I came here hoping to hike the gorge in the last weekend of March. Unfortunately even though many of the roads and paths were clear of snow the trails near Sounkyo were still thoroughly buried. My own bad planning perhaps, maybe next time - what...More

Beautiful nature :) love this place as you can see all the waterfall but sadly it all frozen. Strong wind and heavy snowing when I came here. The only waterfall that is not froze is Ryu sei. A wild deer came out from the forest,...More

October is a bit of a risky time to visit as the temperature can suddenly plummet - as it did during our 2 night stay - with freezing winds and rain. As the gorge is located in the mountains, be prepared that the weather here...More

來此搭纜車到山上眺望美景. Decided to take the cable to mountain top to look over the beautiful scene. A lot of nice Mountain View to fully explore the natural scene.

I went to Sounkyo as a day trip from Asahikawa on 1 August. Took the 8:35 limited express train to Kamikawa (rail pass) and then switched to bus to reach Sounkyo (870 yen). There are also direct buses from Asahikawa to Sounkyo (same bus but...More

We experienced a beautiful clear Autumn morning. There had been enough snow to provide beautiful scenery and both the gondola and chairlift were operating. It was midweek and sufficiently off-season that the crowds were limited. We also found the visitor centre very helpful.

I flew to sapporo and then drove there - there was still a fair bit of snow on the hiking tracks during July, so I'd expect it to be quite frozen in May. You may be able to hike it if you had full snow hiking gear.
