This is the stambol Gate which linked up to the lovely fortress about a mile up the road. Plenty of such gates and fortresses in this area but the vidin one is well preserved and looked after. Well worth a visit

The area inside Vidin's old walls now mostly looks depressing : communist apartment blocks ugly and many degrading, garbage, vast deserted areas and deserted buildings, incomprehensible building layout plan. There are also few exceptions and this gate is one them.

There are nine gates of the Vidin fortress - Kaleto. This one is the most important and spectacular. The name derives from the direction of the road leading to Istanbul - the capital of the empire.
