Last December, I took my first ever trip to the Rizal srhine in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. It was a very educational and relaxing walking tour that encompassed several different structures which included both preserved and restored buildings from National Hero Jose Rizal's residence and medical clinic while he lived in exile in Dapitan. I was unable to go to the Museum as it was closed for the day (30 November being a holiday, Bonifacio Day, ironically enough), but being able to visit the various spots around the compound was satisfying enough. With an animated and friendly volunteer giving us a tour, it was an even more pleasant experience.

We where traveling land trip back to Manila, this place is really part of the itinerary. We could only read this on history books during grade school. It was a great opportunity being able to visit the shrine with my family. We had fun touring around, seeing the huts of Rizal, his Casa Residencia, the century old tree, etc. for free, no charges. It was good that it has been preserve and is taken care of so that children and adults alike could visit and will have a chance to see the past especially Rizal’s life when he was in Dapitan.

The Rizal Shrine is 2.4 Km away from Downtown Dapitan. It opens at 8am and entrance is Free.
At the Shrine you will be given a Glimpse of Rizal's life in Dapitan. As a Farmer, a Doctor, a Writer, or just simple as a Husband, Brother and Son. A Replica of the house he stayed in can be seen there as well as his clinic, the stone where he wrote one of his poems, the huts where his patients stayed in, the Water Works he built.
Be sure not to miss the spot where Rizal left Dapitan for Manila.

Rizal's three-year exile in Talisay had made Zamboanga del Norte and Dapitan in particular become known to students in schools.Historians have made the place their mecca during December 30 memorial services for the national hero.
To lure more tourists, the national government made some improvement. But, in my opinion the contractors made a futile attempt at restoration work. Why?First, they built an artificial lagoon when there was no lagoon before. The Me Retiro rock is not part of the shrine but outside the perimeter on the foreshore area.During high tide it is just a boulder. But during low tide the rock appears heart-shaped thus also referred to as lovers' rock.Today the lagoon smells putrid because it has no outlet. The bed was rubberized by the contractor so the water would stay indefinitely, thus the bad odor.Second, the glass and concrete library is an anomaly. The books displayed in museum were not written in Talisay but somewhere in Europe. It should be displayed near the church or other areas not in an 1863 village of Rizal. Not all the native structures were restored including the original clinic. The contractor had reclaimed part of the foreshore area thus making the rock inside the park. The mini dam made by Rizal's students was not restored. The water smells bad.Another anomaly is the steel walkway around the Rizal's compound. It is not well maintained and could be dangerous to kids. I suggest the historical agency should make restorative work serious and should replicate the structures during the hero's exile.
There are no decent restaurants in Dapitan which make tourists to return immediately to Dipolog for their lunch or dinner.

Jose P. Rizal was exiled in Dapitan.
The area where he stayed is historical.
His house, the place near the seashore...
You will get a feel on how he have spent his time on the late 1890s.
Dapitan is a beautiful municipality, but at that time or era, life could have been tough for DR. RIZAL as an exiled? exiled in his own country.
From Calamba Laguna to a western part in Mindanao.

Although the Museum was closed as it was a Monday that I dropped for a visit; the place is still worth the visit.
I enjoyed going through or re-visiting each structure that was modeled after the original structures that were around during the time of Rizal.
I found the public restroom’s concept a bright idea; however some upkeep may be needed to maintain cleanliness of the place.
The lagoon area near the big rock needs some cleaning; during that visit the lagoon emits a foul odor from the assorted stuff that got stuck in the lagoon and have started to decay.
The practice of “clean as you go” must further be promoted among tourists to keep the place clean.

Rizal sa dapitan - is a must place to visit in Dipolog. In here you will not pay any entrance fee (wished they did). There is a museum that closes 5pm everyday. So be sure to come early. In this museum you will be able to check rizal's old clothes, replica's of his letter and medical kits used during his time.
You can also see here his hobbies, family history meaning to say rizal really did exist and history is real for us Filipinos.
The place is huge - you have to walk inside to be able to experience all of the houses (rizal's house, his house for his hobbies, his house for his medical responsibility) etcetera. This whole compound is facing the sea, so expect a calming walk across the compound

A visit to Dipolog or Dapitan will be a waste of time if you neglect to visit the Rizal Shrine in Dapitan. It showcases the life and achievements of our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal while in exile. You see firsthand all his works, life style, inventions, contribution to society, and as a human being : as a husband and physician. His genius is very evident in the Nipa Hospital he built, the school, the water system even his home. Even if you are not in Dapitan every Pilipino should take the time and initiative to visit this historic place as an alternative to just visiting beaches and leisure places. This is a place I highly recommend to all.
