This is one of those imposing churches that offers a quiet place of reflection and much to see - beautiful architecture, sculptures and paintings. Coin operated lights add illumination. The organ sounds magnificent. We have been many times.

Like so much else in towns like Gengenbach, this is a fairy-tale building. Built before North America was discovered, it is still a working church. It's not Notre Dame, but it shouldn't be - it's a town church. Very nice to visit. Make sure to throw some Euro into the collection box, and help preserve gems like this.

I didn't go in the church on my first visit to Gengenbach. I corected that mistake on my laterst visit. What a beautiful church. After the town was destroyed by fire in 1689, the church was rebuilt and it has been rennovated a couple of times since.

The is church is very different to other churches. The paintings on the wall were a surprise. The pulpit has a sculptured story of the birth life and death of Jesus. It has a long history originally being built in the 1200's and rebuilt in the 1600's.

We wandered through this church during our self-guided walking tour through Gengenbach and were amazed at it's beauty and ornateness. There is so much colour and detailing throughout this church for such a small town. It is truly spectacular. Every inch of the walls and the ceiling are covered in beautiful frescoes to specify just one aspect of its beauty.
The highlight of our time here was listening to a young choir group from Costa Rica break out in song while they were sight-seeing here at the same time as we were. The acoustics in this church were amazing and the young group sounded absolutely fantastic - what a treat!!
If you are visiting here, also take some time to explore the beautiful exterior adjoining abbey area, complete with cloister and gardens.

Building of the current monastery church began in 1120 however the Benedictine monks have been here since the 8th Century. Besides from inspecting the impressive interior, also of interest is the herb garden originally planted by monks.

The Mr and I took a walking tour using a brochure and map we picked up at the tourist office. I highly recommend taking a peek in this beautiful church. I was raised Catholic and truly appreciate the beautiful architecture. Nobody does churches better than the Europeans. Having the organist playing was icing on the cake. I felt God's peaceful presence here!
