into it and create a deeper pool which allows for a beautiful sky blue color. Because this is so unique compared to the other waterfalls that I saw in Iceland and because it is such a short walk from the parking lot I would recommend it. At the same time I would not call this a "must see" in Iceland.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 16, 2024

Easy 2 mile hike there and back. Took our family of 5 75 minutes. Muddy in spots. Parking is next to the road by the river. Take the rocked trail to the right at the start. Trailed marked by yellow tape on trees. The waterfall is phenomenal to see, cutting through large boulders. The color of the water is so blue. Sit and spend some time enjoying the view.

We started our hike after a rainy morning. At first, the path was okay but as soon as the path became smaller in between the trees the path also became very muddy.
While holding on to the trees and stepping carefully we eventually came to a waterfall named Hlauptungufoss. Please note that this is not the Bruarfoss yet. For that, you have to continue your hike alongside the water. A little bit further you will come by Midfoss, a small but still a nice waterfall. Later you will find a bridge and finally get to the Bruarfoss. And OMG It was MAGICAL!!!
The ice blue water coming down spread from different paths.
It was definitely worth the hike and worth the muddy feet.

A lesser known waterfall within the golden circle that is best accessed from the small carpark at the junction of roads 355 & 37.
A small carpark from where you start a 3.5km hike alongside the river. Muddy in places with plenty of rocks and roots to contend with the further you walk.
You pass 2 smaller waterfalls called Hlauptungufoss and Midfoss on route to Bruarfoss. The water is so clear, cold, and mesmerising Blue in colour that it will blow your mind!
Some beautiful photo opportunities await you on your adventure.
Bruarfoss, although tiny compared to Gullfoss is some ways more beautiful. It's multiple small streams of glacier water dance in the sunlight as they converge into the powerful and noisy main fall.
A bridge over the fall is a good yet popular place to grab a picture, however if you cross the bridge, turn left and then walk back down under the bridge (with caution of course), you can get a picture without the crowds 👍.
One of the best sights of our trip to Iceland and free of course.

The road was bumpy, but short and the view was well worth it. We did the entire Ring Road and saw many waterfalls. There are bigger and more powerful falls, but this small falls was so blue and beautiful. It was our favorite.

We saw the pictures before we came but nothing beats the real thing. It is smaller than we thought but still beautiful. Note there’s a new parking lot (fee required) that gets you within 5 mins of the falls.

A beautiful waterfall. Lovely walk and not as busy as nearby attractions.
Parking here can be problematic as it gets busy and the car park is only small. The walk starts pretty easy before getting muddy. You’ll fairly quickly get to the first waterfall which is lovely and because it was a nice day it had a lovely rainbow in the falls. After this you follow the river on a flat east to walk path. You’ll get to the second waterfall and finally you’ll reach bruarfoss. It took us a couple of hours but I was photographing everything.
If you do this on a sunny day it’s easy to get great photographs. When we got to bruarfoss we spent maybe an hour there and there was never more than 15 other people there

Depending on the time of year you do this walk, it can probably be nice and dry or, in March (and I suspect April) incredibly muddy!
The first part of the walk is fine, it's on a gravel trail. Once you get to the bit where you have to cross the steam, it gets messy!
My first tip would be to wear decent hiking boots, don't wear your nice shoes as they will get ruined. The mud was ankle deep, I suspect it could get deeper as the ground was still partly frozen.
There is no way around the muddy stretch and it lasts all the way until you reach the river.
Tip number 2 is to take a walking pole if you have one as mud is very slippery!
Tip 3 is to do the walk in the morning and pray the ground is still frozen as when the sun comes out it will get muddier!
It's a great walk up to the falls, once you get to the river and start walking towards the falls it is less muddy although there are still patches that you will have to wade through. It's a fast flowing river so be careful if you have small children.
We enjoyed the walk as we had hiking boots but I felt sorry for some people unprepared for the the mud!

This is definitely a sight to see. You get to see three sets of waterfalls on this 45 min walk into Bruarfoss. We walked very quickly from the falls to where the parking is and it was a solid 40min. You have to make sure to budget the amount of time - one way-.
It was worth it in my opinion since the journey is part of the experience!

Are there any F-Roads to get here? Trying to find out if i need a 4x4 or not for my trip next may.

Hi, thinking to do this hike with 3 year old kid. Can anyone suggest which one is the closest parking other than official parking from which it takes only 10 mins to reach the waterfall? Read in many reviews they hiked from private property which is the easiest trail but not able to find in Google maps. Please help.
Thanks in advance 😊
Written January 31, 2020
You definitely do NOT want to try to cross private property to get to the top of the trail to see Brúarfoss. The hike will be long (2.5 km each way) from the parking lot, for a three year old, but there are some smaller falls along the way.

Hello!
Is this a doable hike in late November if we hit the trail right when the sun comes up? If not does anyone have another suggestion? Thanks in advance?
Written November 12, 2019
The hike took me about 2 and a half hours in good weather. You should expect to take a bit longer if the trail is muddy. Check the weather report and be prepared. Enjoy.

Bonjour,
Pouvez-vous m'indiquer les coordonnées du parking officiel pour se rendre aux chutes Bruarfoss ou des informations complémentaires pour le trouver.
Merci d'avance. Cordialement.

Hello,
I am going to Iceland in 2 weeks. I read lot of article about "how to reach Bruarfoss" but still not sure how to go there from Reykjavik.

We used WAZE as our navigator. We typed in Bruarfoss and it took us to the parking lot just after the bridge. From there we followed the directions on the internet. The first half of the trail is easy to navigate. But when you get almost halfway the trail is blocked with a big sign saying no trespassing and private property. From there the trail goes tot he right and up a small hill then cross country until you come out on a road. Make a left on the gravel road and follow it for about 3/4 of a mile. Then follow the small wooden signs that direct you back into the path thru thick brush and next to the creek again. Then up to the waterfall. It is worth the trouble. The falls are incredible because of the color of the water. Takes 45-60 minutes.

Did you take a tour of the golden circle or go by car
Is it difficult or easy.
Written August 9, 2018
We rented a car and it was the best decision. All roads are easily navigational. The tours are busses packed full of people. Renting a car makes you able to make random stops along the way. Bruarfoss may not be on a tour as it’s a lesser known waterfall. Put it on your itinerary! The hike is easy and it’s worth it!

where did u exactly park? I read over 100 reviews, all a bit different, if u are willing to share, appreciate, i have 3 kids, don't think we will be able to do the official route, if I were single, i will not mind. thank you.
Written August 4, 2018
We parked at the lot near 355 and 37. I believe this was the official lot and the correct way to hike it up until recently. I cannot comment on the new closures.

When u mentioned route #36, do u really mean #37? on the map there's 37 close to Bruarfoss, but not 36.

Hi... Has anyone been in February? What's it like in Feb?
Thanks.

The waterfall is not closed. The route neither though it is slightly obstructed but a lot of tourists go anyway. We did too and loved it.
