Centuries old tree grows as it wishes in the middle of the Shrine
Jun 2016
One of the most beautiful and quiet shrine on the islands of Oki. Despite being next to a road, the atmosphere there is traditional and peaceful.
An interesting detail is that the visitor can see the structure behind the main shrine, which is quite rare for this kind of architecture.
There's also a small museum in the house of the housekeepers, on the side.

The oldest shrine in Oki with the giant cedar aged 2000 yrs
Sep 2016 • Couples
This shrine is the oldest shrines in Oki island, and it built in 1793. There was the giant cedar which aged over 2000 years inside the shrine grounds. The prayers building had thick and large straw decoration. Behind the prayers building, there was the main building of the shrine.

Impressive Tree
Apr 2016 • Couples
The Tamawakasu shrine we eventually located in Saigo Port. We found the big and heavily-supported old sugi tree at the front of the shrine and it had undergone some recent damage from some falling limbs. The workmen were operating on it and we hoped they wouldn't wake the sleeping snake!

We circled around it and went up a path to the shrine. It consisted of two buildings, the rear one thatched and a small pond next to it.

Also there was a little museum nearby which looked deserted but we knocked and a lady appeared and let us through. She was keen on explaining things to us but we couldn’t understand. Seeing that we weren’t getting it, she then redoubled her efforts so we just had to smile and say thanks.

Go for the cedar
Jun 2014 • Friends
Although Oki has its own unique styles, the shrine itself was forgetable among the many I've been to throughout Japan. However, the giant cedar, like the others on the island, was a really exciting sight. I heard that there's a legend about a monstrous snake sleeping inside this tree, and when it wakes up the world will end.

Dec 2012 • Business
If you like shrines, then visit this one! It is the main shrine of all the 100 plus shrines in Oki. You will not be disappointed!
Take photos of the giant Japanese cedar tree too.
