Kariotahi beach just out pass Waiuku 7 to 8 km toward the beach.
Scenery is beautiful, landscape is awesome, waves are strong and
beach is long and great, good for horse riding, quad biking and walking
your dog (s). Landscape is also very beautiful.

This beach stunning and although black sand is unusual it is amazing. Also lovely restaurant (can’t remember the name) food served on hot stones, well worth a visit.

We are very lucky to live so close to this beautiful west coast black sand beach. There are many things that you can do out here like surfing, paragliding, hang gliding, land yachting, and surf casting fishing kite fishing and torpedo fishing or of couse you can just sit back at Agave Restaurant with a cold one and enjoy the view.

Castaways accommodation is on the cliffs just above the restaurant. In the not so far off future there is going to be a massive swing built for an adrenaline rush you would never have experienced. Visit it enjoy it and leave only your footprint. You wont regret visiting here.

A clean, pristine beach with plenty of space to ride your horse, wheel around on your quad / bike , picnic , go for a romantic stroll or just have fun in the waves. Black sandy beach with a sparkle.
A must if you are visiting Waiuku or just want some fun in the sun

Great black sand beach which can get terrifically hot on the feet during a summers day. This beach is also legal road so motor vehicles as well as horses use it, if you go here to swim, make sure you do so in the life guard patroled area. This is a notorious west coast surf beach that is exciting to play at with care.

Wild, rural and very beautiful beach! There was an ice cream truck here the sunday we went here, but otherwise quite deserted, rugged and massively gourgeous peace of nature!

You can't visit NZ without going to one of the West coast beaches. The sand is very heavy in Iron and as such, the beaches are black. Be careful walking on it on a hot day, as the sand does heat up a lot!!

Black sand is something I've never experienced before...I'm visiting from England and found this beach so stunning and interesting.
I'm an au pair at the moment and we took the kids and dogs there for something different to do, I'd probably not take them again as there were a few idiots on dirt bikes knocking around and showing off. That should be more closely monitored as I thought it quite dangerous.
Other than that it was an amazing beach...and a beautiful drive to get there too!

Like the others said, usual westie beach. Descent surf, long flat black sand beach you can drive onto or play games. Don't recommend for weak swimmers.
Awesome beach for group of mates.

I first went to Kariotahe Beach in the early 1990's after family members moved to Waiuku, the closest town to the beach. The drive from the town was on a wandering narrow 2 lane road ending just past a burned out car body rusting where it had burned. The road sloed down to the beach and I followed the others already there and parked on the beach.
Black sand takes a little getting used to the first time you lie on it or even when you first spread your towel, things that are black in most people's experience is dirty, the sand wasn't!
The beach had a building shared by the local surfers club and a civic lifeguard service and that was it, zero amenities.
Walking along the beach as the tide receded I first noticed a phenomenon of a black sane beach. As a wave receded leaving a thin film of water on the sand, it became a mirror and reflected the azure blue of the sky above along with the white clouds, beautiful and different.
The sea is according to the posted warning subject to under tow and not really suitable for swimming unless you are experienced.
Like most beaches I have visited in my life, I am content to sit in the sun on the beach and either read or people watch, this I did at Kariotahe.
