A wonderful, quaint little folk museum in a pretty town. We travelled to Gengenbach as a day trip whilst on holiday in Strasbourg, especially to visit the Narrenmuseum. It’s a very unique museum, with many masks and costumes and information documenting the annual festival. Everything is presented within the tower and when you get to the top, you can go around the outside balcony and enjoy fantastic views of the town and surrounding countryside. Highly recommended!

If you are in Gengenbach and wondering what to do, this should be on your list. The hours are somewhat limited, only open on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday (everyday during advent). See website for details.
Being from the states, we were familiar with Mardi Gras and carnival. This museum highlights the German celebration, and more specifically, the celebration in Gengenbach. The cost is a meager 2.5 euros for adults and less for kids. You will only need an hour or two (if you are taking your time) to go through the entire museum. Photography is allowed. All text is in German, but if you do not speak German, I think you will still enjoy browsing.
You begin by watching a looping film about carnival; bench seating is available here. The museum consists of 6-7 floors (tiny floors!) with a spiral staircase in the middle. If you have mobility issues, this is not a museum for you. Also not for small children unless you want to carry them. Don't miss the top floor where the door can be opened, and you can stand on the tower balcony for a fantastic 360-degree view of Gengenbach.

I would highly recommend a visit! It's a fascinating, and slightly creepy, tower filled with carnival costumes/dummies. There is a different display on each level and it just kept getting better and better. Once you reach the top, there is a nice view of the town.
Most of the photos here are of the wrong tower though... I've uploaded a photo of the correct tower! If you really want to visit this tower, make sure to check the limited opening hours (currently Wednesday pm, Saturday pm and Sunday). There is a small fee to enter (~5euro), but it is well worth it.

The viewpoint is spectacular. The views are amazing, both at day and night. There is a museum in the tower that makes it even more interesting.

One of my favorite museums anywhere. I went here 3 years ago and couldn't wait to see it again. I love the many masks that people have worn during Carnival. I saw some plain wood masks at a carving shop in Triberg - several hundred dollars each!

The Narrenmuseum is very interesting and definatly worth to visit. But the picture is not the Niggelturm, it is the Untertor or Kinzigtor. Interesting is, and nobody mentioned it, the Niggelturm is the tower where the criminals were hanged. Once I read that the "Armesuendergloeckle" , the bell which rang when there was an execution, was sold to Mokena, IIlinois.

The Mr and I wish we understood German. However even without it, we really enjoyed this small museum set in an old tower.
The costumes were fantastic! We loved the craftsmanship that went into the witch's mask, clothing, and shoes!
We spent a lovely 45 minutes here. Our €5 were well spent. Now we want to know more about this fascinating custom!

Understanding better the historic impact of carnival in Germany the Narrenmuseum Niggelturm should be visited better in summer, out of season, and you will find people explaining the story of witches who had been imprisoned in order to burn them later publicly in the ancient times of Gengenbach.

Large medieval tower that houses a strange collection of carnival masks and clothes.
The view from the top gives you a clear view of the town from above.

My third visit over the past 10 years. I thik they did some remodeling and added new masked figures. Also the top floor is more of a history of the town . But that's ok. It is such a fun museum

I picked up a copy of their flyer when I was there earlier in the year (also available online). It states:
"Opening times:
Our museum is open from April to October, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Sundays and holidays from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. During Advent, Monday to Saturday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Sundays from 12:00"
So it sounds like they're not open in November. Hopefully there is a day that suits you in October though!
