Dated about 1553 years, these famous Mayan pyramids are located an hour and a half from Merida. Chichen Itza's name derives from the Mayan words "Chi" (mouth), "Chen" (well), "Itza" (the name of the people of this region). The site is divided into three areas, the Northern group (distinctly Toltec) the Core group (early period) and a third group known as the Old Chichen. guided tour

Despiste hot, it is a place you must visit, buy souvenirs inside Chichen Itza, are cheaper that out side.

The main pyramid is an impressive site - and if you enjoy touring archaeological sites - this one is worth visiting. The site itself is flat - which makes it easier than some sites in the Yucatan to tour. However, there isn't a lot of...More

The ruins are spectacular, try to be there early morning or late afternoon to avoid the hot sun, bring plenty of water and be prepared to walk a bit. Lots of venders selling crafts, always negociate the prices, they always start high and will come...More

Chichen Itza is well worth the 2+ hour drive from Playa del Carmen. Ours was an organised tour with guide. Our English guide did a great job giving us an insight of the Mayan way back then, their beliefs, their faith in the planets, etc....More

I'm running out of superlatives with the archaeological sites we visited in Mexico & Guatemala. I think this pyramid is the most striking because it appears to stand alone but there is a lot to see over a very large site. It was a cold...More

Really enjoyed our morning here! This is an amazing place. We have visited many of the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan but saved this one for last. We did not have a guide but I would recommend it if this is your first visit to...More

The historical value of the visit is great. However, you need to be immune to vendors constant calling out for your attention and using instruments that supposedly sound like leopards.

A must see! Get there early and steel yourself against the vendors. It is truly one of the wonders of the world!!!

Very hot! No shade. Wear a hat and maybe long sleeves. There are lanes and lanes of souvenir stalls - ok if you want cheap bits and pieces to take home for kids pressies but nothing really nice, I thought. I think it's a good...More
