Unfortunately no cranes were there in mid March. The feeding had stopped as there was enough food for the cranes to find by themselves.

Of the five crane areas we went to, this was the best. There were more cranes here, there were no fences between us and the cranes, there was plenty of parking spots, and the bathrooms were clean and convenient. We saw probably 180 cranes or...More

Just fantastic - wonderful views of the cranes without intruding in their space. There is also an info centre with plenty to learn about. To me it was a not to be missed experience

Watching several hundred Red-crowned Cranes jumping and dancing was simply spectacular. These are majestic birds, culturally significant to the Japanese. Being able to view so many, and at such close range, was one of the reasons we visited Japan in winter.

Maybe I was expecting too much, it was not as what I have expected in some photos. Just around 20 red-crowned cranes. Nothing fascinating.

I have been visiting Tsurui several times each winter for over 30 years. The sight of the cranes dancing on the snow covered fields each winter never fails to thrill. Combine visiting here with the nearby crane roost (best watched from the nearby bridge -...More

We were not sure if we would be in luck to see red-head cranes. Upon arriving at the sanctuary, we were escalated to see about more than 20 beautiful cranes in the near distant. There were about 10 photographers with their professional bazooka lens waiting...More

There are a few locations in eastern Hokkaido where you can view the Tancho (Red Head) Crane (Grus Japonesis) during their winter migration (www.japan-guide.com has an excellent writeup). I did not expect to see so many of them and at a relatively close distance. I...More
