- Mark D1 contributionBeautiful beach, lots to see, and do, Kata is a gemThis is one of the nicest beaches in Phuket. Kata is a nice small town not so small that there’s nothing to do half the year you can go surfing and boogie boarding in the other half the year the water smooth enough that you can go snorkeling. There’s a coral reef, not too far out that you can swim to, there’s food within walking distance and stores to buy umbrellas, bikinis or whatever you might need. Also, if you take a motorcycle, there’s Kata Noi ( means small in Thai.) it is also very nice just a little bit smaller and a little more secluded. There’s a lot to do around the area and a lot of nice scenic lookouts up in the hills.Visited August 2022Traveled with friendsWritten April 9, 2023
- Whamchick225 contributionsFab beachFab clean beach. Loads of stalls with street food. Really cheap. Lounger and parasol for 100 baht… about £2.50 a day. Lots of beach stuff to hire. Gorgeous beach.Visited May 2023Written May 18, 2023
- Mike MChristchurch, New Zealand267 contributionsBeautiful beach with room to relaxWe stayed at Kata Beach for 11 days from first week of August. There was a big Oil Spill off the coast of Thailand sometime late July, and on August 6th /7th some of it did eventually reach Phuket, including Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, pretty much the whole West Coast of Phuket. But by August 8th there was no sign of it, it had gone / been cleaned up. We were on the beach pretty much every day, and most people didn’t even notice, there were still heaps of people swimming, surfing etc every day. Kata is still a nicer, prettier, quieter beach than Patong, you can walk 100M along the beach and easily get away from the crowds. The waves at Kata are a little bigger than Patong, so better for surfing etc. 2 Loungers and an umbrella is 200 baht if you need them, and although shops are only 100 meters away, drinks, beers, ice- creams, snacks etc are easily obtained from the mobile vendors walking along the beach, all of whom are very polite and not pushy. We liked our stay here and will happily return !Visited August 2023Written August 22, 2023

To enjoy the beach comfortably, you can rent sunbeds for 100BHAT each, which is definitely worth the price. Although local vendors approach you while relaxing, they are polite and respectful when you decline their offers. Kata Beach is ideal for swimming and taking breathtaking photos for your Instagram feed. We also visited Karon Beach via Tuk Tuk, and though it was busy, it was still beautiful. However, I highly recommend Kata Beach for a more peaceful experience.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 2, 2023
- Graham CBrisbane Region, Australia98 contributionsA pleasant, relaxed beach resortWe recently had a nine-day holiday at Kata. We found it to be a pleasant, relaxed, yet vibrant place. The beach is pretty with clean white sand and clear water. Kata has plenty to do and is suitable for families with children. Local people go out of their way to make visitors welcome. We would certainly come again.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 5, 2023
- Leanne FSydney, Australia52 contributionsA stunning beachOne of the best beaches I have swam at. The water is crystal clear, perfect temperature and the waves change from day to day and in different spots so you can choose a very calm spot or more wavy. We also jet skied a couple of times and parasailed. Sunsets are amazing and the walk from end to end is very easy with either the option to walk along the beach or on the path at the top of the beach. Not too busy and so very pretty.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 2, 2023
- Ovidiu CBucharest, Romania73 contributionsHidden gem!Located 7 km from Patong Beach, between Karon and Rawai, it is the perfect location for relaxation. Quiet, not crowded, perfectly combines the forest with the beach. You can go to the beach directly on the sand, but there are also sunbeds with umbrellas that cost 200 baht (2 sunbeds and an umbrella).Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 2, 2023
- LeannieHanoi, Vietnam1,427 contributionsNice at sunsetPopped down to this beach to watch the sun going down. At that time of the evening it wasn't busy on the beach which was nice. There were a selection of long tail boats in the sea which looked nice against the sunset. The beach itself looked clean and nice sand to walk on. Look forward to returning during the day to experience the beach more.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 9, 2024
- 192CR37 contributionsPhuket Too crowded - PhiPhi islands touristy and crowdedWhile the beach was nice, it was so crowded. So many signs in Russian and so many tourists everywhere. 300 baht for an umbrella and w beach chairs is the going rate. Surprised so many Russians everywhere as it seems they have taken over. Tour to PhiPhi Islands also so crowded with speed boats everywhere. I read there are thousands visiting everyday with sewage going into the ocean as they don't have water treatment plants. Not interested in returning as there are other places instead of Phuket.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 10, 2024
- Shurley2 contributionsKataIt was very busy. The beach reminded me of costa brava where every bit of sand is occupied. There are people selling their wares and icecreams too. 200-300baht for loungers and brollys. The town itself has a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as food stalls. Very busy traffic and crazy scooter riders. We chose here as it is described as a quieter, family friendly part of phuket. Maybe at other times of the year, or just not now. We had a good time but not sure if i would rush backVisited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 13, 2024

Kata beach and accompanying Caron beach are quite nice. Great water temperature. But that is it.
The area has lost its Thainess - the food has been Russianized. I just left a restaurant where I ordered a Thai beef salad and there was nothing Thai about it - it had seafood sauce drizzled over it. I nearly cried.
Sitting on the beach you are surrounded by Russian people chain smoking without any regard for people around them. It is disgusting.
The Thai people need to make a living but foregoing all to chase the rubble has really saddened me.
This will be my last trip to Thailand. Tourism is ruining this part of Thailand. So saddened by this.
Food safety and cleanliness standards so lacking in Walking Street - yet everyone has a mobile phone with access to mobile phone with access to the internet, so food safety information readily available - yet cooked meats sit out for ages, uncooked meats sit out unrefrigerated or on ice before cooking. Ordered meat stored on ice only to watch the cook midway through cooking clean the bbq plate with a filthy steel bristle brush. I’m done. This country is too busy chasing baht to realise how poor the standards are and how their country is being trashed by all the waste and plastic to serve the uncaring, self absorbed tourists. I despair for this country.

Perfect meeting point if you are a russian speaker, because this is their hotspot. There is a chance you can meet your russian friend here. Its crowded and not worth it. There are plenty of alternatives elsewhere.

This might be a silly question, but coming in January as a solo traveller, love swimming in the sea, is it safe to leave basic belongings on the beach while i do that ?

From my observation, safety is not an issue, but considering big crowd of people, you never can be 100% sure. I recommend to walk to Kata Noi beach at 9.00, take the first row of sun bed and swim w.o. worry. You will see your belongings. As well, serving personal in Kata Noi looked to be much more nicer.

We are looking to visit with our 2 children at the end of May. They are keen to do water activities such as snorkelling, swimming and paddle boards. I have read that the sea is red flagged most days throughout the whole of the low season. Can anyone please advise? Obviously we will not swim if it’s not safe.

Kata beach is generally safe, and there are plenty of lifeguards about. But like most of Phuket, you do get regular thunderstorms, and when it is stormy the waves get bigger and the currents get stronger. When it gets dangerous the lifeguards put the red flags up. But sometimes it is only for a few hours, it really depends on the weather which can be quite changeable in May as it is the start of the rainy season. So, depending on how long you stay, you will probably get some calm sunny days and some rainy / stormy days.

Sorry I cannot help you. It’s something you need to do when there. Ask at your resort. I find it’s not as good tailoring as it used to be...

Hi, I'm staying in Kata Beach for 3 days. Is it OK to hire a scooter one day to visit the other beaches? I know how to drive a scooter but I don't have international drive license. But I was told Thailand doesn't accept international licenses at all. I will be in trouble if police stops me?

Alugar scooter na Tailândia é muito fácil mas ... aconselho a ler este guia da Word Nomads: na página 10 tem informação sobre isso mas, ler o guia todo é útil - é só procurar em travel-safety/southeast-asia/thailand

Hi! Is it easy to get a taxi from Kata Beach to Patong Beach at night? I'm staying in Kata Beach but I want to visit Patong Beach at night one day. Also, is there places in Kata where I can book day-trips to the islands? Or should I do this online?

Hi,
There are plenty of taxis and tuk-tuk to go between kata, karon and patong at night. We used Grab to book in-phuket transportation.
You can book day tours from kata beach from your hotel and various shops along tbe way to beach or in restaurants. we booked tours where we hired our bike.

There's a large supermarket on the main road out the back (not beach front), half way to Karon
