Not only rare birds flock to the Curonian Spit, this 98-kilometer strip is surrounded by continuously winded sand, creating a special landscape. Juodkrante has a viewing site on the Mount of Avino, which opens up one of the most beautiful Curonian Spit panoramas. It is...More

Climb the hill to get a good view of the birds. It is easy to see the cormorants in the trees because their poo has destroyed the foliage.

It is astonishing how nature can fail to find a balance and this massive cormorant colony demonstrates surprisingly how the acid bird droppings destroy the very pine trees the birds nest in. An ecological eyeopener. Steps lead up to a vantage point.

Sadly in August we were not treated to the sight of many birds, though you could see the results of all the bird poo in the ruined trees around the area.

Fascinating birds, and in the Nehrung it seems they have grown rather used to people. Ironically, in my country we eat these birds while eels are protected. In Lithuania, it seems things are the other way around. Here they protect the cormorants and eat the...More

Quite an experience. The scenery is really something different and the watching of the birds is somehow addictive.
