About
Knowsley Safari Park was opened to the public in July 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby. Then, the `safari park' concept of having visitors in cages (cars) and the animals roaming free based on the drive-through game reserves of East Africa was unique. In 1994, Edward Stanley, the 19th Earl, succeeded to the title. The estate being only 8 miles (13 km) from Liverpool city centre, Knowsley was the first safari park to be built close to a large city. In spite of some understandable apprehension about the possible problems associated with large numbers of animals (including lions) roaming about close to the city, the then County and District councils approved the proposals. In the first two years of opening, the route through Knowsley Safari Park consisted of a 3½ mile (5.6 km) drive, and the main attractions were lions, cheetahs, monkeys, giraffes, zebra, elephants and various antelopes. The park proved immensely popular, so in 1973 an extension, including a further 1½ miles (2.4km) of road, was built and opened. This allowed more animals to be added to the collection on display along the now 5-mile- (8 km) long route, including herds of camels, buffalo and white rhino as well as a group of tigers.A few modifications to the original design have had to be made for safety and display reasons. The tigers and lions are now displayed in enclosures within the game reserves, and the elephants have their own paddock in the walk around section at the end of the safari drive. We also have a car friendly route around the outside of the monkey jungle for visitors who do not wish to have a close encounter with our baboons. Knowsley Safari Park has become one of Merseyside's premier leisure attractions, winning several awards for tourism and it's animal husbandry.

Good day/ VIP LION EXPERIENCE RUBBISH

VIP LION EXPERIENCE
If you want to get ripped off and spend £200 to ride around in a mucky jeep then this experience is for you!
There is no prepping and helping the keepers you slide some metal to release the lions then drive round for 45 mins like everyone else complete waste of money and definitely wouldn’t recommend!
The park itself is great but save your money for the “VIP” bit

Couldn’t fault it!

A great experience. Lots of animals to see on the drive round as well as on the walk (staff were close by and monitoring the animal’s behaviour constantly for safety) Bird show. Seal lion show. Fun fair, play parks, train rides, face painting - some require additional payment but reasonable prices.
Several food venues to cater for a range of tastes.

Baboon experience was our highlight. We chose the route where you were likely to have baboons climbing on your car and they didn’t disappoint! You could also view the baboons from outside their enclosure which I recommend you do if you don’t want to risk damage to your car. There are signs up saying this could happen and we saw it happen (but luckily not on our car!) - rubber pulled off from round the windscreen, wipers pulled off and there were wing mirrors and alloys in the enclosure from previous visitors!
You can also pay an extra £6 per person to travel through the enclosure on the baboon bus.

A great day was had by all of us (family of four - two children aged 7 and 9)

Aug 2021 • Family
Arrived at 2 as had to pre book a slot the park was open till 7 so had plenty of time. Did the drive safari first which was brilliant didn't go through the baboons though. Afterwards went into the main park got the kids wristbands for the rides they were £10 each bit pricy maybe but they got their monies worth it was also valid for the train. Great sea lion show seen better but still good kids enjoyed it. Had a great day out and will definitely come again

Great day out for all the family
Aug 2021
We love going to Knowsley Safari Park and we have recently bought a yearly pass so we can visit more often. The last time we went i think we seen every single animal apart from the tortoise has this been moved now as the past few times we have been it hasnt been there? I do however wish the new outdoor food court opened earlier as 1pm seems a bit late for lunch especially with kids. Really enjoyable day though and would definitely recomend

Amazing fun day
Sep 2021 • Family
We had an amazing day at Knowsley Safari Park. We pre booked our tickets and was not waiting long before we entered the park. A lovely lady in the ticket office gave us map, and told us one or two safety tips, and told us we could drive around as many times as we liked. It took us about an hour to the drive around the safari, before we parked up to see the rest of the park. The bird of pray talk was amazing and funny, the the birds swooping though the crowd, it was very entertaining. The cafe was very reasonable priced, with hot and cold food. Plenty of clean toilets dotted about the park. We spent 5 and half hours at the park and drove round the safari twice. My 9 and 7 year old loved especially the baboons sat on out bonnet looking back at them. We will definitely be visiting the park again. The day was smiles all round.

Brilliant family day out
Sep 2021 • Family
Enjoyed a brilliant family day out here today. Recommend the baboon bus tour of the safari. Our tour guide Nick was great. Knew lots about all the animals so we got the most out of the safari. All the staff were really friendly. Park is kept very clean. Animals all look very well looked after. Fairground was a lot of fun and good value for money. Seal show was great. Plenty of food and drink outlets and toilets around the park. Wheel chair users are well looked after. Can’t wait to go back for the Enchanted Christmas event which is always brilliant.

Our 8 year old LOVED it!
Sep 2021
We got there early & it was quiet. We took this time to go on a couple of rides - including the train ride which was fun. It gave you the chance to see some of the animals from a different view point. We also walked around the foot safari. It was great seeing the giraffes, tigers, meerkats & birds of prey. We also liked the rope bridge & Lego animals.

We then stopped for lunch. The chips we bought were good with a sandwich brought from home. There are plenty of picnic benches where you can eat socially distanced.

Then we did the main bit - a drive round the park. By this time the park was too busy I felt. There are fewer animals than in the past it's true. It was still REALLY fun though having baboons on your car & seeing the huge male Lion. I do agree, that I did feel guilty seeing the baboons because there were too many cars all around them & all the exhaust fumes can't be good for them.

We went back to the main area after our drive for a ice-cream. It didn't feel Covid safe by then as it was too crowded so we headed home.

Our 8 year old loved it all though & given the past 18 months we've had that was well needed. Overall, a brilliant day out.

A good day out
Sep 2021 • Family
Visited with a 2 and 4 year old.

Pros - lots of different activities for a range of different age groups. Enough to keep the children entertained all day. Excellent sea lion demonstration. Fairly good value for money.

Cons - Drive Safari a little disappointing due to the lack of animals. Some animals looked in poor health and one baboon was carrying its dead baby around in its mouth. Drive Safari very slow to get around considering the low numbers of animals to see. The sea lion show was excellent but everyone was crammed in like sardines with hardly any social distancing.

Excellent Merecat experience
Aug 2021 • Family
Took my 11 year old daughter to a Merecat experience yesterday led by Nicola. My daughter was the only one booked in so we were able to have the full attention of both Nicola and the seven delightful merecats. She was shown their living quarters and introduced to them by name. Nicola was able to tell us about their individual personalities and quirks which was fascinating. My daughter was shown how to feed them with a mixture of bugs including live locusts and did this under Nicola’s expert guidance within their fantastic enclosure. Nicola was very knowledgable about this particular group of merecats and gave us lots of information and anecdotes, as well as information about merecats in general. She welcomed questions from my daughter and myself answering them clearly demonstrating her excellent knowledge of her job. It was a brilliant experience, well worth the cost and made very special by Nicola’s friendliness, enthusiasm and expertise.

Birthday celebration
Aug 2021
I had a special birthday in the lock down, my son and partner bought me a girraffe experience as part of my birthday gifts, I had to wait almost a year to book it, but I'm so glad I did, what a day I had the tour guide was absolutely fabulous her name was Nicky and her knowledge and experience was brilliant, she looked after me and made a fuss when she realised this day was special to me, I would highly recommend booking this experience not only to you get up close to the giraffe but you also have the day in the park, absolutely brilliant !!! Thanks again NICKY you made my day 👍❤❤
