Fantastic.... You don't need a guide

Brilliant snorkelling for varied coral, Turtles and fish. 100 pesos per person fee total  if staying on the island. An amazing must see island experience. Stay on the island if you can, to get the early morning or late afternoon snorkelling without the day trippers. Coral is stunning, with many varieties, colours and sizes. Also plenty of fish to see. The highlights are the various species of turtles, which can be found all over the beach area (we saw 7, 1 at over 1m long and 2 varieties), and not just the area bouyied off as the feeding sanctuary. They say you need a guide at 300 pp to see the turtles, but this is nonsense. We also saw a local guide encouraging some Chinese daytrippers to take selfies right next to the turtles. Just get in and swim around yourself.

Not worth your time & money!!
Dec 2019 • Couples
Went here today after noticing it was very well rated on tripadvisor; and both myself and my wife were thoroughly disappointed. First of all it’s expensive; we paid 2,300 pesos for both people there and back (6 on the first boat and just us 2 returning). I’m not entirely sure how the price the boats but don’t expect it to be very cheap. They also wanted to bring some locals back with us however we had to refuse and we were told we were paying extra as we were the only people returning (think they wanted a free ride at our expense). Then you pay 100 pesos each as an island fee; I was fine with this as I figure it’s money used to help the island and to preserve the marine life. We then rented snorkels at 100 pesos each (again fine with this). However we then went for a swim only to be shouted at by the beach attendant. Apparently we HAD to hire a guide at 300 pesos or else we couldn’t swim in that area. We didn’t need a guide as it isn’t a big area so we weren’t going to get lost, nor did we need someone to tell us about the fish or whatever they planned on doing. So we were ushered down the beach towards the dead coral where there aren’t many fish (at this point it was glaringly obvious why we needed a guide up the beach in the best spot...). We went for some food which was pretty appalling at 200 pesos a plate; chicken and rice (I have my doubts over the “chicken” as well). When we asked in the restaurant about going to the other side of the island, which we had read was the best, we were told it was closed and police would stop us going. This seemed odd; I couldn’t imagine police being on the island. So we went for a walk anyway. It wasn’t closed. There were no police. And it was actually decent for snorkelling. I think they told us this hoping we’d give us a pay the fee for a guide. All in all it was a pretty bad day. We were obviously disgruntled as we felt like they were just trying to rip us off whenever they could. Plus the snorkelling was average. We had a much much better experience in Moalboal where you could just rent or take your own equipment and then do as you please like a real adult. I’d advise giving it a miss sadly

Con island- lots of fees, and nothing special.

30 min ride to malatapay pier from dumaguete (not bad we hired a ped 400p) to get the boat over to the island its 3000p return. We paid 2300 return as we shared the boat with other travellers who were going one way and staying on the island. So £35.00 for us to get there and back approx 30 min each way.

When you land theres a coral/stone bay you can snorkel at, just one strip full of boats . Its 100p each for the entrance fee for the island, snorkel equipment 100p each. They dont tell you that you cant snorkel near the part were turtles are likely to be, unless you get a 'guide' Bearing in mind the reef is right on the beach, no idea why you would need a guide to snorkel in one particular area. But if you want to then it's another 300p for a guide, if you refuse they point you to the parts of the reef that are dead with nothing to see. They shout at you if you go to close to the 'guide only area' which is marked by buoys.

We had lunch at a shack, there was no menu so had no idea about price but presumed eating some local chicken and rice (the only option) would be cheap. We had 2 meals and a cocacola and it came to 450p!. The chicken was the worst struggled to even get any meat off the bones and fat and god knows what else.

So then we decided to head to the other side of the island near the marine sanctuary however we was told by locals it was closed off (so you paid to snorkel on their side of the island no doubt) but we decided to go anyway only to find out it wasnt closed, there was one part which was protected that you couldn't swim in, but still a large area where you could swim. We was the only people there, probably because they lie to the tourists saying its closed off buy 'military' 😂

It was a joke the whole thing to be honest, we saw a turtle and some nice fish but the place was nothing special at all, nothing like the magical island that is advertised.

I would definitely be back here. An amazing marine reserve sanctuary! Good for snorkeling and diving. So many beautiful sea creatures especially the turtles. Next time i will learn how to dive to have more time underwater and explore the beauty undersea. You would wish that you live here for eternity. Very priceless!

See some turtles and enjoy the beauty of a hidden jem.

What a cool little island! It may not seem worth the trek, but it truly is to see this amazing beauty. The Sea life is awesome - lots of turtles and the people are so friendly; it did not even feel very touristy which I really appreciated.

Amazing place for snorkeling
Nov 2018
My landlubber ways are no match to the allure of Apo Island's reef just a few steps away from the beach. This is a great place to finally learn snorkeling and have a personal encounter with sea turtles. Great props to the community for organizing themselves and making sure that they strike the right balance between protecting the island's natural riches and harnessing opportunities for tourism. Would love to go back and experience other activities on the island.

A few cons, though: prepare cash for overpriced homecooked meals offered when you reserve tables by the beach, and communal toilets are not as spic and span as they should be.

Nice sea view but too much extra cost
Oct 2019 • Solo
Nice sea view but too much extra cost.
Entrance fee 100 pesos per person.
Snorkeling Guide fee mandatory for 300 pesos even if you don’t need.
Table cost 300 pesos extra even if you have lunch in the restaurant. And what makes me angry is that they tell me to pay the table cost just I finish the lunch. Why don’t before I use the table?
Diving cost is 3500 pesos.
Lunch is not bad and reasonable price for 200 pesos per person.

Best place for snorkeling
Nov 2018
We've been here two years ago and for me it was my first snorkeling experience. snorkeling it's allowed only if you hire a guide and will provide best equipment. I had the best guide, he had patience with beginners like me and help us to enjoy our time there. We recommend to hire a guide because his job is to protect coral reef (which is recovering after the typhoon Haiyan) and sea turtle. also we recommend to spend some time in the village, it's amazing and very peaceful

pawikan encounter
Aug 2019
Boat rental cost 3,500 (i prefer you to look for joiners) entrace fee 100; life vest rental 100; tour guide for pawikan encouter 300; snorkeling gear 100. Better to bring your own food and bottled water coz there is no so much food in the island. Advisable to travel on summer so the water is clear. You cant see clearly the pawikans if the water is murky.
